August 16, 200917 yr comment_116001 I personally had an amazing experience in Boy Scouts. However, that had a lot to do with my troop and the council. As our council slowly brought their policies more and more in line with National's I was less impressed. Report
August 16, 200917 yr comment_116440 Heh. Boy scouts. You need money for that. And possibly a family. haha While you were earning merit badges, I was learning the metric system, so to speak. Report
August 16, 200917 yr comment_116637 My "other half" was in scouts for a couple years, mainly because he felt pressured by his father to join. The older kids were alright, but the younger kids were pretty troublesome (not to say they didn't know their stuff though, well some of them at least). He didn't really have much in common with the other boys there, and wanted to quit for a while seeing how he wasn't much of an outdoors person (or a people person in general). Sometime while he was in first class rank, there was a meeting the one night. The scoutmaster's son (who was one of the troublesome kids) was giving him trouble (has been for a while). Well, out of nowhere while they were playing a game, he bit him in the stomach for no apparent reason. He quit either after that week, or sometime that month at least. Report
August 17, 200917 yr Author comment_116766 wow I guess the experience you have depends on the troop. I'm a star scout soon to be a life scout and I want eagle by 15, if anyone is active and going to national jamboree tell me and we can meet up just don't be a nerd Dom Zak I know your face Report
August 17, 200917 yr comment_117075 Yeah, my experience is that it varies a lot from group to group. That was one of my biggest surprises when I worked as a counselor and saw all kinds of different troops come through. I think it's all about finding the right fit. The program has the potential to offer a lot for kids, but you have to find a group that's offering what you're looking for. Report
August 19, 200917 yr comment_118172 I am an Eagle Scout. I had a great time in scouting! Same here, it's also where I got my love of the outdoors from. Most of my scouting was in a homeschool troop back in ohio, then when the scoutmaster wouldn't give me the life scout rank because I wore my hat backwards to 1 meeting (which I took off when he asked me to wear it correctly or take it off) I changed to a different troop (same state though). After a year or 2 I moved out to colorado and joined a troop there (I also wound up joining the OA), and finnishing eagle at the last second. After that I did some minimal helping in the troops my little bro joined, but he wound up quiting scouts and is now in CAP. Report

September 10, 200917 yr comment_136218 I loved Philmont. emperor, check to see if your district or council ever sets up high adventure trips. My troop didn't do a ton of high adventure until later on, so I did a lot of my high adventure trips though my council. On top of the great trip, you get to meet a bunch of great guys you'd never meet if you just do stuff within your troop. I'm still in touch with about half of the guys I went to Philmont with. Report
September 10, 200917 yr comment_136969 Eagle in '92 and Philmont Ranger in '97 (one of the best summers of my life) Get that Eagle. Everyone recognizes it and if they do find out you're an Eagle, will afford you more social respect for being one.I remember how I was on the fence with my girlfriend's father when we first met. He hadn't formed an opinion of me yet and was holding his cards close to his vest. When someone mentioned I was an Eagle, his eyebrows raised a little, his expression changed, and conversation from that point on was less tense. I've noticed similar reactions through my life. Report
September 11, 200917 yr Author comment_137517 thanks for the advice man I want to go soon my troop doesn't do much high adventure stuff to many kids but we still go white water rafting and possibly going on rafts on the Mississippi for a day or two like one of our scoutmasters did when he was a scout. September 11, 200917 yr comment_138177 Philmont Ranger would be awesome. I worked at our week long summer camp for a few years. It was a pretty big commitment at that age, but it might be one of the best experiences of my life. thanks for the advice man I want to go soon my troop doesn't do much high adventure stuff to many kids but we still go white water rafting and possibly going on rafts on the Mississippi for a day or two like one of our scoutmasters did when he was a scout. We used to have the oldest group of kids go on a high adventure trip every year (Boundary Waters as it's only a 4ish hour drive) and the younger kids would go do a different camping trip at the same time. It let the older guys get that experience and at the same time, the middle kids get an early crack at being the oldest kids in the group for a bit. Report
September 11, 200917 yr comment_138217 Yeah, before Philmont I worked a few years at the camp in our Council. I was an area director (1/3 of the camp) for a couple years. Good fun, but not nearly the experience of Philmont. Working at Philmont is pretty much for college aged people and older. Its a good time for college students looking for a summer job. Ah yes, Boundary Waters. My college roommate handled one of the fly-in bases at Boundary Waters. He brought back some good stories. If you can't make it to Philmont.... from what I understand, Boundary Waters offers a similar caliber of experience... both in team building, comraderie, and personal growth. Report
