I've played it for a while, but it tended to become too much like RL: work, eat, sleep, piss your pants and clean the place up.

1) it has been communicated clearly to me from "higher up the hierarchy" that this individual is indeed an official for IRON.

I used to play it years ago. Stopped playing when I realized I had been doing almost the same thing in Sims 2, but with less content than what I had in the Sims 2 (Addons weren't out yet).
EA also turned me off to the series because its become one big money pit. Release new sims game, make bazillion addonds and expansion packs and overcharge on them. Remake same game with better graphics and charge more money, but with way less content, make players rebuy that content in a bazillion more addons and expansion packs. Then repeat.
Mods are basically the way to go if you want to get enjoyment out of the series without breaking the bank.

I think the SIMS 3 is quite different from 2. But I agree on the add-on cash cow sense.

I bought it for the console, realized afterwards I don't have the time for that crap.
I have a backlog of too many games and wouldn't waste my time on that.

Sims 3 offered a more open world that happened in real time (Sims 2 was actually supposed to have that). And they were some other minor changes besides updated graphics. It did suffer from some bad performance issues though and was buggy. And a couple features were removed which had been Sims 2. In the end it just didn't seem like a worthwhile improvement.
Sims 4 looks like it has something good to bring to the table. More in depth characters and emotions. Environment will have more of an affect on your Sims actions.

Sounds like it is becoming too much like RL... even more so.

Spring break means Sims 3 binge for me.
Have the strength to accept that which you cannot change,
Have the courage to change that which you can,
The gratitude to be grateful for what you've been given,
The faith that if it is meant to be, you'll see it again
And the fortitude to walk forward with the lessons learned if not.
