Agreed, both of these are awful. If pressed, I would rather be left at the altar, that way, at least my integrity (which I hold in high regard) would be intact.

It kind of reminds me of a story my priest would tell during his homily where some guy was robbed and he said he was thankful to God that he was the one robbed and not the robber. I wouldn't ever want to be the kind of person that would do that to someone

Of course not, but there are always clues that there is a problem. I wouldn’t marry someone I don’t know very, very well. I would not marry someone who had it in him to be that cruel to me. I am married because I wanted to spend my life with someone and I made damned sure he was someone I could trust with my heart. Yes, people are shocked to be left at the alter, but that way of abandoning someone is so profoundly and knowingly hurtful that I believe there would be warning signs that my man was capable of doing that to me.
