Music Challenge of the Fortnight - Fortnight 1

Featured Replies

Apart from this being fun, for me at least :P Since I'd love to see your posts and the music that you associate with the different subjects that will be suggested. But I hope you'll have some fun as well and if you "infect" another member with your songs even better :D

The plan is that every forghtnight I will announce a new topic. Each individual will then attempt to find the video/song out there that most exemplifies the characteristics of that subject. Voting will be opened after the fortnight to see which one the membership feels wins the category for the fortnight. There will be no limitation on language, subject, or content. However, if you feel that your video has any of those please make sure you note it for our younger members.

This fortnights subject is:

Emotional

Every one has a song that when they first heard it, it just grabbed them and made them think, something that either brought up some memories of your own or caused you to admire the depth of his/her emotions.

This song has so much meaning for me. It reminds me of how my life use to be and always brings tears to my eyes. I hope everyone is able to connect with it like I am since this is probably the best song I've ever heard.

This is beautiful. Thanks man.

My wife and I on are 20th wedding anniversary, we remarried with this being one of the songs we picked for our ceremony. One of my favorites.

So Many Memories

I would say that 'Home Is Where Your Heart Is' by The Sounds is probably one of the most emotional songs that I've ever listened to. The first time that I listened to it, I knew that this song would eventually make me cry, and it did several months ago.

I would post a link to youtube... but the Great Firewall of China blocks access to it, and I do not have enough time to use a proxy.

EDIT: Added the video, let me know if it's not okay -Theo

Hey I know that album! But I never listened to that song in that way before. It is quite lovely actually, I thought of it as "just a pop song" before but this time I found it touching.

This topic already gets my seal of approval. :)

I tossed a few songs around but the one I landed on is In The Aeroplane Over The Sea by Neutral Milk Hotel. It's the title song from NMH's best known album, and their last to date, as they went on a decade-plus hiatus shortly after it was released. They seem to be coming back in some way though, I think they played dates this year and more scheduled in 2012.

The album as a whole, I can't recommend enough. You might wonder why I would go with this singer who apparently can't hold a tune, he's constantly singing beyond the limits of his ability and only just within the borders of his soul. When he sings about youth, love, mortality, sadness, war, you just go with him. The songs are really direct and completed beautifully with singing saws, eastern european folky bits, radio hiss, organs, instruments I can't name.

I get awfully melancholy listening to the album, it really takes me back to being in my late teens, hearing stuff like this for the first time, all sorts of personal stuff  , staying up late inadvisably to the early hours and waking to a too-light morning with a knot in my empty stomach which won't settle for hours until it is replaced by a pain in the top of my head. This song does that more than most, the lyrics were so simple and beautiful and there weren't so many instrumental flourishes so I'd sing it to myself as I walked to lectures or work.

"And how I remember you / How I would push my fingers through your mouth / To make to make those muscles move / And make your voice so smooth and sweet" creepy lyrics I particularly love.

(After NMH, their drummer Jeremy Barnes traveled to Europe and for a while worked as a postman in Leicester, before going on to form A Hawk And A Hacksaw, who are this stupendous folk band again using eastern european styles and so many different instruments... they're one of the best live bands I've ever seen)

You could throw just about anything by Cohen in that category for me mind. Man really is something else.

edit: Ew, forgot how badly Youtube butchers the sound quality. Have grooveshark link

Edit Edit: Technically that's not a Cohen song since the lyrics are an English translation of a Spanish poem from the 20's. Have Alexandra Leaving as well:

Edit Edit Edit: This should probably be in moles btw.
