Harry's first year at Hogwarts was the best year of his life. He would have stayed there if he could over the summer holidays. Anything was better than being at his Aunt and Uncle's house. To Harry's surprise though his Aunt and Uncle basically ignored him for the first few weeks that he was back and Dudley wouldn't go anywhere near him for fear that Harry would give him a snout to go with the pig tail Hagrid had given him a year earlier.
Harry had been given Dudley's second bedroom (Dudley had protested fiercely). Harry spent as much time as possible in his new room flipping through his spell books and flipping through the photo album of his parents that Hagrid had given him. Hedwig flapped and screeched loudly in her cage on Harry's desk. Vernon Dursley had locked her in there permanently so that Harry wouldn't let her out to draw attention to their house.
One particularly loud evening Uncle Vernon stormed into Harry's room. "Will you keep her quiet?!" he barked. "She's bored." Harry responded. "If I could just let her out for an hour or two she-" "Why? So you can send letters to your freaky little friends?" Vernon replied. "I don't think so."
"But I haven't even received a single letter from my friends this summer." Harry protested. Now that he thought about it, he was actually quite upset about that. Hermione and Ron both promised to write to him and Ron had even suggested having Harry come to stay with them for awhile.
That night at dinner Uncle Vernon reminded the family that he would be having business guests for dinner the next evening and that this deal could very well be the largest of his career. He went through Petunia's and Dudley's roles for the next evening and then turned to Harry. "And you?" he said. "I will be upstairs in my room, pretending that I don't even exist." Harry replied. "Too right you will." Vernon said.
The doorbell rang at 6:00 the next evening. Harry quickly made his way upstairs as Dudley opened the door for their guests. As Harry opened his bedroom door and stepped inside a strange sight awaited him. A scrawny elf stood in the middle of his bed. Harry quickly closed the door and the elf introduced himself as Dobby a House Elf. Dobby went on to explain why he was standing in Harry's bedroom. "Dobby came to warm Harry Potter."
"Warn me about what?"
"Harry Potter must not go back to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry this year! Terrible things are about to happen."
During their discussion Harry learned that Dobby had been intercepting his mail to try and make Harry think that his friends didn't care about him. Hopefully this would make Harry not want to return to school. But Harry explained why he had to go back to Hogwarts. Dobby, not liking that Harry would not refuse to go back to school, jumped off of Harry's bed and ran out the door and down the stairs to the kitchen. Harry chased after him as quietly as he could. When he reached the kitchen he saw Dobby levitating Aunt Petunia's desert pudding over the heads of Vernon Dursley's business guests. Dobby quietly whispered to Harry: "If Harry Potter will not say that he won't go back to Hogwarts, then Dobby must do it, for Harry Potter's own good." With a snap of his fingers the pudding came crashing down on the Dursley's guests.
Harry was scolded for hours that evening. Uncle Vernon took all of Harry's school things, packed them in his trunk, and locked them under the stairs. He installed several new locks on Harry's door from the outside and Harry was barely allowed to leave the room at all. It was the Dursley's intention to keep him locked in the room for the rest of his life. Harry wondered what would happen if he didn't show up and board the Hogwarts Express on September 1st. Would someone come looking for him to try and figure out why he hadn't shown up to school? Harry had no idea.
A couple nights later, Harry lay awake in his bed staring out the stars out his window. He was so lost in thought that he didn't notice that one of the stars was moving and growing larger and larger. It wasn't until it pulled right up to his window that Harry realized that the light was the headlights of a flying Ford Anglia flown by Ron, Fred, and George Weasley. They broke Harry out of his room, loaded his stuff in the car's trunk, and flew off to the Weasley's home (The Burrow).
As the four of them crept into the house Mrs. Weasley appeared around the corner fuming. "Beds empty! No note! Car gone--could have crashed--out of my mind with worry--did you care?--never, as long as I've lived--you wait until your father gets home, we never had trouble like this from Bill or Charlie or Percy--" She screamed at her sons before turning with a welcoming smile towards Harry.
Harry stayed with the Weasley's for the last couple weeks of summer. A few days before the term was to begin they all went to Diagon Alley to purchase their new school supplies. All of them had the same list of textbooks for Defense Against The Dark Arts this year. A complete set of books by Gilderoy Lockhart. Lockhart was well known for his ventures and his devilishly handsome good looks.
Harry and the Weasley's made their way to Flourish and Blotts in Diagon Alley to get their books. It just so happened that Gilderoy lockhart was there signing autographs. As soon as Lockhart saw Harry standing in line he grabbed him and pulled him up to the front. "Big smile Harry." He said. "Together you and I will make the front page." A photographer for the Daily Prophet took their picture and Lockhart gave Harry a complete set of his works for free.
After Molly Weasley got Lockhart's autograph they all headed out of Flourish and Blotts. "Bet you loved that, didn't you Potter?" a curt voice spat. Draco Malfoy walked over to them flanked by his father Lucius. Lucius Malfoy made snide remarks to Arthur Weasley and insulted the Weasley family for having bought second hand books for Ginny who was just starting at Hogwarts this year. Lucius Malfoy slammed Ginny's books back into her cauldron and the Malfoy's left.
On the morning of September 1st, Mr. Weasley loaded their trunks into the Ford Anglia to take them to King's Cross Station. They unloaded all of their trunks onto trolley's and made their way to Platform 9-3/4. One by one they all made their way through the brick barrier and onto the platform. Harry and Ron were the last two to go. Together they briskly jogged toward the barrier between platforms 9 and 10 and crashed into the wall. They had no idea why they couldn't get through the barrier. The clock behind them chimed for 11:00. It was too late. The Hogwarts Express had left.
An idea came to Ron. They could fly the car to Hogwarts! And they did. As they flew over the Hogwarts grounds Ron lost control of the car and it crashed into a giant tree. The tree came to life and started swinging and bashing the car and it threw them around. They just managed to get out of reach of the tree and the Ford Anglia's doors flew open and it ejected Harry and Ron out in protest. The car took off and drove into the Forbidden Forest.
Snape was waiting for them inside and took them immediately to his office to scold them. Professor McGonagall and Professor Dumbledore met them. Harry and Ron were afraid that they were going to get expelled. Instead they received detentions. What a way to start the new term..
