This is disturbing on so many levels. The road to hell is paved with good intentions, and I wager many in the United Kingdom wish they had a Constitution with a 1st Amendment that clearly states that their government shall pass no law to abridge freedom of speech. Read this...

https://www.cnet.com/news/uk-to-keep-social-networks-in-check-with-internet-safety-regulator/

A "Safety Regulator".

So my English cousins will now have their very own "Hall Monitor" to ensure that their fragile eyes don't see anything that Big Government doesn't want you to see. The Beatles... just the greatest band to ever exist... recorded a song back in 1968 called "Revolution" that was inspired by political protests at the time. It just might be time to sing those immortal words once again.

I strongly urge my UK friends to completely understand what it means to have a government appointed lackey deciding what you see and hear. This is coming from the USA... your strongest ally ever.

So you get a proposal that could be easily misinterpreted or wrongfully interpreted by personel and their methodology/ideology, so open to abuse and indeed censorschip.

How did this proposal find tractions? Cause the internet is an awfull place and mankind has even less qualms about being amoral when behind an internet connection.

PS. don't throw your 1st amendment into this, how did you forget PRISM and other such programs...

So, here's a bunch of things the government is unable solve, so they're shifting responsibility away from themselves. These include:

  •     Incitement of violence and the spread of violent (including terrorist) content
  •     Encouragement of self-harm or suicide
  •     The spread of disinformation and fake news
  •     Cyberbullying
  •     Children's access to inappropriate material
  •     Child exploitation and abuse content

Because it's not their citizens who are terrible human beings, and it certainly isn't the government that is incompetent and powerless to educate its citizenry, no. It's the tech platfom's fault! They're the evil ones!

That said, I'm not a big friend of the tech platforms either, as their business models are built around all the wrong incentives, which poisons the entire construct

I agree completely. I don't do social media, aside from this small place. Facebook and Twitter are evil, and I wish nothing but destruction for those platforms. My wife is all over FB, she absolutely refuses to talk politics to anyone she doesn't know, and she's more Republican than I am. I myself could never keep from talking politics, so it's best that I stay away.

The UK Government installing an internet hall monitor is the camel's nose under the tent. Soon you have the whole damn camel in there, and no way to get it out. Freedom gets chipped away, a piece at a time... then it takes a war to get it back.
