Nice, we've got a full roster at least having said something today! Lyner's immediately staking a side in the no lynch debate too, but at least that moves the conversation along and isn't inactive anymore.

Unvote

So now we get down to the meat of it - do we go with the mindset that a day 1 lynch is a crapshoot and thus we'd better wait until night roles have had a chance to do SOMETHING that can lower our risk of a mis-lynch, or do we go with the mindset that as a whole we've only got one way to really 'test' people - i.e. by lynching and then seeing who drove the wagon, thus we need to force people to take sides to start building records.

The main thing I dislike about the no-lynch side of the argument is that it urges people to shut down all conversation or similar and just skip the rest of day 1. We need to get people talking and offering opinions/taking sides now that everyone's here.

Agreed. Also, this community is way too reliant on PRs. Any time we've had games that aren't role madness setups, especially if they don't know that it's more mountainous, the town usually gets wiped out because they do what we're doing now: sit and wait for PRs to do something and then have no idea what to do or who to lynch towards the end game when they don't have much to go on, and usually end up just getting run by the scum team who can coordinate at least at night, if not throughout the day too. Maybe we'll get lucky and this will be a role madness game where town roles have good games, but I think it's not smart to bank on that happening.

Also, on that note. @TW: can you confirm if mafia has day talk or not?

I believe we're at four votes for No Lynch – KevinH, Zacch, Lyner, Darkfox – so it'll take an unvote from one of them and more votes for another player to change the lynch. For the people suggesting we do just do an lollynch, do you have anyone in mind?

Generally inactives are good, safe candidates since we can't expect them to do a whole lot to help us in the late game anyway. I also think that there's something to be said for going off of a gut read of people, even this early, since it sometimes works, and even when it doesn't, it's interesting to see who bought in to help get an innocent lynched and who stayed out.

Haha actually that's very fair. In this case I am town and was just hoping that TW would be nice and throw us a bone since we have no idea about much of anything to do with the setup, and I wasn't sure if he would provide details if asked, but you're right that asking questions that town wouldn't know but scum would is something that people do to look town sometimes.

Also, my early read is that brewers is probably not mafia (he might be 3rd party scum, those are always hard to read because they usually play like town during the day). IIRC his early game scum strategy is generally to either spam and not actively scum hunt so he can decide who to frame later in the game, or to bus his partner super early and earn townie points. He basically never makes early game reads and pushes for a lynch off of it like this though, and since I am definitely not scum at all, my gut says that he's either town or third party.

To lynch or not to lynch, that is the question.

The arguments I'm seeing are as follows:

1. We don't know if there is a mechanic that would make not lynching someone on the first night a bad choice. But the counter argument to that is we don't know if there IS a mechanic that would make lynching someone on the first night a bad choice.

2. If we don't lynch anyone, it makes the conversation dead. But the counter argument to that is: What useable information do you get out of randomly picking someone to lynch?

3. Not lynching someone would extend the overall game length, which is a concern with inactivity. But the counter argument to that is: If someone goes inactive, then they will be lynched.

Are there anymore arguments for or against lynching someone on night one?

Since you asked ...

Rule of thumb is that 1/4 of players are scum.
So that's 3 or 4 scum in this game, meaning 10 or 11 townies.
Even at deadline it would take 4 townies to lynch a scum and resist influence from the scum to lynch somebody else.

A day 1 lynch almost always takes out a townie.

This is very fair on both sides, and why I am more open to no lynching when the setup is known and it makes sense.

2. If we don't lynch anyone, it makes the conversation dead. But the counter argument to that is: What useable information do you get out of randomly picking someone to lynch?

It can't be completely random because the mafia know who is mafia and who isn't, so despite their best efforts to mask it, they have to have some reason for being willing to lynch someone, especially if they're townie. Everyone else ideally has some sort of reason that you can push them on, even if it's something dumb like being completely random.

3. Not lynching someone would extend the overall game length, which is a concern with inactivity. But the counter argument to that is: If someone goes inactive, then they will be lynched.

Inactive people completely kill games at the end because town can't risk lynching someone just because they're inactive anymore, but they also obviously aren't contributing to finding scum. Once it gets far enough it's basically a guaranteed scum win because there will be more active mafia than there are active townies, so they can just pick apart one active player and there's basically nothing town can do about it.

I think "almost always" is probably not accurate, especially in role madness games where mafia is not the only scum faction like this one could be. I can think of at least a few games since I've been here that some scum player has been lynched on day one. It's obviously mostly luck but it can happen.
