This video shows various security camera footage of the recent defection of a North Korean soldier. I was surprised to see the guy actually made it out alive. Especially with how close the North Korean soldiers were when they started shooting at him. It is also interesting to see immediately after firing at him, one North Korean soldier gives chase and accidentally steps several feet over the DMZ. That soldier pauses upon realizing what he had done, and then runs back over to the North Korean side.

 

The unamed defector was shot at 40 times, received 5 bullet wounds, but is expected to survive.

 

Some officers of the Joint Security Area (where the defection took pace) will likely face severe reprimandation for not stopping him before he could escape.

which is why NK would not last very long in a land war.  lets say they attack SK, and then the troops move in, and they see what the rest of the world is actually like and realize they have been lied to all their lives.  Does Rocket Man actually think they would continue to fight for him?

Thats not the problem, NK does not and never did stand a chance millitarily.

Until few years ago, they had enough artillery to wreck Seoul, the Capital of South. But IMO, combined firepower of US, SK and Japan would be more than enough to shock and awe the entire place and cut the CnC from Pyongyang to the border where you have the mass of artilleries pointing to Seoul. All US Presidents upto Bush had the option to take care of it IMO.

Now they probably have enough nukes to wreck SK and Japan.

These strategic decisions aren't controlled by foot soldiers and the guys firing the artillery shells or shooting nukes aren't the ones crossing the borders.

The question now is are SK, Japan and US willing to risk a nuclear missile slipping by and hitting Seoul or Tokyo?

The answer is a big resounding NO, the only reason Kim's govt surivives is becuase that govt has forged an effective detterence against external millitary action, else Kim would have gone down like Gaddafi or Saddam.

If his regime is near collapse and and if Kim feels it's due to machinations of his enemies (sanctions) he may as well say, "I'm going down anyway, so I'm gonna take you guys with me". So you just can't play silly game with a regime that has nukes. It's no more middle East or Africa or South America where everyone and their mums are busy playing game of thrones.

No, what you do is do some symbolic actions, slap on the wrist(token Chinese sanctions) talk tough (tweet like Trump) and do nothing but try and keep things rational and hope someone with direct access to dictator does the deed quickly and smoothly and obtains power very fast and hope that person is less of a lunatic than the guy he's replacing.

Good luck putting the genie back in this bottle. Trump's been dealt a bad card here.

NK conducted first nuke test during Bush's regime, that was the moment when options were lost and a credible detterence forged by NK, but as we all know, Bush was rather busy conjuring WMDs out of thin air in Baghdad instead of taking care of the real shit.

Well you got that all wrong buddy. We're not forcing anyone to stay... but we absolutely must keep most people out.

 

The Mexican government condones, and facilitates, illegal migration into the USA in order to rid themselves of the responsibility, and have our currency sent into Mexico. This weakens our currency, and chain migration is killing jobs, wages, and draining our entitlements... of which we have way too many to begin with. To me, this is an act of war, and I am firmly against this practice. If that's what you call a "nationalist"... sign me up. I'm a very proud nationalist.

 

The immigration laws in the USA are much different than the Socialist DPRK. I have never seen boatloads of immigrants landing on the beaches of North Korea as they search for a better life. Yeah that's right... the land of opportunity.

Glad the dude got medical attention according to that report. Granted it's CNN.
Also, didn't they fire rounds onto SK territory to hit this guy? I don't imagine that is going to generate any response, as previous incidents can show proof to that, but that does violate some sort of cease fire id assume.

Traditionally, to be chosen as a North Korean border guard, you usually must have a family or have plenty of surviving relatives. So if you choose to defect, the military makes it well known to you that your entire family (up to 3 generations) will be thrown in prison camps more or less indefinitely, due to your criminal act of defecting. The border guards are also some of the best fed in North Korea and tend to hold some prominence within the North Korean military. They are also some of the most heavily indoctrinated individuals within North Korea. So there are plenty of 'perks' to remain in the good graces of your superior officers, and the threat of what will happen to your loved ones seems to be what keeps border guards from defecting.

Firing over the DMZ is likely violating some term of the Armistice. Something of this nature actually happened several times over the decades. But the most violent incident during a defection would be in 1984 of Vasilii Yakovlevich Matuzok, a Soviet citizen on a tour of the DMZ on the North Korean side.

Seeing the vehicle he firstly comes with, it is possible he wasn't related to the border guards. he will offcourse be debriefed extensive.

 

It does show a very convicted person, it is THE worst place to try and leave North Korea from but also the one place with the biggest payday when succeeded. Most go thruw China but run the risk of getting deported on the spot.
