I got a hold of an AR 15 as a hobby. I am trying to decide how to modify it for kicks and giggles. Anyone here have one? What did you do with it? Does anyone has suggestions? I will be using mine mostly for range shooting so I wont need anything tactical just stuff for fun.

Muzzle brakes are nice, almost every rifle company makes one. I could recommend a company. Are you hoping for longer range, are short plinking

50/100 yards, nothing crazy. The rifle came with a muzzle break, I went with a mid tier model so it came with a good rail and muzzle. Right now I am considering replacing the stock with something more friendly.

What brand and model did you go with? And is it MilSpec or Commercial?

AR-15s have excellent modularity so you can add almost whatever features you desire.

Honestly, if all you are doing with it is range shooting at a stationary single target you don't really need anything else. At most a foregrip and sight of your preference.

Foregrips can make extended use more comfortable and improve control to some extent but remember that any attachments add weight increasing fatigue decreasing performance during extended shooting sessions. I would personally try to change out parts for lighter pieces but I'm a fan of trying to lighten my load wherever possible while trying not to sacrifice performance where it's needed.

That being said I'm in the military so I usually consider things from what I would want out of my service rifle so it is important to identify what role(s) you want this rifle to take and build it with that task(s) in mind. Alternatively, the only registered party is the lower receiver so you could build multiple uppers and just swap them out based on what you want to do that day.

I was thinking I didn't need anything but some people are passionate about moding theirs and suggested I would do the same. Right now it has a rail system and I was thinking just a small scope and I have a red dot to switch in and out depending on the range, though it has been suggested to me to get a magnifier instead of the scope since I wont be shooting out past 100 yards in the foreseeable future. The main thing is I just want to treat it with respect and have it be comfortable for me to shoot.

I went with a ruger, I believe it is commercial model.

I just bought a magnifier so I think that should be fine for my range. What is the distance you usually shoot at with yours Lorikz?

A red dot sight or EOTech(if you don't mind the price tag) would be a nice addition. As Lorikz Kain mentioned, adding a foregrip, such as a vertical or angled is a nice improvement that offers slightly increased stability while shooting. Other than that I wouldn't worry about adding more accessories, especially if you plan on shooting within 100 yards. AR owners have a tendency to put too much 'tacticool' crap on their firearms. Expensive features that are rarely(if ever) used and significantly weigh down your firearm.

I've never fired a Ruger AR but I have read and heard good things about them. I take it you probably have the AR-556 model?

Yes its the 556 model. My Red dot is holosun hs515cu, the guy at the gun shop upsold me on it, actually he upsold me on everything. I went in the store looking for a 9mm carbine and came out with an AR haha

I would say the majority of my shooting with ARs stay within the 50-100 meters range but I'll engage out to 300 meters if I'm somewhere that can facilitate those distances.

I don't just shoot ARs though so really it just depends where and with what I'm shooting.

I meant the distance you shoot at with the magnifier and how well it worked.

Also thanks for helping me not play the pimp your AR game guys.
