Baptized minimally, communion plausibly. Note that you will have to get a sit-down (plural) with the priest anyway, regardless of your religious background.

Probably some group "events", having your face seen on a sunday morning and not claiming to belief in Cthulhu should do you fine already.

You could have already been validly baptized (say you are a Protestant or an Orthodox Christian), in such case it usually comes down to local practice and the strictness of adherence to the doctrine by the particular priest.

If you have not yet been baptized, then you can still get married in a Catholic Church, but it will not be a sacrament (i.e. it would amount to a blessing). Either way a special dispensation is required from the Bishop of the Bishopric in question. The issue of indissolubility of such a marriage is more complicated though.

So here is what my fiance and I went through when we were getting married. We first met with the Priest and he told us to take a questionnaire. The point of the questionnaire is to see what differences you and your fiance have. You each take it separately, and the point of it is to make sure the two of you are both on the same page regarding a variety of topics. After you sit down and discuss the results thats when the marriage preparations begin. Details are discussed about the wedding and you take a one session marriage class. After that its time to organize the rest of the wedding.

A lot of people have this misconception that its a long, drawn out process. But the truth is that its relatively simple. Apart from taking the questionnaire and the marriage class, there is nothing out of the ordinary.

I have to agree with everyone who says it's largely up to the flexibility of the priest. My story:

To begin with, I'm an Atheist and my wife is RC. She wanted a Catholic wedding for religious reasons, and I wanted one for the nice ceremony. It did facilitate the process that I was baptized as a baby and could even present a certificate of it (the church in which it happened held the records).

The priest we picked had a very flexible attitude. Basically, the only criteria he stood is for one of us to be Catholic, although I never explicitly told him I was an Atheist. We both presented all church-related documents and certificates we had, then picked a date. After that, we had to attend a number of sessions with other to-be-married couples that the priest hosted. To my honest surprise, there was barely any religion discussed there, and were mostly psychology-themed (e.g.:with a range of subjects, like how to make compromise, show affection to different personality types, etc.). I dare say I even somewhat enjoyed them. Then, there was one last private meeting with the priest where we discussed the details of the ceremony, and that was it!

So yeah, pick a flexible priest and all will be fine!

Well, I would like to get married one day and the girl I am talking to wants to do it in the Catholic church and she is a member and I was wondering how do you do it in the church and what is there all to do and what is it all about?

here is what she said

Lots lol...5 counseling sessions with the priest signed affidavits from 2 witnesses each...and an engagement encounter that lasts a day and a personality test and a questionnaire before beginning the whole process [/size]

Essentially the Catholic church does not marry non-Catholics in their churches. How committed you need to be will depend on the priest. They also take the vow before God part seriously, so effectively they e,left a period of support and testing to ensure you can keep the vow and fully understand what that entails.

There are ways to simplify the matter, although I know nothing of them. My sister (a practicing protestant) married her husband (a RC) in a catholic church and was wed by a catholic priest. They managed to dodge all the counseling and such.

I studied in a Catholic school, 90% of teachers werent priests. I received the sacrament of confirmation. Naw im agnostic.

Background:

Since 1978 Spain has no official religion although its tradition is based on christianism (Remember the spanish inquisition?), we got meny old churches and cathedrals and there are public events like easter (Not like in the Tom Cruise "Mission: Impossible film) or christmas, as well my name is "Marcos" like the apostle. Some people goes for civil weedings in the town hall. You can see some foreign Jehova witnesses and meny muslims. Its strange that there are really few jews.

Back in topic: My best female friend will get married by church next year and she told me about what they have to do before the weeding:

1. They talked with the priest and he was more interested in the money than in they beliefs

2. As they live in Italy and they will come to spain for the weeding, they will have to assist to a catechesis weekend.

Usually more catechesis are needed, but you can negotiate lol

Never heard about personality tests or cathechesis witnesess. Those are needed for signing something after the weeding and the civil register.

Hope ive helped you =D
