Horrible horrendous hideous Housemates
We all here horrible stories about housemates. I have had more than my fair share, yet I still here many many more "wtf" stories that make me sometimes (rarely) feel that I have been lucky. They are a feature of university and young adult life. SO here are a few of my stories. Names, dates and places are left out. I would ask you all do the same when sharing your stories. Living in a flat of six people in university accommodation, there was one girl who was not so much actually bad as just incapable of considering when she might be about to do something that would be really annoying. Three incidents stick in the mind from this person, all about level 2 or the 1-5 level of annoyance. The first concerned the glass that builds up in any kitchen. Any student kitchen will develop a lot of bottles and jars. To get rid of these they had to be carried down 3 flights of stairs and thrown into the glass bin just outside the door. A very minimal amount of effort. I generally carried about 4 items down everytime I left for class in the morning. Then it occured to me that I was producing none of the glass, and there was no way it could maintain that level of buildup if anyone else was taking their glass out. So I stopped. And as you might expect, a cleaner told the flat we would be fined if they were not taken out. And guess who is the one to give us all the lecture about how we should clean up after ourselves? Miss never takes the glass out. The second incident concerned as most stories do, cleaning. Under university policy there was never a vacuum cleaner left in the corridor. It had to be requested from a cleaner at the start of the day and it would be left out and then locked away that night. I wanted to clean my room (I think i had dropped something and it had spilt) but was due in class before the cleaner would arrive the next morning, so asked if someone could ask the cleaner for me. When I return from class the vaccum is in the hall ready to be used. I go to take it into my room and this girl runs up and says that SHE asked for it and she wanted to clean her room. Being not too rushed I let her take it away. And wait. After half an hour, no sound of vaccuming has emerged from her room, so I go and ask if I can use it because it only took 2-3 minutes to vaccum our rooms (they were tiny). I see that when she asked for the vaccum it was not because she wanted to use it, it was because apparently tidying the floor and making the bed can only be done with it in the room, and she still had, at a conservative estimate, 3 1/4 million tons of crap to move before she could actually use it. However, apparently I was being ridiculous in asking if I could use the vaccum for three minutes. The final incident is more of being careless towards friends rather than housemates, but I'll still stick it in. For her birthday she asked everyone to buy tickets and go with her to one of the Universities club nights. They had a policy that if it was your birthday you could go for free in that week, so she didn't have to pay. The tickets where about £3 each, and about 15 people agreed to go. On the night she was suddenly "tired" and refused to go and wanted everyone to stay in. The next day she went on a sports trip and stayed out until 3am, apparently oblivious that she had just asked for and then snubbed a £45 gift. (total cost of wasted tickets). Second person shall be nicknamed useless lard arse. I have had a great many very bad experiences with him and he was a foul and nasty person. But a few funny things came out of it. Not least when fed up with constant slow internet from his streaming we blocked porn on the router and it took less than 10 minutes for him to be shouting. To give an indication of what he was like, on top of the usual not paying bills, using others food and equipment and not cleaning, he once screamed at us for being loud at 11:25am. The Night before he had slammed through the front door at 5am. Two weeks before, when he knew I was quite seriously ill he had done the same thing. He also accused me of being patronising two seconds after telling me I knew nothing about life. (brought on because I pointed out to him that it was a fact of life people get pissed of when they are owed over £100 in bills for 2 months without apology). I still have very fond memories of his total flip out (banging on walls, trying to get into the room) when he realised I was hooking up with the girl he had desperately hit on and bad mouthed me to. And the time my female housemate beat him in a downing race 5 times in a row when he tried to prove his manliness. There are many others who I may right about later. I just want some other people to share stories so I know I am not alone in dealing with this ****.

Tbh, I Really do not know why people eat so much meat. I just bought two weeks of food and didn't realise until I was done there was no meal with meat in it. This conversation reminds me of an incident with someone in my first year of uni. I was preparing some venison (deer) and she had a massive go at me for being so cruel as to eat deer. As she was having this go at me she was taking cheap chicken (aka battery farmed) out of the fridge. Kind of pissed me off a lot that one.

