The Race for the Republican Nomination

It's time to change things up from debate discussion to actual election results.

The Republican Iowa Caucus has now been decided. Ted Cruz won a very tight race.

Ted Cruz - 28%

Donald Trump - 24%

Marco Rubio - 23%

Ben Carson - 9%

Rand Paul - 5%

Jeb Bush - 3%

John Kasich - 2%

Carly Fiorina - 2%

Mike Huckabee - 2%

Chris Christie - 2%

Rick Santorum - 1%

Jim Gilmore - <1%

The big surprise was Marco Rubio with late deciders. I believe we will see many drop out. Gilmore, Santorum, Huckabee, Fiorina, and Carson should be soon suspending their campaigns. If they can't win in Iowa, they have no chance to win anywhere. The big question will be... Where will their support go? :)

Oh, so you are one of those. Some people believe that just because they appear, they can take whatever they want no matter who was there before you, just because you have more power. Oh, I know what that sounds like. It sounds like a bully, or a thief. That just because they want something, and they have the means to take it away from others, they take it. I'm guessing that you are against Native Americans and their true claim to the land that they rightfully own.    And by someone coming in and creating laws to govern the dirt, you mean coming to an already established society and removing anyone who is in power because their way of living is "inferior to yours". You sound just like the European kingdoms coming to America. And who said there weren't laws govering the use of that "dirt". Maybe there were no laws as we know them now, but there were surely rules and norms to be followed. The laws were not necessary because the greed of people wasn't known to them in a scale as large as that of the colonizing kingdoms, or like the USA has showed in current times.

I am merely showing you the difference of what you believe, and what is reality. The huge mistake that Socialists make is they believe that life is fair... that's the stupidest thing anyone can ever think, and why you guys are all so miserable.

Wasn't it your famed president Lincoln that once mentioned something about a government of the people, by the people, for the people? That sounds oddly socialist doesn't it? Wasn't he a member of the Republican Party? Because it sure seems that the actual Republican party doesn't believe in a government of the people, by the people and for the people. It looks more like a government of the wealthy, by the wealthy and for the wealthy. And those wealthy persons are only 1% of the population of the country. Doesn't the US intervene in foreign countries to end a dictatorship or a "terrible leader"? Maybe they should look inwards first and take a look at exactly what kind of people they have running a national party.

No... it sounds oddly like a Republic.

This is a big day. The election results tonight could very well change the course of history.

Firstly, if European Socialist is an insult, why are you throwing it around? I thought this was supposed to be a civilised discussion.

It really comes down to the blurry line between being civilized, and being honest. I try to be honestly civilized. If your a Socialist... you are not offended by it. If you are offended by it, and you are in favor of government controlled, cradle to grave entitlements... then your just a liar. You may believe you are some kind of Robin Hood hero, out for the little guy, and the guardian angel of the less fortunate, but in reality you are a Socialist, an underachiever, a mooch, a thief... someone who believes they are entitled to free living just because they breathe air. I am a Conservative Capitalist... and I have been called much worse. Just being honestly civilized.

Well if you're a capitalist, why are you pissed about jobs going outside? As capitalists, corporations are going to utilize the factors of production in the most efficient way and they find that someone else is willing to provide same level of quality and quantity at fraction of the costs, probably much better qualified too. What's all the fuss about that?

There is no such thing as fair trade between one country that has labor laws, minimum wage requirements, Unions, and an ever increasing demand for higher income... and a Communist country that has enslaved their population for the sole purpose of killing the economy of the other. The United States no longer makes anything anymore. We are largely a service nation now... selling and maintaining products that we ourselves purchase, that are made elsewhere. We get our cheap stuff... but everyone is using their welfare checks and credit cards to buy them... this must change.

Ok, so, youre saying a semi socialist country is whipping the capitalist country. That kinda negates your point. The Communist country you talk of has created the single biggest economic miracle of our lifetimes by pulling hundreds of millions out of poverty into middle class, meanwhile, something opposite is happening in USA.

How do you feel about a president that consistently forces executive order after executive order on the people completely circumventing the democratic process? Is that a government that is "of the people, by the people and for the people"?

