Allright, so I get that touch screens work well with portable devices that you can get out of your pocket/bag on the street but WHAT THE HELL is up with touchscreen desktops? Imagine working on one of these 8 hours a day, or having to write a long essay/paper by tapping your fingers against non-flexible glass. Not to mention you're continuously smudging grease over your screen.

 

I do get that touchscreens are very "in" right now, but seriously? IMO a touchscreen is clearly an inferior interface to the good old mouse/keyboard when used with a desktop.

Really depends on what you do on your computer. For example designers and artist that use a separate pad to draw with, now can directly control their movements on their computer without buying an extra pad. People that need direct and precise in such situations benefit mostly, but everybody is better of having a mouse and a keyboard. 

 

At work (i work at a restaurant) we use touch controlled desktops and it can be some what annoying because not every movement is captured if pressed too softly etc. But because we need to fill in information fast and sporadicly we benefit from the touchscreen. This would be different I was a blogger or something in that direction and need to create a paper of 10 pages.

I agree that when you're working in a specialized field (like the ones you mentioned), a touchscreen may be better. But for the mainstream desk worker, a touchscreen is pretty much a burden.

I personally don't think that this is a undifferentiated change for the whole world. It's just a technological leap forward for those who actually need it. I don't think desktops will start selling like crazy due to introduction of the touchscreen desktop. Those who benefit the touchscreen will benefit, those who don't need it won't notice a thing. I don't think it will be the new standard or something like that if you mean that. It's a highly specialized good.

It seems that some developers like MS thought otherwise, the Win 8 was designed specifically with touchscreen monitors in mind. Though they seem to be backtracking due to highly negative response from the PC market.

It really does depend on what you do, however I think most of the time it is an inefficient way to do stuff.

It is advertised too highly for the niches it might fit, even in computer stores it is overly presented.

 

The only way I want to do computing instead of what it is like now, is with my mind.

Pros and cons, its a consumer driven market so if people want it they will keep them around, if not then we won't see so many in the future.

I gotta say, while I generally never use the touch screen features to the tuoch screen desktops I've used I like how they are working towards adding support for multiple types of input. One of the best things they are doing with computers is expanding input support for multiple types of input. (xbox one for example)

I could see this technology being helpful for people who work with 3D Modeling and CAD software. In fact, any work involving creativity or artistic talent would benefit from a touchscreen. Although beyond those specific spheres I don't see much of a use for it. As for now I don't plan on buying one, but I might after a few years when prices decline. As with everything the technology will get better over time and touchscreens will become more sensitive/accurate.

I guess they're kinda cool but I don't see touchscreen being practical to use unless it's games or drawing.