Game is hung for quite a long time before being eaten. So the blood will drain out. As for chicken in Europe, its probably as bad if not worse than the USA. We have banned battery farming so all chickens are barn reared. This does nothing to reduce the number of chicken per square foot. In fact you can tell the condition of our chickens by the fact that many have burns on the backs of their legs which can be seen when they are on display in the supermarket.n This is a sign that they have fallen over and sat on the floor for a while (which shouldn't happen to a healthy bird) as the floor is covered in an alkaline substance to kill germs.

For the record, no meat is served with the blood still flowing. All it is is water that has been dyed red by the resisdue in the meat. Given the way animals are slaughtered, and then hung up after slaughter, it would be pretty much impossible for there to be remaining blood.

Guess the city
This is a fairly old game. I'm sure most have seen it before. A picture is posted, and you must guess which city it is of. Then the winner posts another picture (after confirmation by the original postor) and so on. So lets get this started. http://i1151.photobucket.com/albums/o628/scorpion4168/IMG_2102.jpg

I cannot imagine chicken tasting too good. I know we cook it to protect against samonella, but it just feels icky. I can handle most meats raw, but chicken is just urrrrgh.

Because there is nothing happening in the real world right now. Seriously. I have to prepare a quick fire debate for Monday and there is nothing.

No It is plain strait forward Bacon, sometimes referred to as back bacon. It is from the the same part of the pig as a pork chop (in fact it is essentially a thin sliced chop) rather than the belly of the pig. It has much less fat so doesn't just turn to water when cooked.

I have had beef bacon in Islamic countries. Bacon actually doesn't come from most pigs. You have to make them especially overweight in order to get them to produce bacon. I would also like to state that none of the pictures above are of bacon. They are of the nasty fatty fake so called "streaky" bacon. This is true bacon http://www.yorkesofdundee.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/dry-cured-back-bacon.jpg

First topic :D
In terms of the Libyan incident, I do wonder what the administration was supposed to do. The USA, France and the UK have some tentative allies in Libya and Egypt rather than people who are on our side just for the money. How that pans out in the long run is yet to be seen, but there is one thing certain. It won't take very much to get rid of them. Appearing to back the film makers would probably do it. You have to bear in mind that this was an extremist militia. The Obama administration held out a hand of apology. And now the militia has been driven from the city. Had the Obama administration held out a fist instead, that might not have happened. It could have cost the goodwill that the USA has just earned. The fact is the administration is also entirely right. The film makers are in the wrong. I know that in the USA there are constitutional rights to say what you want. However, that should never be taken to mean that you have the moral right to say what you want. And that is the message that I saw coming out of the US, and it is quite correct. As for Romney and the republicans, what concerns me is that the last 11 years has taught them nothing. Romney said he wanted to apply pressure to Palestine to get them to effectively surrender. That just shows that he still does not understand the basic principles of modern warfare, despite the act that the USA has been at war for the last three presidential terms. The basic fact is this. And this has been seen in Iraq, Afghanistan and Palestine. If you have little to live for, you will die very willingly. Half of Gaza's population are under 18. You tell them that they have to accept their lot in life, the Israeli cordons. Tell them that they will need Israel for everything, that they cannot farm, they cannot fish. And tell them that if they want peace they have to accept it on those conditions. Do you really expect anything but unending war? If your life is a life of squalor, no education, no job, no space, going out in a blaze of glory suddently sounds attractive. For this reason the only way to subdue Gaza by military strength is to open up with the artillery, and then send the bulldozers in and not stop until the entire population has been driven into the sea. Otherwise, you have to reach a peaceful solution that at least offers them a future. And if you demand that they give in to force of arms, you are unlikely to find that solution (especially as that threat implies that he thinks Palestine has no claim to a better life). The depressing thing is that this is how Iraq was fought, and how Afghanistan is lost. Iraq was not won by force of arms. It was won by making peace with the militia's. It was a political victory that ended 8 years of blood and misery. In Afghanistan the coalition struggles because it cannot offer anything different. They brought fire to the opium plants that were the only source of income. They offer no peace and only war. And in that backdrop, the Taliban, who are effectively the armed wing of the Pashtun people appeal to the Pashtuni villagers, as they have always had a horrible life and a corrupt Kabal offers them nothing else. You cannot subjucate such a people without killing every last one of them, so again a political solution has to be found. And yet the Republicans seem not to have noticed this and just want more war. This is the same as happened in Vietnam. The US bascially offered more corruption and misery. And the Vietnemese were willing to fight because what they had under that was so bad.

