Since Robert covered the military basics, I'll go onto the economic side. This is all just a basic guide, but I'll get some better written up at some point.
Growing and expanding are the two most important parts of Nationsgame. The more food you have in stock, the higher your population rate increases. Construct extra farms, power plants, and when required use the Lumberjack, Irrigator, Pickaxe, or Jungler item (can be bought for 50 Money) to clear more space. Also buy a Sawmill at some point to produce Building Materiels. Use the Geologists and Herbalists to discover plants and metal deposits. Then build factories to produce consumer goods and an Iron smelter. I personally use Ciderworks to produce consumer goods as the input is only 2 Money and 4 Power. But Ciderworks requires 5 Apple Trees usage to build.
Activity also plays a large role in growing quickly. The more often you log on per day, the more you can collect, even if your factories are not at full capacity. The more resources you collect and money you gain the faster you can build more factories.
The idea of war is not to die for your country, it's to make the enemy die for his.
