I bet if California was independent for a bit longer than a couple of months though (along with Texas, Utah/Deseret, and NM) that it could handle any of those states. Nothing like a gold rush to fill your warchest. We'd probably only have interest in owning the Mormons though, since they killed quite a few settlers migrating to California Report
