This takes crown for the largest mass shooting in US history...

(CNN) Thousands of country music fans ran for cover as a gunman fired on them from a hotel on the Las Vegas Strip -- a mass shooting that is now the deadliest in modern US history.

More than 50 people were killed Sunday night when a gunman fired hundreds of bullets into the crowd, police said.

Over 400 others were rushed to hospitals after the mass shooting and ensuing stampede at the outdoor Jason Aldean concert.


The gunman, 64-year-old Stephen Paddock, unleashed a hailstorm of bullets from the 32nd floor of the nearby Mandalay Bay hotel, Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Sheriff Joseph Lombardo said.


Personally I am grieved by this. Humanity is so full of hatred. Hope he gets what he deserves in the next life...until we can learn to love each other these things will never stop.

If anyone is concerned about me... rest easy. My family was not there. Two big reasons: I'm not big on country music, and I absolutely hate crowded festival shows. One of my daughters is coming into town next month with a bunch of her friends. Where are they staying when they come? ... Mandalay Bay. She's a little freaked out and worried they won't want to come now.

 

Didn't sleep much last night. I always knew something would happen here eventually. Too many crazy people out there. I'm happy the forums are back up, and I hope everyone is okay. I'll be back later.

As of right now we do not know how he obtained the guns.  Its illegal to own automatic weapons manufactured after 1986, so he either spent 10's of thousands on pre 1986 weapons, or he obtained the guns illegally.   im guessing he did the later, but I could be wrong. if that is the case then gun laws would have done nothing to prevent this.

Cousin had a wedding at the wedding chapel in Mandalay Bay. They were all staying there for the weekend and most my family was on the strip during the shooting. They were around some pyramid looking building (forgot what they called it) and thankfully all are fine.
A few were at the airport leaving when the gunshots started. From what I heard from my family that was there, First Responders and SWAT put themselves in some rough situations to make sure people were safe. My cousin, the bride, had a SWAT member escort her to a safe place (along with others). 

My uncle, whose a combat Marine, said the sound twisted his stomach and you could hear the gunshots all around Mandalay Bay, not just the concert. 

Really, its just a horrific scene in general.

I understand that this is no time for politics but if this is indeed the largest shooting incident in history then the government and especially the people need to wake up and realize that no freedom is worth this.

 

I simply ask the NRA to go to the relatives of the victims and tell them that their freedom to arms is/was more important than their loved one's freedom to live.

 

I also read that the shooter had 20 weapons in his room. I mean how what why whee could he have accumulated so much arms and no alarm/indicators were set off?

I dont want to make this into a political debate, as that would not be in good taste, but it is important to note that this has nothing to do with the NRA.  he was alledgedly using .223 and .308 caliber rounds from an ILLEGALLY modified ar-15 style rifle and ar-10. 

 

this man was a sick, twisted and psychopathic terrorist.  there is no other way to slice it.  Im sure we will find out more about him and his motives, but they def do not matter.   what matters is that hundreds of families have become shattered because of this demented terrorist.  this is  major tragedy.  I hope the families can somehow find a way to heal.

Wrong. If he was on the ground he would not have had 18 guns, thousands of rounds, and he would have been neutralized quickly by big burly country boys with biceps the size of tree trunks. This guy did his homework. He was on floor 32 of the Mandalay Bay. He checked in on Thursday, and had all that time to move in his arsenal, and set up his vantage point. He had broke out two windows on extreme sides of his very large room, and had devastating angles down to his target. His target was a sea of 30,000 heads all crammed together, and it was 500 yards away. He didn't even have to use the scopes on his illegally modified AR-15s, those of which alone would have landed him a lengthy jail sentence for just possessing one of them. He couldn't miss, and he had so much time to just unload, and reload... over and over again.

 

He had set up a camera outside his door and was able to see when the police closed in, so he could put one in his own head. I have heard from hard professionals that this was a completely unpreventable event. The girlfriend in Tokyo may shed some light on what went wrong with this guy. Someone had to have known that he had over 30 guns and explosives in his possession, as well as the mental capacity to commit mass murder. A good friend of mine is a Henderson Police Officer... when he gets back to me, I'll probably know more. This is the cost of freedom, and we just have to be more aware of those that wish to abuse it.

Once I heard about the attack I immediately thought of Lysistrata and his family. I am quite relieved to hear you are safe and were not present.

From what is coming out of the news outlets is that two of the weapons were an AR-15 and AR-10 illegally modified to fire fully automatic.

 

So what is even the point of passing more gun control laws? This guy clearly ignored the law by using tooling/parts to modify the lower receivers to accept a full auto sear, and then created his own full auto sear. I've said it before and I'll say it again. Taking away my right to protect myself will not stop crazy individuals from acquiring weaponry. Just look at the Pakistan Kyber weapon industry, Philippines black market gunsmiths, UK, Australia, Canadian, and South American homebuilt submachine guns. Everything from AKs, Glocks, Mac 10s, 1911s, to do it yourself full auto pistols.

 

Where there is a demand, someone will step in to reap the rewards of supplying a product. If I wanted to, I could buy a milling machine and begin manufacturing AK-47 and AR-15 receivers/parts. Isn't hard to do at all. What are you going to do to stop that, ban steel and aluminum? Fine, you find a way to destroy the US economy by banning steel and aluminum. Then I will make something more simple, I could use pipes, random scrap metal, and a file to build an open bolt Mac 10, Mac 11, or a Sten. It would be crude, but it would be fully functional and fully automatic.

