I know you guys want to know what I think about last nights debate. It was my birthday yesterday, so I was a bit busy until late last night when I watched the whole thing on my DVR. First I will list my thoughts on if I feel they improved, hurt, or fell flat.

Donald Trump - Down

Ben Carson - Down

Jeb Bush - Up

Ted Cruz - Flat

Carly Fiorina - Up

Scott Walker - Flat

Marco Rubio - Up

Chris Cristie - Up

Mike Huckabee - Down

Rand Paul - Up

John Kasich - Down

The big question is will this bring down Donald Trump?... my guess is no. I felt he made a grave tactical error last night when he strongly went hard against George W. Bush. Trump was in the Reagan Library with hundreds of hard Conservative Republicans that voted for W. twice, and they all have great respect for the Bush family. It set up Jeb to receive the loudest applause of the entire night, but Trump was talking to the 22.9 million people that were watching on TV, so it may have been a smart move looking at the big picture.

After he made a remark to Rand Paul about him polling at 1%, I think someone (probably his daughter) got to him during a commercial break and told him to lay off, that he was coming off as too much of an asshole, because he was a total nice guy the rest of the night. My guess is he will remain on top.

I love Marco Rubio. He just radiates that he has all the chops needed to command every issue. Everyone just needs to be educated that some people do not look their age.

I thought that CNN did an awful job. The questions were asked in a way to start fights. "Senator Cruz, you said you love bacon... Senator Paul has said you're a pig for eating too much bacon... How do you respond?" Plus you had 3 moderators, but Jake Tapper talked 98% of the time. The format was stupid, but they were smart enough to give it 3 hours knowing that 2 would not cut it with 11 people. We all need this to get trimmed down, and I'm looking forward to more of them dropping out.

I can go into detail with my thoughts if anyone is interested in chiming in.

I actually like Rand Paul, I wish he was polling better.

All I can say about the debates, and I could care less what anyone thinks about it, but it was an absolute joke.

You know why the mods were seen as 'starting fights'? Well gee, when things are said about another person, when that person wasn't there to defend themselves, well, it was already out in the open, so now it'd be amusing to see their responses to them face to face (so to speak).

Other than that, the only thing that could have really driven this 'debate' (if you really want to call it that) home, is adding Scott Walker to the lineup.

Still not sure why Trump is even running, considering he really has zero political experience, and his business experience is rather scary as well. Not to say that I'd even consider Carly based on that as well.

Rand did much better last night because he didn't fall into the sandbox with Trump. He allowed Trump to look the child and stuck to his Libertarian roots. I don't think it will get him much traction, but I am hoping Rand will pull out in time to protect his Senate seat. He is badly needed in the Senate. I feel the same way about Marco, but I think he has made the decision to leave the Senate no matter what happens. If he fails at getting the nomination, he would obviously be on the short list for VP. Marco has never lost an election, and he crushed Charlie Crist twice when he won his Senate seat, so I would never count him out.

I don't know what you were watching, but Scott Walker was there.

Happy birthday, Lysistrata!

The Republicans need Trump there for the ratings and to make them seem more moderate. It will help them in the general.

Rand and Carly had the best answers by far. Rubio looked good too. Jeb lacked confidence. Ultimately I'd love to see Fiorina vs. Clinton, not just because they happen to be the best candidates, but also because then we wouldn't have to listen to endless talk analyzing how gender is influencing the outcome.

But overall the debate sucked. :P

Thank you Jessica! Fiorina vs. Hillary would be smokin' hot... just the entertainment value alone of watching Hill get humiliated and hammered into a deceitful pussbag of steaming goo... I would have it on Blu-Ray to pass on to my grandkids.

EDIT: Having just seen the Carson comments is it that the Republican party wants to be unelectable? Because that is how you make yourself unelectable.  :picard:

If you're talking about his position on electing a muslim, just ask all of us... the vast majority of us would not ever vote for a muslim. Islam does not work together with the US Constitution. This is why Obama had all his school records sealed. When he went to school in Indonesia as a child, his religion was stated as Islam. We don't know how long this went on, but if his life was looked into as much as Sarah Palin was... then we would not have the problems we have now. Did you forget so soon what happened to Democrats in the 2014 mid-terms? Your statement about Republicans being "unelectable", is complete fantasy.

First new poll came out today. Trump dropped to 24%, Fiorina jumped big-time to 15%, Carson dropped to 14%, and Rubio jumped up to 11%. I like the changes even though the debate was horseshit. Maybe the next one will actually deal with issues.

If the Republican frontrunners continue creating the impression they agree with assertions that Obama is a Muslim, and making statements that no Muslim can be president, then they risk becoming unelectable. One of the main reasons (from my view) that the Republican party lost the 2012 election was that they made the assumption that Obama could not win, and therefore all that mattered was winning the primaries, and then you could start picking out new curtains for the Oval office.

With statements like Carson's and the attitude of Trump I get the feeling they think that provided they win the Republican base they are guaranteed office because they believe Hillary Clinton can't be elected. Which will create a repeat of 2012 and giftwrap the election for Clinton.

Ultimately the Republican party has struggled to get minority votes, and with Trump and Carson acting the way they are they will continue to struggle to get minority votes. This is after coming into the election with the mainstream identifying that they need to win those votes to get elected.

Let's be honest. I know it's difficult, but please tell me... How do you know Obama is not Muslim?

