http://www.theguardian.com/environment/2015/jul/16/warming-of-oceans-due-to-climate-change-is-unstoppable-say-us-scientists

The warming of the oceans due to climate change is now unstoppable after record temperatures last year, bringing additional sea-level rise, and raising the risks of severe storms, US government climate scientists said on Thursday.

The annual State of the Climate in 2014 report, based on research from 413 scientists from 58 countries, found record warming on the surface and upper levels of the oceans, especially in the North Pacific, in line with earlier findings of 2014 as the hottest year on record.

Global sea-level also reached a record high, with the expansion of those warming waters, keeping pace with the 3.2 ± 0.4 mm per year trend in sea level growth over the past two decades, the report said.

Scientists said the consequences of those warmer ocean temperatures would be felt for centuries to come – even if there were immediate efforts to cut the carbon emissions fuelling changes in the oceans.

“I think of it more like a fly wheel or a freight train. It takes a big push to get it going but it is moving now and will contiue to move long after we continue to pushing it,” Greg Johnson, an oceanographer at Noaa’s Pacific Marine Environmental Laboratory, told a conference call with reporters.

“Even if we were to freeze greenhouse gases at current levels, the sea would actually continue to warm for centuries and millennia, and as they continue to warm and expand the sea levels will continue to rise,” Johnson said.

On the west coast of the US, freakishly warm temperatures in the Pacific – 4 or 5F above normal – were already producing warmer winters, as well as worsening drought conditions by melting the snowpack, he said.

The extra heat in the oceans was also contributing to more intense storms, Tom Karl, director of Noaa’s National Centers for Environmental Information, said.

The report underlined 2014 as a banner year for the climate, setting record or near record levels for temperature extremes, and loss of glaciers and sea ice, and reinforcing decades-old pattern to changes to the climate system.

Four independent data sets confirmed 2014 as the hottest year on record, with much of that heat driven by the warming of the oceans.

Globally 90% of the excess heat caused by the rise in greenhouse gas emissions is absorbed by the oceans.

More than 20 countries in Europe set new heat records, with Africa, Asia and Australia also experiencing near-record heat. The east coast of North America was the only region to experience cooler than average conditions.

Alaska experienced temperatures 18F warmer than average. Spring break-up came to the Arctic 20-30 days earlier than the 20th century average.

“The prognosis is to expect a continuation of what we have seen,” Karl said.

Boston had a problem this past winter. They were buried in snow. They trucked all that snow into one place and it created a mountain of snow 75 feet high. It just now finished melting and left nothing but a pile of trash that got caught up in the snow removal. I don't read The Guardian... I won't read The Guardian. They are an army of leftie zealots obssessed with turning the planet into their version of utopia... and they have no problem lying about anything to achieved their goals.

So now that you believe we're all fucked... will you now just drop the complaining and let us enjoy our lives? I didn't think so.

It's okay :D

I usually enjoy a good fucking, myself. And that Mother Nature be all sexy.

This happened yesterday, and I wanted to post this but I was very busy and had to leave. Foxy and I were talking about this a couple weeks ago, and I don't think she believed me. I said California created their own drought by shutting down their water system to save a fish, and this is the House addressing that issue.

http://thehill.com/business-a-lobbying/248188-house-approves-gop-california-drought-bill

The Hill is a left of center news site that I read every day. Their reporting is biased, but at least it's honest.

"The legislation is the Republican Party’s signature measure to confront California’s four-year-long drought and an attempt to fight back at Democratic policies that the GOP says prioritize fish over humans.

The bill would mandate certain volumes of water that the federal government must push through the Central Valley Project, a massive system of dams, reservoirs, aqueducts and other infrastructure built to take water from California’s wetter areas to its dryer ones."

To be fair to the fish, Californian farmers are contributing a great deal. Texas farmers in the panhandle are doing the same thing.

You have to take a moment, and look at your natural vegetation. If it isn't tall prairie, maybe you shouldn't be growing cotton/wheat/soybeans. If it isn't a forest, maybe you shouldn't be growing almonds/avocados.

Rain patterns just don't give a fuck.

Pitiful... fear mongering leftist liberals.  Doing anything to scare anyone into their camp.  Their tactics of dividing and conquering are so counter productive to a conducive American society.  We were built and based upon Individual Liberties and Freedom for all, regardless of Race, Sex, Religion, or Creed.  I have studied Marine Biology and Environmental Science, maintained a 100 in both and received the outstanding academic award for the course, performed many studies as well.  Climate change is an inevitable part of our world, we experience periods of heating and cooling, ice ages and periods now known as the long summer.  Whether or not humans are spending up global warming will not affect what so ever the cycle that the earth has been undergoing since its inception million of years ago.  The left will politicize any issue, whether it be race, science, religion, or flat out domestic terrorism.  Anything that they can grasp to divide this country they will do.  So much nowadays is skewed.  There is no more fair media, everything has a bias.  So when it comes to this climatical fear mongering I for one have had enough.

