Does anyone have any idea what this means?

Recgaurd.exe - Application Error

The instruction at "0x0041ab32" referenced memory at 0x00000004". The memory could not be "read".
Click on OK to terminate program

Keeps popping up on a PC someone gave me.
I have a feeling someone deleted a bunch of important shit, as it acts weird and keeps telling me that the downloader is not installed, which then prompts me to download a downloader. Which apparently can't happen because there's no downloader.... :/

I know of only two things that would cause something like that.

1. Something got corrupted.

2. Virus or Trojan.

Ether or. its only small. I'd just run some scans and most likely if you run the right scans you can figure out what it is.

Yeah, I'm sure it's either a virus or someone deleted things that shouldn't have been deleted. Apperently someone put.porn on it from a different device. Makes me wonder who's had their hands all over this. :V
But if I can't fix It.myself, it's garbage to me. I'll just throw it away.

Up to date anti virus software should take care of it. I ended up getting a few virus on my laptop. Got some macafee, and took care of it. (It took the thing 3 weeks to fix one Virus, but its running well now). Virus and trojans happen to a lot of people. happen to everybody. Just be glad it probably a bunch of virus's. Trojans are a pain to get rid of. But if you can identify it said trogan, you can get rid of it allot easier.

And your sister seems like a nice girl.

I used to work at a computer repair shop and we would use a few different antispyware/malware/virus programs that are free and get the job done pretty well.  What operating system is the computer? what is the make and model? When you go to my computer, what drives do you see? (ex. C: Local Drive, D: DVD drive,... etc.) Do any of them say recovery?

Start of EDIT:

The free programs that I use for removal....

NOTE-----download the following programs, but do not run them yet.

1.CCleaner (removes all "junk/not neeeded" files from computer)

2.Spywareblaster

The Following link will install the three programs below (will default to free versions) If you would like to download full trial versions manually download/install programs individually

https://ninite.com/avg-malwarebytes-spybot2/

3.Malwarebytes (Could use their 30 day free trial)

4.Spybot Search and Destroy

5.AVG Free (Could use their 30 day free trial)

Once you have downloaded all of them. you can run ccleaner, after that you could go to spywareblaster update it, and enable all protection.

After running those two programs restart the computer.  once the computer shuts off and begins to turn on start pressing F8 every half second until a black and white screen appears with safe mode options.  highlight safe mode with networking and press enter.  This would load a very basic version of windows which will increase your chances of discovering malicious threats.

If using windows XP, select the administrator account. if windows vista, windows 7, or windows 8 select your normal account.

-----note---- (if vista, 7, or 8 before opening programs below be sure to right click the icon and run as administrator) If XP simply open them

Now open malwarebytes and make sure to update it, if it hasnt done it, itself already. run the scan and remove any objects found.

After that is done, open spybot search and destroy. Again update it, run the scan, and remove any objects found.

Once those two programs are done restart your computer.  After it has restarted open AVG as administrator like above if vista, 7, or 8.  update the program, and run the scan.

Hope this helps

End of EDIT:

recguard.exe is a process from HP that prevents a user from deleting or corrupting the WinXP Recovery Partition on Hewlett Packard computers.

Probably not caused by a virus, probably just a corruption in the exe. Most thing that people think are caused by viruses aren't. Most viruses just sit there and steal data.

In addition to what King Kong mentioned above, Sophos Anti Root Kit and Avast are great programs to have. No need to ever spend $ in fixing a computer, you can find everything for free online. Now if you can't get it to boot (and no nothing about hardware replacement), thats when you have to consult an expert.

I'm just glad to hear you have something in the works to move you from working with a phone.

Lots of help here from the minds of IRON... good luck getting it worked out.

A system restore isn't bad, deletes everything and starts anew. So some files that are no longer needed are for sure gone, and makes sure all basics are fully restored.

System restore is terrible and shouldn't exist.

They SHOULD have stripped your windows serial key from your registry and done a wipe, reinstalling windows. There are many working bracked copies of windows 7 around if you look for them.

Yeah, system restore pretty much sucks. There was nothing on the computer I wanted so its best to wipe it out and install a new OS.
