Maybe I'm just a real odd ball, but sometimes when watching Anime I like some of the side characters better then I like the main characters most of the time. I would post a list of examples but I'm not home and I'm sure to butcher the names in spelling but wanted to get the ball rolling.

Am I'm just an oddball or is there side or is there side characters that people like from those who watch anime.

Me too. Most of the times, the motivations of main characters are laid bare for us to judge, but that's not the case for side characters. Their motivations might stay hidden in the course of the whole anime, coming out only at the last. They can be enigmatic, cute, sypathetic etal without us knowing the real motivations behind their actions, or their motivations just might be really complicated, enough for us and the main protagonist to misunderstand them. 

 

In this vein, I love the side character of Code Geass, Suzaku Kururugi. Unlike most people I don't think he was bad/ hypocritical as a person. Most of his actions throughout the series align themselves perfectly with his end goal, and he is the one who sacrifices the most in that world, all for a selfless cause. In fact, I hated Lelouch more, much more. But that might just be me hating evil protags. People say he did the right thing, and tha he was the greatest guy eva at the end, but I think his actions earlier in the series weren't really leading upto that conclusion. Even though not directly so, I found his actions to be selfish, contrasting with Suzaku's selfless and generally selfsacrifical nature.

 

There are many others. I liked Kakashi and Itachi of Naruto, even Kisame to some extent. Near from Death note was a pretty cool guy, as was mello, but they got overshadowed by L. Then there was Maes Hughes. His funeral was probably the saddest scene in any anime for me.

I'll have to keep an eye out when I get around to watching those animes. I just got done watching the irregular at magic high. (Witch wasn't bad). I mainly like Enrica (I believe thats what her name is.
