Okay, the title maybe unclear, but I am looking for a game, which resembles a game which I played somewhere around Y2K.

 

You'd be the commander of a spaceship, and you were in charge of everything: colonizing planets and mining it, but also the military security. You could send fighters out to patrol (with the risk of them being out of fuel when an attack comes), train marines to board enemy vessels, et cetera et cetera.

It was a really cool game, but I have no clue what it was called.

Does this ring a bell with anyone? I am looking to play such a tihng again. Doesn't have to be the same, just as long as it is similar (I'd prefer more modern anyway).

Nah, I don't mean an MMORPG type, but the type they sell on CD-rom DVD

Sounds quite familiar, but I don't think I ever played it. I do recall some of my friends talking about something kinda like that back in the day.

Can you give some extra information about the game? Like if it was 2D or 3D, FPS perspective or top-down view, etc.

I know a couple games that fit some but not all criteria you've mentioned.

Around that time I know of Warpath, but it didn't have fighters nor marines.

You could check this list to see if any name rings a bell.


For recent games I recommend X3 and Distant Worlds.
X3 is a sandbox-like game where you drive your ship around trading/shooting stuff, gaining credits so you can buy better ships and expand your fleet or even set up factories. Start with a fighter and end with a vast corporation and commanding your fighter-filled carriers from the seat of your battleship.
Distant Worlds is more of a grand strategy game where you have to expand from your home planet, giving orders to colonize, research, build and design your ships.

It was a 3D-RT strategy game. But you'd always be looking from the bridge, or 3d camera in big fights. It was in no way affiliated with the big franchises (Star Wars/Star Trek).

 

It sure is not warpath, and I don't really get an Aha-feeling from the list, allthough I think it had command or captain in the title.

Can't really think of a bridge-locked view game that allows colonization. And the only RTS that I know where you have to control everything from one ship is Homeworld.

You can give one last try at the RTS list under the Sci-Fi section.

Homeworld does appear to come close to the concept I am looking for. It is more recent than the one I saw (as I saw it in '03 and it was a few years old at the time already).

 

We're getting closer
