kingdom under fire looks pretty sweet I'll have to check it out or just jump to the sequel when it hits.

A little bit on SC2:

The good,
Definitely a fun game and well worth paying for, improvements from the first for and online play is good with a fairly easy and navigable setup screen.

The bad:
Not very strategic IMO. The only real strategy comes from counter units which aren't always very counterful (could be fixed before release, and yes I made that word up), and from building base and resource gathering as quick as possible to get defenses before someone speed rapes you at the beginning.

So fun with some strategy but, not enough for me to suggest it for a strategy game.

"Sir, we are surrounded!"
"Excellent! That means we can attack in any direction!"

Oh really? Yea I thought it was fun but as for strategy i feel it is lacking a little.

I like SC2, its a definite improvement from the first one. Strategies, once you learn a few and intermix them with great micro, are vital to success. ALL races have the ability to rush and to counter the rush, its just a matter of knowing how to handle each situation.

I definitely recommend it to anyone, especially those with prior RTS experience.

Obviously Savage 2 is the best RTS/FPS/RPG game out there, now if only more people played it.

I actually have kingdom under fire. Might have to play that again didn't know anyone actually played that lol.

I can't believe no one mentioned Civilization. My dad will call me up on skype and we have some epic Civ4 games. Adjust how quickly time passes to suit your attention span. I prefer epic or marathon, but there is quick and standard. Not exactly and RTS game.. but I mean.. Civ is one of the best games I've ever played.

Agreed on the Civ. Possibly one of the greatest Strategy games I've ever played.

Here are some RTS/Turn basedStrategy games I've played... there are a lot.

Age of empires: All of them
Age of mythology.
Civilization : All of them
Sins of a solar empire
Supreme commander: All of them
Warcraft I,II,III.
Starcraft
Hearts of Iron II,III
Empire Earth II
Superpower 2
Rome: Total war.
Halo wars (console only)
Age of shadows 3

There are more, I'm sure of it. i just cant remember them right now.

I think the most fun I've had was playing Rome: Total war. Single-player. Being able to take over Europe, North Africa, West Asia and some of the middle east.... just.. so satisfying.
For a larger scale with less depth, Hearts of Iron would be the one to play.

In terms of quick, fast paced games I would recommend Halo wars for the Xbox 360, and if this isn't available. Supreme commander 2.

If you like long term strategy games: Sins of a solar empire, Superpower 2, Civilisation are the games for you.

Civ 4 wasn't mentioned because it is a turn based strategy game, not real time strategy.

However. company of heroes is the greatest RTS game I have ever played. I have spent hundreds of hours in the game with my friends. Even today I can't believe it is as old as it is now. The great detail available in combat tactics is unrivaled, and there is a very real element of strategy in the ability to cut off vast swathes of resources, the need to capture/defend bridges/chokepoints/etc

Failing that, I'll fall back on the classics, like the aoe series.

I second that. Relic is probably, in my opinion, the greatest RTS - game developer. another great RTS is Dawn of War, which is also from Relic

I hear good things about DoW 2 and the expansions, the campaign is sort of a RPG-style thing that differs from the skirmishes, but the Multiplayer is supposed to be great.

For me, Supreme Commander 1/FA is my favourite. Nothing compares to the scale where each person can have up to 1000 units in multiplayer with up to 12 players in a single game, with it being a combination of land, air and navel forces including the massive experimentals that can be used (search google images for Galactic Colossus, first image with the GC on the right. Left unit is the ACU which when scaled to human size, average human height is about half of the foot), so big stuff.

Also enjoy Sins of a Solar Empire as they keep me entertained for hours in single games (these are long games) and the classic Age of Empires 2, with its 2D units and old graphics bringing back memories. World of Conflict was also a preferred game due to the idea of you being a sort of tactical commander, controlling a few units as part of a team that needs teamwork to win.

Supreme commander: FA is indeed awesome. And I have high hopes of its spiritual successor, Planetary Annihilation.

Eugene Systems made their mark with outstanding Wargame series.

StarCraft, where.even meta game cookie cutter builds need practice to perfect. Probably the most balanced RTS out there.
