  1. Can’t tell if serious...
  2. Well, it seems that thankfully the main structure remained intact, and the building can be rebuilt in a few years. Damage to the interior is still pretty bad.
  3. Well shit. Saw this today, and was going to post a topic when I got home. Even though this is still unfolding, it's obvious that the damage is catastrophic. I always wanted to visit Paris, but never actually got there, now it's uncertain that I'll ever get to see this world-famous landmark.
  4. I agree with all of this. i think rain johnson really screwed the pooch, and Kathleen Kennedy has no idea what she is doing. plus why is Rey so powerful. Luke was weak AF in the original trilogy. Rey has had a total of THREE lessons on the force and none are how to actually do anything. I hate Rey, Fin, and especially rose. She is worse than Jar Jar Rey really is the worst. We're two movies in and we still have NO idea what kind of person she actually is. That's true for all the other characters too but in the case of the main character, it's unforgivable.
  5. I'll watch it of course, but going in with 0 expectations. The Last Jedi killed Star Wars for me. Say what you will about the prequels, but they had an overarching plot (personally I very much enjoyed the politics), and actual character development at least for the main characters (Anakin, Padmé, Obi-wan) throughout the trilogy. In the sequels: - The whole setup seems weird and disjointed from the events the Return of the Jedi. - There doesn't seem to be a direction where things are headed - There is no character development whatsoever - There are plotholes and straight-up logical errors to the degree where to me, suspension of disbelief is no longer possible and the plot falls completely apart. This is because things in the new trilogy don't make sense within the context of the SW universe itself.
  6. So, here's a bunch of things the government is unable solve, so they're shifting responsibility away from themselves. These include: Incitement of violence and the spread of violent (including terrorist) content Encouragement of self-harm or suicide The spread of disinformation and fake news Cyberbullying Children's access to inappropriate material Child exploitation and abuse contentBecause it's not their citizens who are terrible human beings, and it certainly isn't the government that is incompetent and powerless to educate its citizenry, no. It's the tech platfom's fault! They're the evil ones! That said, I'm not a big friend of the tech platforms either, as their business models are built around all the wrong incentives, which poisons the entire construct

  12. A long piece, but worth the read: https://taibbi.substack.com/p/russiagate-is-wmd-times-a-million It's mostly on the role of the press in hyping up an issue that ended up biting them in the ass, further eroding their reputation. Too bad, because now, more then ever, we would need a credible, and rational press.
  13. True. TNP’s weight is over 90 kg-s.
  14. Meanwhile a turkish guy who reportedly fought in Chechnya and had ties to ISIS shot up a tram in Utrecht, 4 dead. I’ll eat my hat if this isn’t a “response” for the NZ shooting. The cycle of violence continues. https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-47615231
  15. Yeah, first reports said the guy had a firearm, but in fact he threw a credit card reader at the terrorist, and then picked up one of the emptied guns and threw that too, and broke a window. Apparently the guy thought he was being fired upon and fled.
  16. Well, we know for a fact that there were shootings at 2 locations simultaneously, so he must have had some accomplices, but the police may or may not have them in custody. I believe a big part of the problem is that political discourse in general has moved very far away from discussing and debating policy towards rallying people behind various identities. If we do not move forward from these hyperpartisan identity politics practiced by both the right AND left, we will continue to see the escalation of violence and social unrest. Terror attacks like this are a thing of their own of course, but not totally independent of the general public sentiment.
  17. This is a Breivik 2.0 attack. It's worrying to see how right-wing terrorism seems to be on the rise globally.
