I had a lot of fun doing PvP over a modem in Descent 2, and made a few multiplayer levels using the provided editor... it had a lot of potential. The AI for the dogfights, the squadron control system, the option to land anywhere, the extreme difficulty in bombing, the fact you could actually get lose AI in the clouds and the harrowingly dangerous campaign were awesome. (Though the combat flgiht simulator games pre-jet age deserve a mention here... post ww2 flight sims have too much assistance in the way of guided missiles and telling you where to fire to be challenging).
