This is more common than you think. I remember turning up to pick up a cruiser in Ireland once that had its wheelhouse removed after the previous hire had run into a bridge support, and then been carried round in the current under the side bridge arch (that was lower than the main) and had the roof cut off.
For more boat fails, this is a nice compilation of 49er videos.
The 49er is a boat that has about 30% more sail than is sensible on that hull. Hilarity ensues.