 

Building firearms isn't rocket science folks. The media just wants you to think it is.

 

So back to the tragic event, anyone else notice how after the first round of gunshots, tons of people all dove to the ground. And yet, we see a handful of people, spread throughout the crowd who chose to ignore the gun shots and just stand there?

22 seconds in the next burst of gunfire goes off. Pop pop pop pop pop pop pop pop pop which continues for 13 seconds. And what do we see? Idiots standing up fully exposed, acting like they are 100% safe. 49 seconds in, gunfire goes off again. Pop pop pop pop pop pop pop, all the smart people get as low to the ground as possible, the camera pans and we see more people standing up, they are pointing , drinking, and randomly talking! Gunfire stops and starts again, once again, people are still standing. Some crouching while some decide to get up off the ground and stand.

 

I cannot stress this enough, if you hear gunshots, get as low as possible and assess the situation as best you can. You may have mere seconds to make the decision to run or fight. Don't be the person who freezes and gets the deer in the headlights look. I always advise people to keep their situational awareness up. I posted this once before, but I want to reiterate it.

 

The late John Cooper, a US Marine and firearms instructor, created what is known as the Color Code. The Color Code is made up of 4 Conditions, each representing a different level of readiness and state of mind.

 

Condition White: Unattentive and unaware of your immediate environment. Walking around staring at your phone, not looking up and around you, or in a distracted state of mind. People having to respond to a threat in Condition White tend to adopt a deer in a headlights look or scream and then attempt to run when it might already be too late. The worst thing you can do is see a deadly threat occur and stay put (or in some instances pull out your phone to film it. Don't do that. Get Out!)

Condition Yellow: Slightly heightened readiness. More observant of your surrounds and its occupants. Checking what is behind you from time to time. Occasionally scanning and looking people in the eye as they approach you. Observing possible exit routes is another positive. If a deadly threat occurs you will be less caught off guard, able to respond quicker, and be in a better state of mind to formulate the best possible course of action to keep you safe.

 

Condition Orange: High readiness and moderate alert. Something or someone seems very out of place. You have identified a possible deadly threat and you may be required to take imminent action. Begin determining whether Fight or Flight is more appropriate. Attempt to avoid the threat and move away from it. In Condition Orange it is easy for the untrained to adopt Tunnel Vision and only focus on the possible threat that is in front of them. Check your surroundings as what you see in front of you may be a distraction, and the real threat is coming from your sides or behind you. It could very well be harmless, but why take the chance. It doesn't cost you anything, its all brainpower after all.

Condition Red: Maximum readiness and high alert. If a threat occurs, you will not be caught off guard and will be able to respond efficiently. Avoiding the fight (on your own) is no longer an option (it is still up to the other individual if they choose to follow through with an attack). You are ready to fight, respond with adequate force necessary to neutralize the threat, and then deescalate the situation after the threat ceases. The most important aspect of Condition Red is always operate within the confines of the law, only use what is necessary to defend yourself, stop the threat, and then back away. Do not give chase, and do not keep escalating the incident when the aggressor has given up and is clearly deescalating the attack.

 

Condition Yellow is what everyone should always use anytime outside of your home. Unfortunately, taking a quick look around any public place will demonstrate 99% of people are stuck in Condition White, completely oblivious to their surroundings. I personally have only been at Condition Orange twice in my life. Once last year and once this year. I've noticed that in modern times, I find myself inadvertently coming into closer contact with undesirable individuals who choose to exhibit criminal behavior or act strangely aggressive in a rather threatening manner.

Thanks everyone... my city took a hit, like so many others have. Maybe those Raiders will change their minds and stay in California now after this brutal evidence that they are just not tough enough to hang with Nevada. I heard our Sheriff started a GoFundMe page for the families, and it's already raking in millions to help them through the hard times ahead. We can't forget about Puerto Rico, Texas, and Florida either... too much damage all over. I'll be meeting with some friends when we find out who was effected by this, and we'll come up with several ways to get their lives as close to happy as possible. It's a hard life wherever you go.

When you read the news, you take a step back and think this is horrible. When I saw some footage of people standing there and hearing the automatic gunshots, it puts everything in such a different light. It was horrifying to say the least. You hear and see people dropping to the floor and you have nowhere to run for safety. I've seen some heavy shit with the truck going into the crowd in Nice and other things that have happened in the near past, but this was tops it all. Can't imagine being there, witnessing that all live. Horrifying is the only word to describe what happened.

Yes he was prepared and ready. More then likely even did prior "training" and drills to get him ready for what can only be described as far to many seconds of complete carnage.

 

I was merely pointing out that distance, which I stated I am bad at for gauging, must have worked in favor of the many gunshot victims (unknown ratio of gunshot vs panic induced wounded) also inflicted. I have been made aware that Nevade is a open carry, semi automatic A-OK state. As such I would question his inability to carry around his AR-15/AR-10 guns on the site itself (which to chime in with the "political" side of this, seems to be a gun-of-war, not self defence nor sport/hunting) and be able to make alot of casualities by being able to "spray" the crowd on ground level and much closer proximity.

 

Also stop thinking for a moment he would have been "dealt" with by people on the ground in that situation. He would have both gotten the closest easely and the persons with distance (and by then under cover) would be shooting into a mass of people (as you stated, 30k!) which you can't just evac out of harms way either during a shooting or a shoot-out.
