Wikipedia Golf

Featured Replies

This is one of my favorite forum games.  Here's how it works: the person above you posts a link to a Wikipedia article.  You go to Wikipedia and click the "random article" button in the toolbar.  You need to click links from that random article to navigate your way to the Wikipedia article that the previous golfer posted: the fewer links the better! It's fun and a bit educational, too.

Here's an example.  Suppose I'm trying to get to the article http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chinese_art.  I could take the following path:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hewlett_Harbor,_New_York (random start: city on long island)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Long_Island (island near New York City)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_York_metropolitan_area
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boston (city in northeastern USA)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Museum_of_Fine_Arts,_Boston (art museum in Boston)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chinese_art (destination)

5 links to my destination! Not bad. Believe it or not, you can make most connections in 5 or fewer links if you try hard. (You can call 5 links "par".) If you're too busy to optimize your path, getting it in 10 is usually pretty easy.

Other various rules:

  • All English encyclopedia articles (those hosted on "en.wikipedia.org") are game.
  • Pages that have a namespace (like "User:" or "Wikipedia:") are not encyclopedia articles and therefore may not be used.
  • Have fun!

Let's start! First destination: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brazil_national_football_team

Start: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xiaodong_Wang (Chinese-born American biochemist)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1170s_in_architecture

End: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ikorta_church (an ancient church in the country Georgia)

Ikorta Church is really deep. I couldn't find any good way to get there without going through either the "timeline/lists route" or the "geography route". :)

Let's try this one… http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Walleye_epidermal_hyperplasia_virus

Start: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ch%C3%A2teau_de_Leynes (castle in france)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Departments_of_France

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Netherlands

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prostitution

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HIV

End: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Walleye_epidermal_hyperplasia_virus

Always look at your target page, you can find good clues in finding a close link. I wanted to go thruw the recent Ukraine plane crash (it has lots of HIV doctors on it) but as I didn't found it immedealty, I went with my back-up :D

Start: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eremiaphila_bifasciata (a species of praying mantis)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Praying_mantis

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ancient_Greece (the word "mantis" comes from ancient Greek)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ukraine

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hero_City (a Soviet honorary title awarded for outstanding heroism during World War II)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Defense_of_Brest_Fortress (battle in World War II)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fortress_of_War (a film about the Defense of Brest Fortress)

End: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pavel_Derevyanko (Russian actor starring in Fortress of War)

Pavel Derevyanko only has five inbound links. :P I also had an opportunity to go through Crimea, but it would have added another two links and I was already at seven.

New: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stigmatogaster_subterranea

This has only one inbound link. :D

How do you know the amount of inbound links?

You can click "What Links Here" in the sidebar for any article to see all inbound links. It's also useful for working backwards when golfing to a hard-to-reach destination. :)

Start: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eliza_Manningham-Buller,_Baroness_Manningham-Buller (head spy in Great Britain in the mid 2000s)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BBC_world_service

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_Brunswick

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nova_Scotia

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_Waterford_Girl (a 1999 drama-comedy film set in Nova Scotia)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_Waterford,_Nova_Scotia

End: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Breton_Education_Centre

Breton Education Centre has three inbound links: "List of schools in Nova Scotia", "New Waterford, Nova Scotia", and "Coal Bowl (basketball tournament)". That didn't give me too much to work with, so I just went with geography. :P

New: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Second_Congress_of_Rastatt (plenty of inbound links on this one, mostly history-related)

Begin: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jonathan_Chaffey (chaplin in royal airforce of UK)

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/War_in_Afghanistan_%282001%E2%80%93present%29

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Missouri_River

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/St._Louis,_Missouri

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pruitt-Igoe

End: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Pruitt-Igoe_Myth

Not to hard, might have even gotten faster into St. Louis if I skimmed the Afghanistan page for military bases in the US me thinks, no?

New: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ornithoctona (HA, biology again, 2 inbound links, have fun!)

owwwww, seems nice. Don't use it thou, not challanging enough :D

I do tend to go for the various link-bar's on the bottom of each page, they make skipping a couple links easier.
