I am sure this would be totally illegal on the OWF, but out here, I think things are safe. Talking about other games, that is.

Does anyone here also play Entropia Universe? I have been for the last 8 years, and despite it not being what I hoped for at first (I was lured in by the somewhat biased concept of getting paid to play, which obviously is not possible), it has become my absolute favorite game.

Especially the last few years, the game has been so enormously improved! Better newbie areas (giving us veterans new missions too), better mentoring systems, better cost-to-play (it was a bit more expensive in the past to kill a mob, so it was harder to get your returns so you could play), and in general: so absolutely gorgeous!

Due to the RCE aspect of the game, most players tend to be a bit more mature (RCE: you don't pay a monthly fee, instead, you buy the ingame currency and work with that just like you would with RL money) and social. And... not unimportant: the RCE makes the whole experience more real.

Just imagine; you've just been hunting on a planet, and are stupid enough to travel to another planet in a way too slow spaceship. And then a pirate (PK-er) shows up. How happy are you, when you manage to get back to the planet with only 1 hp left?

And now that they are introducing starter packs, a start is made even easier than it was before!

Check out this image, of an upcoming update:

defender-in-twinpeaks-final2.jpg

Just look at this!

And you can do so many things. Sure, you can just follow the quests, but it's all a sandbox game. You can hunt, mine, craft... you can be a highroller and immediately go for the high level mobs (leading to overspending. Which is a stupidity some people try to blame the company for) or you can play clever and get really far. I -being a poor bugger IRL- spend quite little. I think my budget is about $10 a month right now, which makes it a real challenge to get through the month.

I absolutely, one hundred percent, love this game. Because no game has ever gotten closer to a real experience than this one!

So, who plays this?

Or, who's gonna give it a try? If you do, let me know, I'll do my best to get you into the society I am in, which has some very knowledgeable players.

Looking forward to meet you ingame. This is me, by the way:

I promise to have my shirt on next time!

Some pics I made during an event a while ago:

adayatthebeach8_thumb.jpg

While they didn't attack me while flying, I figured I'd take a pod and drive past them...

bad idea:

Note, I saw the explosion coming, and bailed out. I lived for approximately 3 more seconds...

Looks interesting. Like a cross of Second Life and EVE?

@Robert2424: Good thing I am in Delta, else I thought you were ordering me to quit IRON :D

@Blaskowicz:

I joined this game after having played Second Life for a year or two. What struck me in SL is that people bought land, but there was no actual "scarcity" of land. Like normally, items have a value because demand and supply are a certain value. But in SL, supply was unlimited. The economic model in Entropia is more based on scarcity. There is actually a balancing team which keeps track of the economy and makes sure no great imbalances arise. That appeals greatly to me. If a gun is scarce, people pay more for it (I tend to play with the cheap stuff though).

I cannot say much about EVE, I never got beyond four days of trial. I found it somewhat boring to be honest. And what I saw from it, it was either flying around in a spaceship, OR being in a space station. Entropia has space and spaceships (and space combat), you can fly from planet to planet. You can attack eachother (and loot the stuff your victim is silly enough to bring along) or you can attack alien creatures. BUT... the most interesting part is the planets.

My favorite planet is Calypso, but there's also Arkadia (which has a similar feel), Rocktropia (which is basically a giant ego-project from a specific guy who thinks he's some sort of God, and who got rich from being the first ever to buy a virtual comet (he mortgaged his house for it, and actually sold it of with a good profit). It's got some themed sections, one part is a GTA clone (not well done), there is a zombie invested city, a Maximum Security Prison and more.

There is Next Island (but development there is slow), and recently an Arab/desert themed island opened up. What is interesting here is that the company behind Entropia is providing a platform, and anyone can become a planet partner, meaning they develop their own planet within the Entropia Universe.

I respectfully disagree ;)

This game has so many corners and activities to discover, it is sheer impossible to comprehend at first sight. Hell, I've been around for 7 years or something and still discover new stuff every now and then.

Do try it! But be warned though.... don't go running around blasting everything away like you would in HALO. The game works on Real-Cash-Economy, meaning you buy ingame currency, which you buy your ammo with. So you have to make good decisions about what you will be shooting at, in order to get good resources which you can sell again. PM me your ingame name, if you want to join the soc I am in.