Recently I was thinking who cares and well humanity probably should go extinct as well.

Humans have adapted to climage changes before. Oh, it won't be pretty, but there are steps you can take.

Honestly, I'm more concerned about the end of work. I can always eat fewer calories. If I can't afford those calories, well, then I'm fucked.

We've never adapted to climate change like this before. Ground water is running out, forcing people to migrate which strains the areas they migrate to. Governments can't keep up and the next thing you know, people start killing each other.

Already happened in Syria with the drought. Then people started flocking into urban areas because there was no work, food or water in urban areas. Then all hell broke loose.

The same thing is happening in the Arabian peninsula. Safe to say, the middle east and Sahara are already feeling the droughts of climate change, and it's only going to spread. As it does, less land becomes habitable or suitable for agriculture. People will migrate to already densely populated urban areas and push those communities into instability.

We may be adaptable, but we've never done this with 7 billion people before, and the problem of dwindling global resources is also new. The current population is clearly unsustainable.

I was just looking at this last night:

http://www.thetruthdenied.com/news/wp-content/uploads/2014/09/Guidesontes1.jpg

Conspiracy theorists think these thing are some NWO BS where they are going to kill everyone. But those idiots clearly havent read what is on these things.

http://otherworldmystery.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/georgia-guidestones-rules.jpg

How the fuck does that sound like a coming military take over? If you ask me, we know that some unknown group of people built these. Nobody knows who it was, but clearly they have a purpose. The description of the stones themselves, engraved just next to them tells us their purpose:

"Let these be guide stones to an age of reason".

Nothing sinister here at all. I think whoever put these here saw this coming and built these as a guide for when we all kill ourselves through overpopulation. Some say it was the Rosicrucians. Which, based on what I know about them, would make sense. They often tend to have an interest in attracting intellectuals and geniuses. Their mythical founder spent his life studying the religions of the middle east.

It's sad to see that people deface these things with stupid, idiotic graffiti and pay no attention to what they say.

These things are even built with perfect precision.

The four outer stones are oriented to mark the limits of the 18.6 year lunar declination cycle.[5] The center column features a hole drilled at an angle from one side to the other, through which can be seen the North Star, a star whose position changes only very gradually over time. The same pillar has a slot carved through it which is aligned with the Sun's solstices and equinoxes. A 7/8" aperture in the capstoneallows a ray of sun to pass through at noon each day, shining a beam on the center stone indicating the day of the year.[2]

FoxFire, there are actions you, individually, can take to ready yourself. First, change your diet. Meat once very two days. Focus on complex carbs and veggies as much as you can. That'll make your calorie consumption more carbon efficient and more in line with the historical norm. The entire world is growing obese on the amount and types of food we have available. We need to switch to a more Eastern diet developed to support intellectual activity, rather than the Western diet developed to support physical work.

Next, of course, is to drop all other consumption as radically as you can. Change your identity from physical objects to intellectual ones. You've obviously already started. Spread this by encouraging and judging others on what they've done, rather than what they have. The more people that support intellectual values, the closer we'll get to the tipping point of everyone switching to more efficient ways of living.

Then find out how to produce more yourself. And by that I mean PRODUCE not CONSUME. The education industry is built on trying to convince people that consumption is actually production. Look at the top ten jobs by salary. Find one that you are interested in and believe you can accomplish. If you don't like/can't do any of those, go down to the next ten. And the next until you find one you like and that has openings/educational opportunities in your area. Don't underestimate the power of student loans. If you keep your consumption low, student loans help more than hurt. People get in trouble because they do stupid shit like go to the bar every day or buy four-wheelers with their student loan money (yes, I know people that have done both of those things). Don't be afraid to do something you consider "undesirable". Garbagemen in my city make more than I did before I got a license, even though I had a degree.

Also, don't be afraid to do something that you minimally like, but don't think you have talent for. Talent is mostly developed over time, not an innate trait. Enjoyment occurs when you perform activities you are good at, which changes over time. A good programmer can have just as much fun programming as a writer does writing. More people write because most of us have been writing since we were six. Therefore we are all better at it and enjoy it more. Programming doesn't start until much later, so you have to go through the 3-4 year grind before it becomes enjoyable.