I truly hope for the sake of the entire world that trump doesn't get elected. A man who once looked at a homeless person and said "He has eight billion dollars more than me", gone bankrupt, sues everyone he can think to sue. And thinks an entire religious group should be outlawed. Take that particular comment, ban all muslims, replace it with Jewish, remind you of someone? In my opinion anyone who votes for, or supports trump is willingly ignorant.

Okay, I'm gonna get unusually personal with this one. You don't know what I do for a living do you? I'll tell you... I help people recover from Chapter 7 bankruptcy. Chapter 7 is a personal bankruptcy that essentially screws over all your creditors. Anyone who ever believed in your word to pay them back for what they lend to you... get's nothing. It is 100% legal, and about 200 people file for Chapter 7 every week in Las Vegas alone. Donald Trump has never filed a Chapter 7 bankruptcy in his entire life.

Donald Trump owns over 500 separate business', all under the same flag. He has filed a "corporate" bankruptcy on 4 of those... it really should be stressed as "only" 4 times. This is an amazing record of success, and everything was done according to the law. Yes, the laws apply to Donald Trump too. We live in a litigation society, and you somehow believe that Donald Trump is not entitled to participate in that litigation society... just because you don't like him?

You have things a little switched with the Muslim-Jewish issue. Adolf Hitler exterminated over 6 million Jews. It's the Muslims that want to exterminate the Jews this time... not Donald Trump. They keep killing us because we are the ones preventing the Jews from being massacred by Muslims. If you wish to ignore the problem and pretend it doesn't exist... the ignorant one is you.

So I was doing a bit of maths and it seems that 1074 delegates have been contested for out of 2472. And that means that 1398 are still up for grabs.

The Donald needs 764 to clinch the nomination but it seems very unlikely judging by his record. I mean I'm thinking that out of 1398, the max he can win are 600 and Cruz will get 500 so Trump will still be well short of 1237 and Either Rubio or Cruz will win the nomination. Thoughts?

Things are changing from proportional delegate awards to winner take all. Donald Trump will get the needed delegates unless they start keeping him from winning. I don't see that happening yet.

Hmmm. This is a new and interesting set-up. What if Trump loses Ohio tonight? He and Kasich are basically tied. That'll surely cause some problems going ahead.

When Kasich wins Ohio, he will be awarded all 66 delegates.

When Trump wins Florida, he will be awarded 99 delegates. When Trump wins Illinois, he will be awarded 69 delegates, probably. When Trump wins Missouri, he will be awarded 52 delegates, probably. When Trump wins North Carolina, he'll win a bunch more of the 72, but that state is proportional. Trump already won 9 today from the Northern Mariana Islands caucus... a U.S. Territory.

There is no possible way for Kasich to be tied with Trump... or anyone else, unless something crazy happens.

Edit: Many people believe Cruz will beat Trump in Missouri... we shall see.

Not all muslims want that, not even the majority of muslims want that. It's the zealots, something of which virtually every religion has. We aren't in charge of the Muslims in other countries, but we shouldn't turn them away because of the color of their skin or their creed or religion. This is America, melting pot ringing any bells? And the litigation, it's frivolous. He sued a book writer for 5 billion dollars for "Understating his wealth" (Donald's wealth, not the book writer).

I'll go ahead and concede on the bankruptcy point.

Lysistrata, this guy is old school. I like that. Maybe Donald Trump wouldn't be the worst thing in the world, better to have an overly-strong leader than a overly-weak leader. He starts infringing on people's rights however, that might be an issue.

I'm not convinced that they all don't want that, and the burden of proof is on them. It is the only modern "religion" that I know of that supports the slaughter of anyone that doesn't believe in it, and it's not up to us to tolerate or delineate the issue.

We aren't in charge of the Muslims in other countries, but we shouldn't turn them away because of the color of their skin or their creed or religion.

This whole sentence is crap. Say this to any of the families of their victims, or to anyone that radical Islamic terrorism is something they take very serious, and I mean in all countries. Say that we just can't do anything about it, and it's all about the "color of their skin". Please say it's a religion, they have the "right", and we just have to make the best of it. I won't say the rest... I like it here too much.

"Melting Pot" has always meant "assimilating"... I don't see much of that anymore. He never said "the majority", and he has only talked about those that come into the country illegally. Do you believe there are "illegal" immigrants here? Just curious.