Premise sounds decent and it looks entertaining. But from what I've read is that its an incredible time sink, unless you want to spend real life $. People say you get to a point after playing awhile where the upkeep on your weapons and ammo is just way too expensive.

EU has had some pretty bad press in the past, this is true. In the beginning of the EU (then called Project Entropia) it was marketed as a free-to-play way to get really rich. Obviously, this attracted a specific type of players. But since this IS a game, and it is run by an actual company...some money has to go from the playerbase to the company. (No shit, Einstein?)

Anyway, we've seen a good number of people who just rushed in, deposited $ 50 (or more) and bought expensive stuff they did not have the skills to use and they ended up broke in a short time. You know, this is a bit as a three year old who has had the sidewheels removed from his little bike and then figures it would be cool to drive to school in daddies Masserati. Yep, people get killed that way :D

Entropia Universe isn't about getting to lvl 100 in 4 weeks like some other games (actually, I sometimes have the feeling that over the years games tend to "dumb it down" a bit. Back in the days, you could have a game (without savepoints) where you'd die over and over at one point, untill you finally got past. This is less and less so.

Anyway, back to the topic at hand:

Entropia CAN be played without making a single deposit. But this takes time, indeed. You'd start out being a sweater, selling the sweatbottles you collect for some (small) money. With this money, you can get a hunt done. Or you can work your way to become a medic. The higher level hunters sometimes hire a noob to do the healing ("fapping" is the ingame name, after "First Aid Pack". I am sure the innuendo is totally not intentional). Most often, it's heal for decay, meaning they don't pay you a salary, but you don't have any cost either. And you gain some excellent skills that way. Plus, if they strike a good one, you might get a tip from them.

Or, you can indeed deposit some money. I always recommend that you spend the first week or so sweating and exploring. And determine how much you are willing to spend. I played for 6 months before I made my first $10 deposit, and it made all the difference. I had some skills already, and with the sweat I had already earned enough for the basic hunting gear. So that money went straight into hunting. You just determine how much you are willing to spend. Is it $50 a month? Cool. Is it $500 a month...eh..okay, if you want to. Is it $5 a month, that will work too. Just determine your budget, stick to it, and adjust your gamestyle accordingly.

Nowadays, I am unemployed, so I cannot currently afford to put money in. So I play the cheap game for now. I spend my time alternating between being a pilot on a Mothership (spaceship) where I get free skills which are quite useful in crafting (the long term goal I chose when I began long ago), and swunting, which is a combination of first sweating a mob, and when it is "dry" kill it. It keeps me occupied and still progressing (but slow). Added advantage, the mobs I hunt actually count towards a mission chain, so I am progressing on that as well :D

In the past, I have made some decisions that were not that smart at the time (I was drunk at a moment when they introduced a feature and made a huge purchase), but which is providing me with a steady income now. So I get my 100 PED a month budget which I began with as a noob from my ingame efforts now, which is great.

I am far from uber. I am far from hunting the really scary mobs. But I am doing quite well.

Entropia Universe is about becoming another you. It is the closest thing we will ever be able to experience to being a pioneer on another planet. I friggin love it.

So, I just finished another (free) skilling run. Took the Mothership out to space and get the aliens to attack me (while others are repairing, this way, we all gain skills).

Just driving around a bit:

But sometimes, running is the wise thing to do:

I actually saw another Mothership blow up in space... gonna be some people waking up in a Space Station not sure where they are going to board again.

Impossible to say. I have had times when I played loads, I've had times I didn't play at all. The amount of free time I have varies strongly based on work. I think I may even have been away entirely for 7 months due to work. So I may have been playing for 7 years, but it is not all "steady". I've actually had "disciples" (that is what it is called when you mentor a newbie, to teach him how to play) who passed me in skill level in a particular field within 6 months of playing. So I am actually still a noob in some fields :D

Actually, that is also one of the cool things. Unlike other -subscription based- games, out here, you can just leave and come back as you please. You don't pay have to pay when not playing, and when you come back, your character is still there with all his skills and items.

This week I've (so far) played 12 hours. Next week, I won't be able to login entirely...

And I am, like I said, far from uber (I don't actually care much about that anyway).

While in space, I had been collecting a few usefull skills, and one useless one (well, useless in the path which I have chosen anyway). Today, I found someone who needed that skill, and I chipped out part of the skill and sold it to him for 274 PED (that is the equivalent of $ 27,40). This is a nice little extra playmoney :)
