2014 Formula 1 Cars
So Malaysia was dull. Que a year of people hitching about Hamilton's lack of talent and only winning in the best car.

2014 Formula 1 Cars
I'm so torn. On the one hand I am sad to see that Grosjean doesn't have a car that allows him to challenge and show what he can. On the other hand I am glad that Maldonado looks like a bigger idiot than ever now.

2014 Formula 1 Cars
Looks like the Red Bull finally got some laps in. But with Lotus admitting that their tests are not about finding car balance and Renault still several hundred laps behind the others I would guess there will be a few lurking snags ready to get them.

Anyone here know stuff about cars?
Petrol iz heaper per litre here. However because of less mpg its overall cost would be higher and attract z an extra £125 of tax a year. But then the engine iz about £2000 more

Anyone here know stuff about cars?
So basically I am shopping for a new car. In this vein I wondered down to my local car garage to look at some. The salesman told me that as I am unlikely to do more than 14 thousand miles a year (I've calculated about 12 thousand) and the majority of my journeys would be within the city I should not get a diesel and should instead get a Petrol car. His reasoning was that Diesel cars are legally mandated to have a DPF filter, which filters the soot from the engine. If the car doesn't do a lot of long journeys, the soot would build up and the filter could end up damaged, costing more to replace than the savings in fuel from the diesel engine. Looking at wikipedia it appears the car would require a sustained run of over 40mph to reach the temperature needed to avoid damaging the filter. So what I want to know is, does anyone know how much this is true, and how often I would have to do long journeys in the car to avoid damaging it?

Curious: what did you want to be, and what did you become?
I can't remember...didn't really have a firm ambition as a child. 16-17-Lawyer What I studied-Law Job I have now (age 22)-Local Government Project officer, working under an European Union contract to implement several hundred million euros of money from the European Regional Development Fund. I also worked as a Paralegal for a while. But my current job is 1) Better paid (2-3 thousand a year more than a Trainee solicitor 7 1/2 thousand a year more than a Paralegal) 2) Involves more of my skills from my degree than being a paralegal Couple of things I would say about degrees and university; 1) A degree does not guarantee a graduate job anymore. In the UK 50% of the population goes to higher education, you have to be better than just having a degree 2) Graduate jobs are very attainable with your degree provided that you did a degree that provides useful skills (ie law not literature) and did enough extra-curricular type activities (in my case running academic societies such as Model UN and Student associations) to make you stand out

2014 Formula 1 Cars
Red Bull were bragging before the break about how by being a de facto factory team the engine would be packaged so it fit with their design of car.

2014 Formula 1 Cars
Just to note, McLaren are still Mercedes powered, Honda are not in on the act until 2015. GIven two of the top 3 lap counters were mercedes it does seem that Engine has a big reliability side of it, with the Ferrari cars all looking much neater in terms of cooling probably giving the fastest times. The Red Bull is even tigher packaged that the Ferrari, which given how wide the rears are on the other Renault cars must be seen as a massive risk as it means that Renault are not confident in their engines cooling ability. However it is strange that their factory team (Red Bull are the de facto factory team) would be the ones to get it so wrong. On another note, does anyone else feel that the "floor" of the car, that big ugly square is just...strange looking? It kind of makes the car look like a badly manufactured toy.

Now the question will be if McLaren have discovered this years loophole?

2014 Formula 1 Cars
So the season tests have begun with the unveiling of the new F1 Cars. http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/formula1/25946895 We have the McLaren Anteater, the Sleek looking red Bull, The Ferrari Vacuum cleaner, the Lotus split nose and the Caterham....well no one knows what the fuck the caterham is supposed to be. So its waay to early to get an idea of how cars will finally perform, but I guess some people will be excited to see the Red Bull totally failing. Not only does the Renault engine have a problem, but the Red Bull seems to have a fundamental heating problem. To give an idea of how fundamental, it apparently normally takes ten laps for a car to start to overheat if it has a problem. Red Bull overheats in one lap. So even if they fix that they could well go into the next test having no idea if it will overheat in ten laps time.
