I never asked any gay friend I had about how the role is chose, or why they chose to be the "pitcher or catcher," but is something I've always pondered. I think addressing it as "pitching or catching" could certainly come off incentive, I imagine using those terms is a little less blunt on what you're trying to ask.
Like i said, I was always curious about who plays what role and why they do, and I'd personally have no problem asking a friend of mine just that. And, I do talk with a lot of my friends about their sexual nature, but I wouldn't ask to a random person, heterosexual or homosexual. It all really depends on who it is, how close i am to them, etc. Hell my one friend is like a open book when we hang out...he tells me a lot more then I sometimes care to know.