Finally, maintain your low levels of consumption while accumulating enough savings to ensure you can live in the future without working. The video Lysistrata commented on makes a strong argument that soon no one will be able to work because everything will be automated. When that happens, companies will be making all of the money. Make sure you're on their side by being a stockholder. Even if the government taxes them to expand the Welfare system, any money distributed will be barely above subsistence. The poor will be left in overlooked tenements with minimal entertainment and just enough food to live.

Get on the producer wagon, or get left behind. Get on the intellectual wagon, or prepare for a dying world.

anecdotes mean nothing

More Recent Scientific Opinion:

Also the climate changes naturally which means you have heat and cold patches. Global variation over a increased period of time shows the graph more or less evens out. Climate change occurs regardless of gas emisions.

This was addressed previously, yes climate change does occur naturally but usually takes thousands of years to go full cycle. The rate of change we are seeing right now is way too fast for it to be a completely natural driven occurrence. Scientific evidence has been presented for years to back this up. But hey what do those journal published, peer reviewed and general consensus scientists know. They are all just a bunch a hippy loving liberal scum.

I love it how our countries (The US conservatives in Particular) international opinions are always referenced with national experiences. For instance you say us liberals are just a bunch of socialist lovers who want to turn this country into the second coming of the USSR. But what you fail to recognize is that the scientific community is an internationally educated community that could care less about liberal american viewpoints, to call them all "an army of leftie zealots obssessed with turning the planet into their version of utopia... and they have no problem lying about anything to achieved their goals" really shows how much of the right wing cool-aid your currently drinking.

To the point made in the quote above, yes.... climate change can occur regardless of gas emissions in a natural sense however that does not exclude the FACT. The fact is gas emissions (Man Made & Natural) is one of many major driving contributors in the cause and progression of climate change. Your clever use of wording is the reason why so many idiots don't believe it even exists.

I'd like to come to a understandable agreement with you right wing nut jobs. I'll agree that the climate change we are seeing now may possibly have been put in place or started naturally however you must agree that mankind has made every effort possible in failing to prevent it from happening in our lifetime and/or minimizing its effects on our species. To put this in a nice figurative way, climate change is a fire in your kitchen, mankind's contributions are like "pouring gasoline on that fire causing the a 5-Alarm that burns down not just your home but the entire neighborhood"

SORRY EMU, this post is not directly targeted at you its more for your fellow contributing partners in this thread. Your attempt at a fact based opinion is commendable but the evidence you present is flawed. That study done by the university of Alabama is misleading and has been disputed by NOAA.

As per NOAA's publication;

"Much study has been devoted to the possible causes of an apparent decrease in the upward trend of global surface temperatures since 1998, a phenomenon that has been dubbed the global warming “hiatus.” Here, we present an updated global surface temperature analysis that reveals that global trends are higher than those reported by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, especially in recent decades, and that the central estimate for the rate of warming during the first 15 years of the 21st century is at least as great as the last half of the 20th century. These results do not support the notion of a “slowdown” in the increase of global surface temperature."

But hey NOAA is liberal scum as well right??????

Whatever your personal opinions are on the matter, wouldn't you rather be safe than sorry. If this is real, the human species will be put in jeopardy. Hind sight being 20/20 we should take measures to prevent any possible danger to our existence. Lets put politics aside and trust that the scientists know what their talking about and do something about this.

Hi Zacch. I'm too old to drink Kool-aid, it's really awful and I would never touch the stuff, but that's our metaphor that we have used since Jonestown to explain the never ending cases of liberal lunacy that keep dividing the country... you saying it to me just sounds silly. I voted for Ronald Reagan twice and I have lived through more than one doomsday scenario from college graduates... oh sorry, I mean "scientists"... that want to scream "we're all gonna die". Close examination of who pays them can tell you more about their credibilty than trying to stay awake through their long meandering speeches about world devastation. I'm really not interested.

But just for shits and giggles I'll ask you... What is your solution?

Something tells me it has everything to do with money, and when you're done, I strongly doubt you will allow us to just say "no".

I find your opinions about our scientific institutions and professionals insulting. Having an engineering degree myself (Electrical Engineering if you must ask), I can tell you being in that type of scientific field requires a level of intelligence that you personally may just not understand. And acting like the primates we are, you are afraid of what you don't understand and have dismissed it merits.

To answer your question;

There is no solution, as the title of this thread infers, We're already fucked.

The real question is what can we do to mitigate the effects of climate change on the existence of the human race.
