I'm overjoyed that this miserable excuse for a human being is dead. That said, the timing and circumstances here are very interesting:

  1. He was hiding out near the Turkish border
  2. He's been under surveillance for a few weeks, supposedly the US waiting for the right time to strike

Seems correlated to the Turkish offensive on the Kurds. I wonder whether Erdogan knew where al-Baghdadi was all along, and named the intel as his price in exchange for US troop withdrawal from Kurdish territories...

I've read a few articles but the US Government is claiming the raid planning began 2 weeks ago when they gained intelligence on his likely whereabouts. Although that doesn't really answer when the US actually learned where he was hiding. So it is plausible Turkey and the US had some type of Gentleman's Agreement.

But if it played out that way, why wouldn't Turkey admit everything, once Trump threatened to wreck the Turkish economy with Sanctions? Erdogan has every right to be upset at the US, after the US practically gave them a green light to occupy Kurdish territory. Turkey folds once Trump changed his mind largely due to internal pressure. So why would Erdogan keep silent if this is true?

It would then be more likely that the Kurds divulged their intel (how complete it may have been is a mystery) in the hopes of still having the US on their side. Thou the actual intricities will be obscured by the ages no doubt.

Wonder what transformation ISIS will undergo following this, perhaps even the best outcome for the West would be infighting.

Proof positive that there is more going on than we know, and short targeted operations are more effective than large military occupations. I am firmly in favor of bringing our troops home. Going after bin Laden was justified and I supported the endeavor completely... but staying over there is just insane, and after all this time, I can't see how taking down Saddam Hussein was a smart idea.

We can essentially kill anyone, or destroy anything, on the planet, from an underground facility in Alabama, by a dozen specialists manning a bank of computers, directed by the Pentagon in Washington DC. We can protect the USA without forced occupation all over the world. Along with that... it's time to kick the United Nations out of New York City.

.......for the 12th or so time. Wait till he pops up dead again!!! However even if its for real this time, the threat of ISIS still looms large. Terrorist organisations are like Hydra. You cut off one head and another takes its place.

About what? Forced occupation? or the ability to destroy anything from Alabama? or the U.N.?

That USA can destroy/kill anything on a planet. No offense or disrespect to the boys in uniform but you couldn't even beat any of those countries with all the advantages you had, tech weapons, intel, allies, etc.

The US military is the undisputed king of conventional warfare. Yet after all these decades we haven't quite figured out to win unconventional warfare. It's like treading water, as long as we stick around things are somewhere between mediocre-good. But as soon as drawbacks happen or the military hands over control to the regional government all hell seems to break loose.

Oh no doubt about it. But that ended in WW2.

We can. It would take about 10 minutes from the time they pin pointed your location to greet you will a Hellfire... and that's a moving target. But we're Americans, and we have this thing about overkill, appropriate response, and not targeting world leaders. That will soon end when too many world leaders are unable to lead the world.

You mean conventional warfare no longer exists? I believe it still does but it is growing increasingly rare as modern conflicts are mostly 4th Generation Warfare.

Speaking of. Countering guerilla warfare is important, but not nearly as important as developing the cyber-warfare capabilities. A long read, but worth it:

And ISIS acknowledged the raid and its leaders death. Not really unexpected as they "run their business" quite differently from how AQ did it for example.

More like no actual nation vs nation has happended for awhile, kinda needed to be a conventional war. Which I find to be a good thing tbh, mostly.

Well that didn't sound threathening at all...

Sad that it only sounds threathening to your allies...
