Cambridge Analytica

So, Channel 4 did an investigative piece on Cambridge Analytica and their involvement in various political campaigns:

Pt. 1: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mpbeOCKZFfQ

Pt. 2: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cy-9iciNF1A

plus a bonus one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zb6-xz-geH4

Take of it what you will. To me, this is another strong argument in favor of elitism versus the easily manipulated popular vote. If the so-called democratic process essentially comes down to “which candidate has the better algorithm” then there really isn’t much point to keep up the charade. I know for a fact tht one thing will NOT happen: that is the masses educating themselves and not making emotional decisions.

So sorry... you lost me on the second video with Hillary Clinton throwing out more excuses why she lost. This was an election between two people with 100% name recognition, and everyone already knew everything bad about both of them. It came down to a few states where people had a choice of who they trusted more with running things. Hillary Clinton did receive 3 million more votes than Donald Trump in total... but the entire 3 million advantage came from one state... California.

The United States is not a Democracy... the USA is a Republic. More total votes means nothing in a Presidential election. A President of the United States cannot ever be elected without reaching a threshold of support from all 50 states. Currently it's 270 Electoral Votes... Trump earned 306. Donald Trump is the President until January 2021. That's the end of that discussion.

I don't know much about Cambridge Analytica... they appear to be just another campaign management firm that creates negative advertising against candidates. There are many... and they all do it to everyone during every election. What they are in this scenario is some kind of counter argument to Fusion GPS... the firm hired by Hillary Clinton and the DNC to create more dirt on Trump than they already had.

The difference is CA didn't create dirt on Hillary to offer up to the FBI as real evidence to the FISA Court to wiretap the Hillary Clinton campaign. That's what Fusion GPS, Hillary Clinton, the DNC, John Podesta, Susan Rice, John Kerry, John Brennan, Loretta Lynch, Sally Yates, Jim Comey, Andrew McCabe, Peter Strzok, Lisa Page, Bruce Ohr, Samantha Power, Valerie Jarret, and Barack Hussien Obama did to Donald Trump. I could go on with more names, but I don't need to.

This is called conspiracy, and they should all hang.

derails himself due to mentioning of "Hillary", goes off into rant about possible conspiracy, ignores the various signs of smoke that some used to search for a fire.

On topic, sadly this is mostly about ethics and the boundries we set towards such applications as personalized marketing with its need for personalized info. It kicks right into the discussion about personal information/identity protection and how these should be handled not only by government but also by private enterprises.

On topic, sadly this is mostly about distraction. Every candidate hires these kind of people to do this to every other candidate in every election. Barack Obama hired Fusion GPS to damage Romney during the 2012 election. Obama crushed John McCain in 2008 by data mining information. Data mining has existed since data became available to mine. Fake outrage when Trump beats Hillary.

There is zero evidence the Trump campaign colluded with Russians to beat Hillary Clinton... yet the last 14 months have been consumed by a concocted scandal set up by top government agencies of the Obama Administration, to first white-wash the crimes of Hillary Clinton so she could be elected, second to destroy Donald Trump as a candidate, and third to frame Donald Trump in a fake scandal and cover their own asses, should he actually win. There is a mountain of evidence to support this... you are not looking.

Socialists love freedom of speech only when it's their speech. Anyone else wants to do the same, it's suddenly criminal. Make you a deal... you look after Belgium, and I'll look after the USA. We don't need your help with this... but keep watching, because the truth is coming out, and I want you to see it with your own eyes.

For christ sake, I am on YOUR side of this argument, geez!

If that's the truth then I misread your post and automatically assumed it was directed at me from our history on issues.

I apologize deeply for my error.

Probably was to platonic about my feelings about it, lets just say I dislike anything "marketing" related, regardless of intended purpose :D

Doesn't matter... apology still stands. I like you much more than Cambridge Analytica and Facebook combined.

  • 2 weeks later...
I think the coolest thing about Cambridge Analytica is how they are able to use data so effectively to make real world impacts. The few people with access to CA's "cultural weapon" have such great influence over the world. One of the first things I did after reading the stories was go to their web site to browse job openings. ^_^
