December 4, 20169 yr comment_889740 The thing is you should be concerned about it because it does impact you. An appropriate minimum wage helps the economy more than it hurts it. Especially when you consider that there are not enough jobs above minimum wage to employee everyone if they were all capable of going into those higher brackets. However let me tell you a story about someone who did what you said. I had a friend who worked as a manager for a mill for a couple years after graduating college with a business degree. He still owed $30,000 and the interest rate wasn't favorable. During the housing crash the mill closed down. He lost his job, house, and a car that was nearly paid off all because the only jobs he could get were minimum wage. This guy didn't drink, do drugs, party, have kids or even spend in excess. However working 70 hours a week he was unable to keep anything except for the debt of course. A situation like this is why Capitalism without regulation can be more evil than any other. Let me tell you a story... this isn't a friend... why is it always a friend? This is me... My wife and I bought a three story, beautiful house, in 2006, peak of the market, in Las Vegas... if you paid attention to where the hardest hit locations were, it was Las Vegas. $650,000 price tag... $200,000 down. Fixed rate mortgage for 5 years. So we had to refinance by 2011. By 2009, it was worth $250,000... I don't really have to tell you how pissed off I was. I contacted Bank of America one time, and I told them this would be the only time I would contact them. I told them to do something about it, or they can take the keys. They refused to do anything... so we handed it to the bank. I loved that house... we lost 200 grand plus 3 years of serious mortgage payments. We didn't blame anyone but ourselves. No one held a gun to our heads, and made us sign the loan docs. We didn't cry about the system, blame the President, or demand the destruction of the economy to make us feel better. Everyone was in the same boat. You let go of it, and move on. Your friend excepted the responsibility of his loans. He took the chance, just like millions of everybody else. He gambled and lost, just like we did. You fall back, gain control, and get strong again. No one starts a business to employ people. This is the one thing that liberals believe that makes my head explode. Walmart does not exist to employ people... Walmart exists to make money. They hire people to help them make money. If people don't like how much they pay, they need to get another job. If they can't get another job, it would be best to be grateful for the one they have until they can do something about it. It's not Walmart's responsibility to make sure they are paying people enough to cover all their expenses. We are responsible for our debts. It's all our own responsibility. The government cannot hold everyone's hand through life. Report
December 4, 20169 yr comment_889749 And you wonder why people think you are a Libertarian? You are so staunchy against perceived government overreach (flowing into conspiracy "nanny-state" mentality) that you want no government what so ever interfering with "society". Yes coorperations want to make money, and just money. That is Capitalism 101. Funnely enough every civil breakthruw and all of societies evolutions have let AWAY from "might/money makes right" which is the very basis of Capitalism. Capitalism is a very VERY big no-no in society building, it is however brilliant at economical development. Report

The government cannot hold everyone's hand through life. The thing is that is bull crap what happened to you and you should be in a similar frame of mind as me. I imagine you didn't have 30k debt following you that you couldn't ditch with bankruptcy(student debt) as well? I am all for being responsible for debt, yet the people who caused that crash did not take responsibility and got away with it. Is that how our beloved Capitalism is supposed to be, that it is okay that they can do something like that because they grew up in wealth or because they screwed enough people to get to the top? If I were rich I would want everyone around me to be doing okay. I would like to not have to worry about my friends or family because we are better than letting someone work themselves to death only to still not make it. Report
December 5, 20169 yr comment_889774 I am all for being responsible for debt, yet the people who caused that crash did not take responsibility and got away with it. Like burglars in broad daylight. Bailed out by the taxpayers, and they were supposed to help people keep their homes. They let out a big sigh of relief... said to each other that they "dodged a bullet on that one"... payed each other off... banked the cash... and left us to die. I know exactly what you mean, and I was against the bailout too. They should have fried along with us, but they didn't. Student loans are a trap to keep the over-bloated Department of Education afloat... they should die too. Report

December 5, 20169 yr comment_889839 All I can say is wow... funny we should be talking about this stuff, but look what's coming in Seattle where they have been raising minimum wage to the stratosphere. They are going for grocery stores next.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NrmMk1Myrxchttp://www.seattletimes.com/business/amazon/amazoncom-unveils-self-driving-brick-and-mortar-convenience-store/Now Amazon is building convenience stores that you just walk in, grab what you need, and walk out. Soon all cashiers will be out of work, all 3.5 million of them. Welcome to our future. Report
December 5, 20169 yr comment_889841 Hey look, Capitalism 101 about making profit! wonder how that supercomputer behaves to shoplifters >_> EDIT: So I guess you want to keep wages artificial low on some kind of punishment? Otherwise how you gonna stop coorperations continuing with technological revolutions? Offcourse heavy socialized plans are needed to keep the underpaid workforce alive to continue employing them. Perhaps we should make designated facilities where such people are placed, so not to offend us normal wage slaves. Report

Those machines will require more technicians to keep them operating which leads to some of those being reemployed for that. It's no different than adding machines to assembly lines. Eventually some stores will win custom on the basis of providing a human interaction at the end of your shop and those of us who don't want to wait or exchange soul crushing glances with some slightly smelly elderly person or overweight teen at the checkout don't have to. There are many jobs which employed large numbers of people that have been wiped for ever, but that's progress... and new jobs get made. As they say, the best schools teach kids to work in jobs that don't even exist yet. Report

The net total of jobs will be less, not right away of course but eventually it will get to the point where it will be exceedingly difficult to find a profession. Many smart people have tossed around the idea of a base income just for being alive and such, but that wouldn't help people who need to work to have fulfillment in their lives. Quite a few people are hoping it we to a startrek level of society. Everything is free, people work because they enjoy it and there is more traveling and exploration and doing things for the benefit of mankind. A silly notion but it is a possibility. Report

Everything is free, people work because they enjoy it and there is more traveling and exploration and doing things for the benefit of mankind. A silly notion but it is a possibility. Not just a silly notion... just like the show... it's total fantasy. Don't get me wrong... I've been a Trekkie since 1966 when I was laying on the floor in my pajamas, watching Star Trek on one of the only color TV's on my block. Do you really believe Captain Kirk doesn't get something more than Uhura? The only benefit to being Captain is you get to tell everyone else what to do? Be the best at something and you get a medal from the Council for the Benefit of Mankind Society? Hardly. All Socialist ideas work wonderful on paper. Then a little thing called the human condition kicks in and blows it all apart. As long as you have over-achievers and deadbeats, that fantasy world cannot exist... and Captain James T. Kirk was an over-achiever. Report

I think it was the first mouth to mouth interracial interaction on TV... and it was totally forced against their will by a God named Apollo. Heads exploded all over the universe... and I was wondering why, because I was 7 years old. Too funny. Report