He really doesn't strike me as someone very religious at all. He doesn't talk about God unless he's speaking to religious people for political purposes. He attended the Black Panther Church of Rev. Jeremiah Wright in his early political career to get the black vote in the most corrupt city in the country... Chicago, Illinois. I have no idea what he believes in. I don't know if he reads the Bible, the Koran, or the Art of the Deal. I don't know if he takes communion, shakes a dead lizard, or rubs his forehead on a rug. I really don't give a shit. Here's one for you... If there is nothing wrong with being a Muslim... Why are people denying it so strongly?

There will never, in my lifetime at least, be an openly Muslim President of the United States. Do you know why? I'll tell you...

September 11, 2001. This alone is all that is needed.

Just for a little perspective... we have only had one openly Catholic President, his name was John F. Kennedy. We have never had a Mormon, Buddist, Hindu, or Jewish President either. OMG! Where is the outrage! But it's kinda like Barack Obama not being able to say the words "Islamic Terrorist". We are a Christian nation because all our Presidents have been, or claim to be.

Romney lost in 2012 because he wasn't liked enough in 4 states. It is an uphill battle when we have so many severely stupid people that only think of themselves, their own little pet peeves, and accept no responsibility for their poor decisions.

So thank you for your concern Ice... but us Republicans, and all us Americans, will be fine.

We shall, and always do, take care of things.

Obama is obviously a Muslim. Here he is seen praying in front of a crescent.

obama-cover.jpg

Constantly talking about your favorite fantasy is irritating no matter what flavor it takes: Christian, Islam, Buddhist, Trekkie, or Jedi. Just because your particular fanfic is older does not make it special. Obama has chosen to not be annoying about his faith. This is to be celebrated, not derided. It's Christians like him that make me think religion should be tolerated as a cultural tradition. It's Christians like Kim Davis that make me wonder if we should have a Constitutional Amendment that requires government officials to operate in a secular manner. Oh wait, we do. You are not allowed to enforce a religious practice as a government official. Disallowing gay marriage in any fashion is a religious practice. I won't go into marriage itself (which I don't think the government should be licensing at all whether gay or straight, let contracts/religious authorities handle it with no formal legal recognition).

If you, (a)attack secularism (b)think homosexuality is an abnormal and new phenomenon or (c ) think only God should heal the sick, I will vote against you every single time and make fun of you in front of everyone I meet.

Obama is definitely not a practicing muslim. It would simply not be possible to maintain such a pretense for so many years in Public Office, surrounded by so many people 24 hours a day. It doesn't work. As for the issue of whether he is or not, if he were (which he isn't) it would mean he was a liar on a fairly major issue of personal circumstance, which is why he denied it.

As for Carson's statement, what he said was not that background mistrust would stop a Muslim becoming President, instead he said that Islam was inconsistent with the US constitution and therefore he would oppose it. That is a very different statement, and shows a fundamental lack of knowledge of World Affairs, as the most populous Islamic country (Indonesia) in the world has a functioning democracy and the President is a Muslim. To say that Islam is inconsistent with democracy is simply wrong.

I think Kim Davis should have resigned if she is incapable of doing her job. They should not have thrown her in jail. They should have just gone through the procedure to remove her from her duties, if she refused to quit. All marriage laws should be repealed, and replaced, with common sense civil union legislation in order to separate church and state... but Democrats never want to solve problems. They want to keep them around so they can pull them out like a credit card during election time to gin up the base.

It's worth noting that the incompatible religion argument has been made before against Catholicism. JFK did not let the pope run the country.

Also, I agree with you on marriage, Lys. It should be a civil contract between two people and/or a ceremony recognized by religious organizations. You either see an attorney or see a priest. Priests are allowed to provide services based on religious practices, while attorneys are not as a condition of their license. Any legal person above the age of majority can enter into this contract in any form, including poly marriages or asexual civil partnerships.

Marriage is an artifact of a time when paternity could be uncertain and women were not given rights to property and work. It is outdated now. Children are protected by themselves, and I don't see any reason a spouse should be protected from their own bad decisions (like giving up working for an unstable marriage).

I've had arguments with people about forcing religious authorities to recognize homosexual marriage, which violates their right to practice religion. A civil clerk has no such right as a precondition of their profession, which is usually a part of the oath they give on receiving office. Sorry homosexuals, but if your religious denomination does not recognize your union, then you need to pick a new religion. Sorry, government employees, but you cannot enforce religious strictures on the local populace.

Back to the debate, it appears that Trump did not get a big bump from it, while the other candidates are catching up. I can only hope that his tide has ebbed, although I don't think it is the end of his candidacy. It's likely that the democrats will now win, because Trump will Ross Perot this election.

No one is saying they can't run... we're saying we will not support them. Talk about someone that would be "unelectable".

This is just another distraction created by Democrats to keep people arguing over what Republicans say instead of talking about Hillary's emails. It's really a nothing burger. It's hilarious that we would absolutely not ever vote for someone, but we can't ever say in public we would not vote for them? This is stupidity at it's highest level, and the exact reason Donald Trump is getting so much support. People are sick of this politically correct, can't say a thing that could possibly offend anyone, bullshit.

Never said you can't be against him (or her), never said you can't publicize your disapproval nor that you wish to join up with likeminded people. Just wondering while you feel the need to have a clear church<=>state devide you would mind a possible muslim running the show but not a christian.