Elected police commissioners
I think these are going to be a bad thing. But to answer the questions first. The elections take place in November. Candidate lists should come out in November when the nominations close. At the moment those candidates that there are have kept quite a low profile. As for why it is a bad thing, these people have a very different role to county sheriffs. To explain them I have to explain what currently happens. At the moment Police forces answer to the Home Secretary, a senior minister in the Cabinet. However their budgets are set by the Local Police Authorities, which are comprised of representatives of various local councils. The budget is funded by a mixture of central government grants and the local council tax. These Authorities have some variety depending on which part of the country they are in. In my current county the Local government structure consists entirely of the County Council, with subordinate district and city councils. In my home county, there is the county council with its subordinate district authorities, but the city councils are so called unitary authorities that are entirely divorced from the county council. However, the Police Authority covers two county councils, and two city councils, all independent of each other. This means that currently they are reconciling 5 different authorities funding (2 city, 2 county, and central government) to agree a budget. In the county I currently live in, they only have to reconcile County and central, so it is a bit simpler. The Police commissionor takes over the role of the Police Authority and the Home Secretary. The Chief constable has to answer to them, and they have to set the budget. They also have the power to dismiss the chief constable. However, they are not given the power to direct day to day operations of the police force, that power remains with the chief constable. They will be able to set directions for the police in the budget, and can influence to extent with the threat of a firing. However, they are bound by statutory duties so such decisions can be reviewed by the courts. Ultimately, these positions are a bad idea for the following reasons; -No one really cares. Low participation rates in elections will allow fringe candidates too much chance of getting in. I cannot even discover a candidate list for my county, and no one has told me how to register (major issue as I have just moved house). They are expecting 20% turnout in this county, and no-one high profile is considering running. In places were you can find lists it consists of former police officers, former chairs of police authorities, and fringe cranks. So there isn't really going to be a change for the better if change happens at all. -The job will be impossible without recreating the existing power structure. My home police force (Hampshire constabulary) will effectively need 4 councils to agree a budget with the Commissioner. What is the actual difference between that and the Police Authority that existed before? -What is popular locally isn't necessarily good for policing nationally. We already have a problem that the huge public demand for neighborhood policing (otherwise known as bobbies on the beat). This has led to an increase in neighborhood officers...at the expense of the response teams that are operating at 50% numbers. This is significant because the response teams (the ones who come running when someone calls for help) are the ones who can catch people red handed. Neighborhood officers may reassure people, but they don't help cutting crime. Now imagine when national policing priorities start taking a back seat to this. Counter terrorism, organised crime, serious fraud are all national problems but will not impact on local re-election priorities. There is no equivalent to the US FBI, this is all handled by co-operation between forces. It will not be a vote winner locally, but is vital nationally. Finally, on the cleaning up of forces, this is a non issue in most UK forces. People do trust the police and are not concerned by corruption. The only police force with an ongoing corruption scandle is the Metropolitan Police in London...ironically this is the only English Police force not included in the new reforms as the Mayor has held this equivalent role for the last ten years.

Socialism is horrible. Communism is much better. I mean, it still suffers from people, but as an idea it is much better than state control of everything.

Living in the UK, I am finding it concerning that there is substantially more coverage and awareness of the US November elections than there are of the upcoming Police Commisonor elections (a brand new never before elected position). In fact, it is a struggle to even find out who the candidates are, and I have certainly been unable to find out anything approaching an election manifesto.

Topic title says it all really. I live on the outskirts of town, a short walk/cycle from my university.
