Indeed they are. I stopped giving a crap about them when they slapped their World of Warcraft aesthetic on every game they made since.

I will say that the Diablo 2 remaster looks amazing - precisely because it completely lacks said aesthetic.

I'm a Diablo fanatic. I still play every season of D3. So I will be picking up the Diablo 2 reboot.

But working at Blizzard back in the 90's was a circus... and I'm sure things are still done the same way.

I'm utterly shocked that it lasted this long. There were people that worked there that literally never went home.

I was a sound engineer and quality control. Most of my work was on WarCraft 2: Tides of Darkness. I was actually recruited by Chris Metzen and Shane Dabiri, along with several other colleagues from an organization called the International Fantasy Gaming Society. It was a live role playing organization that wrote and produced live games based on Dungeons and Dragons. I was President of the Los Angeles Chapter of the IFGS, and yes, we were a very large group of strange people that had a sizable presence at game conventions and renaissance fairs. I have been a hardcore gamer all my life, and I started with Chess. I will remain a gamer until I die.

Ha, nice. Sounds like you were there for the golden age. Did you work on SFX or the music?

I worked on everything you can hear. I didn't write or record the music, but I did sample it for digital delivery. Working at Blizzard, especially with sound was challenging. I had my office locked all the time, because it was really a sound studio. If you walked the halls you could hear 30 different songs coming from all the offices. Rarely could you make it through without stepping on a hot sauce packet or kicking an empty can. It was like trying to work, under extreme deadlines, in "Animal House".

The more I hear about it, the more it seems to be a '80 movies stereotypical frat house then an actual game studio...

Heh, interesting! Did you guys use stock sound effects mostly (if yes, from where?) or did you record yourselves.

Btw, although it isn't Warcraft 2, you might appreciate this video on where the original Doom sounds come from:

Intdeed, lol, although in the 90s I'm retty sure all game studios were like that. ID and Westwood certainly were...

We used sources from everywhere. We had great voice actors.

I have played first person shooters, but I never liked them very much.

I'm a creature of RPG and Strategy.

I bet they now wish they never merged with Activision, and just never hired women like it was before.
