  1. Haha no, I'm not terribly looking forward to summer, although on the plus side, El Nino actually has a somewhat limited effect on the area I live in, at least compared to other, more populous parts of the nation. Also ocean currents along the East coast have been staying a lot warmer than normal (I wonder why!!!!), which has the potential to mitigate a lot of the effect along the coast. Going to really suck to be in the south and inland though.
  2. That just makes them better to have with a nice tea or cappuccino. Also Hi Betsy, I am well enough, et toi?

  4. I have generally preferred a good biscuit over cookies.
  5. I come before you with sad news My friend, and fellow former IRON Councillor, Mia tragically passed away, 3rd of August 2023, aged 31. I was fortunate enough to encounter Mia in my role in foreign affairs as a counterpart in the alliance TOOL, who were our friends and allies before eventually merging into IRON. While she was always fun to work with, it wasn't until Mia was an amazing young woman. She was warm and caring, fun and had a wicked sense of humour. Mia brought life to every community she partook in and brightened the lives of those who knew her as friends. Sadly, she struggled with chronic health issues her entire life, but the strength of her determination and ambitions saw her to many impressive successes in spite of the challenges. It comes as no surprise that when combined with her cunning political acumen she was responsible for many of IRON's greatest diplomatic achievements and is well known, and now mourned, across the cyberverse. Ultimately Mia was my friend for the last 15 years and will be dearly missed.
  6. This made me curious, and to the extent we have records, the longest-lived spider made it to 28 years old. It was apparently a tarantula from Mexico. That record, and longevity records for other animals (dogs, rabbits, goldfish, etc.) from here: http://webecoist.momtastic.com/2010/07/13/grand-paws-10-of-the-worlds-longest-lived-animals/ (The most interesting one on their list was a koi that made it to 226 years old!) Last year they found an abnormally large sydney funnel webspider with a 2m wide nest that they believe to be between 25 to 30 years old. Not much of a pet to keep unless you're a venomologist.
  7. I win? On second thoughts, lets not win this thread, t'is a silly thread.
  8. It happens. edit: also banned for something
  9. Banned to fill in time. Not as satisfying as real banning nor as rage mail inducing as deleting nations was but it'll have to suffice.
  10. No, sometime in uhhh late 07 or so the cybernations moved to the forums I linked after a big attack on their website.
  11. This inspired me to go through some of my announcements, I think this is my favourite DoW I posted for IRON http://forums.cybernations.net/index.php?/topic/21080-iron-declaration-of-war/
  12. Ah yeah. now it works and I remember how much of a pain that was to make with everyone, and that's only 4 years of history. It needs a whole 6 years of updates! I don't envy anyone who ever decides to do that job.
  13. There is this, which is essentially an edited version of a history I wrote, it only really covers the first couple of years though. http://cybernations.wikia.com/wiki/History_of_the_Independent_Republic_of_Orange_Nations I think there was a semi-updated version that went up to about 2010 or so buried somewhere on these forums, but someone else will have to do the digging
  14. Good God this thing is still going on. XV
  15. PC supremacy. BF3 is pretty amazing but it has a hell of a lot o nigglingf flaws as well... that's still lightyears ahead of MW3 though :V
  16. Yeah but if we can work out fusion then we can just breed our own He-3 without needing to mine the moon.
  17. Haha works for me.
  18. We'd be better off investing in things like LFTR reactors than cold fusion. Or straight up hot-fusion.
  19. Fun fact, if matter were to fall backwards in time, it would look and behave exactly like anti-matter. Also there's heaps of anti-particles popping in and out of existence within every single proton constantly. It's a real complicated mess.
  20. I'm not sure we'll ever find a direct use of this knowledge (as in a means to manipulate the higgs field) - considering the rather extreme conditions required to even produce. It's hard to say though - no one expected to be cooking when they invented microwaves. However it's vastly important because it confirms parts of existing theories and challenges others - it means we can now solidly move forward with better theories. The standard model, as it exists, is actually woefully inadequate. It outright ignores gravity for instance and dark energy. Whether or not it's ever a directly useful technology, the knowledge that can be built on this is very important and probably more directly useful. Not to mention all the new technologies and processes invented for the LHC to work since construction started is expected to pay back the 7.5B E something like 350% which is hard to complain about.
  21. Perhaps but I don't think so. Especially considering that the Higgs mechanism only imparts a small amount of the mass of matter (fermions specifically). Whereas I understand gluon self-interactions make up the majority of mass so that even if the fundamental particles were mass-less (somehow having disabled the interactions with the Higgs field) you would still have significant mass in matter from the gluons doing their thing.
  22. You know what's really damn impressive and explains why it was so hard to find? The Higgs-Boson has a mass of ~125GeV right? That's about equivalent to Caesium. That means the particle is heavier than a little under half of the known atomic elements.

  24. CMS was such a troll, coming to a total of only 4.9σ after starting out with all those fives. They put on a good presentation though with lots of awesome jokes. Atlas however was making comic sans cool again. Hilariously bad presentation but at least they pulled out the results. Big day for Peter Higgs. In tears recalling how Heisenberg had flat out told him he was wrong. A lot of disappointed physicists out there today and SUSY people are gonna be pissed but really it seems nothing is gonna kill that thing, it just gets made harder to test.
