49 people dead... this is a tragic attack.  Radicalism and psychopaths can be found anywhere.  This guy was an absolute nut, as evident with his manifesto.

Everyone over here is in shock. (Yes, I'm a New Zealander.) A mass shooting has never occurred in NZ in my lifetime; it's a peaceful little backwater most of the time. We've never had a terrorist attack to my knowledge. One of the shooters is an Australian citizen not ordinarily resident in NZ who explicitly stated in his manifesto that he came over here because our race relations are generally so good, so that he could stir up division between white people and Muslims.

I agree with CC on this, but much of this is very confusing. KitKat says "one of the shooters is an Australian citizen"... I have heard they have three people in custody, but my understanding is there was only one shooter. According to his manifesto, the guy is a Communist, which really doesn't line up with "right wing". Obviously he's a Nationalist, which makes me wonder why he didn't choose Australia, unless he was acting on behalf of his conspirators. Like I said, much about it is confusing, but confusing everyone could be his plan.

 

I'm a strong Nationalist myself, and I have no problem with anyone having great concern about mass uncontrolled immigration into their country. We are having the same problem here in the USA, and ignoring the problem is not the way to deal with it. Unfortunately, because we have gutless politicians doing nothing about our immigration system that is completely overwhelmed, I fear we will see many more of these events... here in the USA, in Europe, and everywhere inflicted with unchecked invasion.

I don't think this a right wing left wing thing. It's pure evil and shouldn't be considered anything else. Blaming one side does nothing, because anyone who is right or left won't listen to a word you say right after you accuse their side for being apart of it. I don't care for the slaughter of innocent people, and telling me that some of my beliefs are apart of it takes away from what happened. It was evil in this animal "heart" these type of attacks aren't carried out by people but people who have no grasp on society on morals, virtue, or what a true man is.

There are conflicting media reports about it. Some newspaper articles said there were multiple shooters; others said it was just the one guy and the two others were just accomplices. There was a fourth person arrested initially but he has been released as he was using a weapon in self-defence.

Well, we know for a fact that there were shootings at 2 locations simultaneously, so he must have had some accomplices, but the police may or may not have them in custody.

I believe a big part of the problem is that political discourse in general has moved very far away from discussing and debating policy towards rallying people behind various identities. If we do not move forward from these hyperpartisan identity politics practiced by both the right AND left, we will continue to see the escalation of violence and social unrest. Terror attacks like this are a thing of their own of course, but not totally independent of the general public sentiment.

The guy who carried this out clearly knew how to not only maximize casualties, but also to get the Media to focus so much on his hatred and bigotry. He knew the media wouldn't show off every single page of his manifesto (even if they did the average viewer wouldn't take time to read it), so he plasters it all on his firearms and uploads a GoPro live video of his shootings. The Media took the bait, ate it all up, and now the guy got his message plastered all over the worldwide news.

 

Unlike the majority of nutjobs who partake in mass killings, this was quite a sophisticated undertaking by a guy who clearly understands EXACTLY how to portray his actions which to gain the most attention, which subsequently generate discussion and unfortunately future 'inspiration' for other mass killers.

 

I will say this, thankfully at the second mosque one of those people he hates so much was able to bring a firearm to bear against him and stop his attack.

Not actually true. One of the worshippers at the second mosque took on the gunman with nothing more than an Eftpos machine.

Yeah, first reports said the guy had a firearm, but in fact he threw a credit card reader at the terrorist, and then picked up one of the emptied guns and threw that too, and broke a window. Apparently the guy thought he was being fired upon and fled.

I would say he came over from Australia to New Zealand to commit this terrorist attack because of the shamefully loose gun control laws in new Zealand. Also the new Zealand police were completely unprepared to respond to this kind of event...it took them 20 minutes to respond from the first call that went in.

Meanwhile a turkish guy who reportedly fought in Chechnya and had ties to ISIS shot up a tram in Utrecht, 4 dead. I’ll eat my hat if this isn’t a “response” for the NZ shooting. The cycle of violence continues.

Honor killing is the stupidest shit. "Hey I am a loser who has a perceived slight against me so I better kill some person."

Honour killings are usual familial related, offcourse founded in a perceived slight against ones (family's) honour.

 

That said, more info coming out and it seems that motivation has been put on the backburner, very likely the attacker had no ties to the people attacked/dead.
