FIFA & Corruption

Featured Replies

So recently the US Department of Justice indicted fourteen people in connection with bribery and corruption charges.

The FBI recently raided a headquarters of FIFA's affiliate in the US.

So did the Swiss government.

Do you think the World Cup should take place in Russia 2018 and Qatar 2022?

Personally the Qatar one, I oppose the most.

Why do you oppose having them in Qatar?

1. Temperature can exceed up to 120 degrees Fahrenheit, think about why on  earth would they pick a desert spot other than bringing the sport to the Middle East?

2. If it takes place during the winter its been going to get hectic for audiences like me and especially many Americans, during Winter time there is American Football season going on, basketball season, and hockey season. Also there are other European leagues that can interfere if the World cup takes during that time.

3. Migrant conditions, more than 200 people die each week due to the horrible work conditions. Many of these are workers are from India, Pakistan,  and Nepal.

4. Corruptions allegations by the FIFA members. If you haven't heard the voters who voted for the World cup bid were bribed.

I am a die hard football fan (Forza Juve!), and have been all my life. I for one hope they tear apart that organisation...it's been an embarrassment to the sport for far too long.

Agreed. I just hope the President loses the election this Friday.

Other than the Swiss? And the Swiss are the ones that matter because that is where the FIFA HQ is, so the only spot to effectively get them all in one spot.

Personally I am somewhat meh about football (beyond thinking oh god please let it be more than 3 years before the crappy English "we are gonna win we are gonna win we are the greatest oh crap we didn't win a single game" cycle starts again) but stench of corruption in FIFA is such that it sets a bad example to the entire world and makes corruption seem ok when used in such a high profile event. Therefore this story is excellent news on that basis alone.

Good points. Especially points 3 & 4.

#2.

Football > all sports.

That 200/wk. number is wrong: that would be 10,000 per year.

This LA Times article puts the value at 1/day or 365 per year, while this Guardian article gives 0.5/day or 182 per year.

All numbers are too many, but one is fragrantly incorrect.

Now to see if the Olympics gets hit, too.

I don't know why cities bother applying to host global events like this. You get a little prestige and tourism, but end up spending far more on facilities and useless "infrastructure" to satisfy the pride of the organizers. The 2000 Olympics led Greece to its current insolvency, and I can only hope Russia keeps wasting money on the Olympics.

I was just exaggerating my point if you get it. I just estimated those numbers.

Now to see if the Olympics gets hit, too.

Many places have come to this conclusion.  Check out the choices for the 2022 Winter Olympics: China or Kazakhstan.  People in other countries (e.g. Oslo, Norway) decided it wasn't worth the cost, sometimes via a direct vote.  Of course, the governments in China and Kazakhstan have no need to be responsive to their citizenry.

In Fairness the London Olympics did quite a good job of sustainability, and made sure they had plans for all facilities or that they were only temporary. There was also quite a good job of making it more nationwide through the national lottery and building various sports facilities to try and encourage a public health benefit from the high profile of the games.

Back on topic, the Russians are claiming its all a conspiracy.

Seriously who the hell thought that holding a major sporting event in Qatar was a good idea?

"Which team are you rooting for?"

"Neither of them because they're guaranteed to collapse from heatstroke before the whistle even blows."

Haha I agree too, its a shame to have it there

Why do you oppose having them in Qatar?

This is why:

I agree that supports my previous point :D

To counter the heat they might build an in-door field. I'm not a soccer fan, so maybe that is super unheard of in soccer.. but it seems like it wouldn't affect the play of the game much, if at all.

But the worker deaths & the bribery is plenty enough for me to support it NOT being held in Qatar. Just saying, the heat they might be able to work around.

Big Ego: Climate-controlled soccer fields were the plan when proposed back in 2011:

The reality is that construction has not proceeded as promised (and was probably not possible to achieve even had everything been perfect), so Qatar's answer is "maybe play in the middle of the night when it's cooler?"

I kid you not: http://www.thepostgame.com/blog/daily-take/201410/qatars-latest-idea-address-heat-concerns-playing-world-cup-middle-night

I'm still pissed they are having it at Qatar now the UEFA is going to plan to boycott the World Cup and imagine without them. I think Fifa is just a bs organization that feeds only in corruption and greed. The only way Fifa can solve this problem is let the president resign or disband, there's only two ways it can go.

Hmmm interesting article to read.

Though a year ago it provides the reason why it shouldn't be held.