I totally agree with you. Donald Trump can say all the unconstitutional things he wants... I admire his courage, but he would run into trouble actually doing them. Democrats always talk about things that are unconstitutional, but no one comes out declaring it disqualifies them from running for office. Republicans actually know what the 1st Amendment means.

Let's not overly trivialize the issue though. While it is true that all religions have zealots, Islam seems to have more of them. As for Muslims hating the West, it's best to turn to polling data from the Pew Research Center. As the study itself concludes:

When asked whether they associate a series of four positive and six negative traits with people in Western countries, majorities or pluralities among nearly every Muslim public surveyed say Westerners are violent, greedy, fanatical, selfish, immoral and arrogant; far fewer associate positive traits such as generosity, honesty, tolerance and respect toward women with people in Western countries.

So much for Muslims not hating the west

Yes, Muslims have more zealots, but the biggest problem with that, in my opinion, is education. The more educated a populous is, the less violent it's people will be. Women in Muslim dominated countries have trouble even attending classes, and the people joining up with ISIS and the like probably aren't regularly attending any type of class except the good old "Pull this and it shoots" class. If we really wanted to end terrorism, improving and protecting schools in Muslim dominated areas would be the best way.

Education is certainly part of the issue, but it is more complex than that. Iran for example has a very good education system, but as a regime itself is still an aggressive and authoritarian theocracy.

Women in Muslim dominated countries have trouble even attending classes, and the people joining up with ISIS and the like probably aren't regularly attending any type of class except the good old "Pull this and it shoots" class.

The first part is true for some countries, but I disagree with the second half. Thousands of European-born muslims with a solid educational backrgound have gone to Syria and Iraq to fight for ISIS.

If we really wanted to end terrorism, improving and protecting schools in Muslim dominated areas would be the best way.

Only if we strictly ban faith schools as an alternative to a secular education. In addition, mosques and Quran schools should be put under strict surveillance to catch early signs of radicalization.

Yes it's profiling. Deal with it.

1. That is completely asinine, both Christianity and Islam have verses dedicated (Deut 17 verses 2 - 5) (chapter 9 verse 5) to killing of other religions. There are fanatics in each, Islam, I admit, more so than any form of Christendom, but the majority of Islam, like the majority of Christianity, do not believe in such killings, both books later clarifying it as a bad thing. Quran, 109 1 - 6 specifically states "Say: O you disbelievers,. I worship not what you worship, Nor do you worship Whom I worship, Neither shall I worship what you worship, Nor will you worship Whom I worship, To you be your religion, and to me my religion." . Any fanatics are simply misinterpreting what has been given to them.

2. I'm not saying we should let people we know to be Islamic Radicalists in, but what ever happened to "Innocent until proven guilty"

3. That's not what melting pot has ever meant. The melting pot metaphor means that many different cultures, religions, creeds, live together in one place.

This is not true. Democrats are liberal because Progressives and Socialists found a home in the Democrat Party.

Rubio has dropped out. Ted Cruz unexpectedly leading in Missouri exit polls.

So much for Muslims not hating the wes

Well did the Pew guys survey all 1.6 billion Muslims? It's a sample and pretty bad one at that.

And mostly Pakistanis hate US administration, not people.

Usually when one doesn't like the outcome of a poll, the most convenient thing to say is that the sample was bad, or that it's just a poll, and not everyone was asked. True, but polls never claim to speak for everyone, they only serve as indicators by which one can make an educated guess.

The point is when Gallup finds that 7% of Muslims believe that the 9/11 attacks were completely justified, that gives you the rough estimate that it's almost 1 out of every 10 or around 112,000,000 of that 1.6 bil. Even if the polls are off, and it's actually 60mil less, it's still telling.

I do know that, I just find it interesting that many Republicans say that this is Lincoln's party and they have to follow their example and things like that. If I'm not mistaken, I heard Mitt Romney say something about it. If I find it, I'll post it here.

I was never a fan of the polls. Never a fan of generalization or sweeping statements for that matter.

So Trump won Illinois but Google live update is saying that he'll only get 24 delegates of the 69. Wasn't Illinois winner take all?
