  1. Don't you mean they have the freedom to operate competitively? No, everyone has the freedom to operate competitively from bupa in the UK to blue cross and blue shield association in the US. Here patients can wait ~6 months and receive the non urgent hip replacement, or pay and have it done in a couple of weeks (urgent hip ops are always done within a few days assuming patient it fit for surgery on the NHS) only for bupa a total hip replacement with inpatient stay and after care is $6580 (at current exchange) and the average replacement in the US is $41000 for the same service. Now, you tell me which of those is acting more competitively.
  2. Because the huge public system in Sweden forces the private system to operate competitively. They also only provide services which are typically low risk with high profit margins. We see it all the time in the UK, patients are happy to splash some cash to jump a queue - it's fine, it's their money - but no private service will take you if there's a chance they'll lose money on you. The private system simply cannot compete with a state system for cost effective health care delivery. If the UK or Sweden spent (per capita) half of what the US spends per capita on healthcare we'd be laughing. As it is your government already spends more on health than the UK government does (per capita) and achieves nearly bollocks all with it as it's sucked into the profit margins of your insurance companies. Fun story, which insurance policy do you think provides the best quality adjusted and disability adjusted life years in the US per $ spent?
  3. The bigger concerns are that warmer temperatures allow disease vectors to survive longer and potentially over winter further north. This could lead to Malaria entering north america and re-entering Europe, increasing lyme's disease, and a whole host of nasty ass shit like dengue, yellow fever, and west Nile virus just to name a few that we have names for...

  6. I'm assuming they've removed faith from the space one?
  7. The republican's created the "war on terror" and the "war on drugs" which have both gone so well for everyone. Republican policy distinctly indicates that some are more equal than others. An opinion which seems to be shared by one of their popular presidential nomination candidates.
  8. You're missing the point Sir. It doesn't matter how good, or how bad a President is. Obama has divided the country to extremes on every level possible. Whether it be rich vs. poor, black vs. white, women vs. men, immigrant vs. citizen, gay vs. straight, law enforcement vs. criminals, Muslim vs. Christian, public school vs. charter school, red vs. blue, Democrat vs. Republican... that's what he has done. Everyone is fighting over everything... and HE has done that. We can't get rid of this guy fast enough. Please, take him. I refer to Samus' answer Religious divides have always run deep in America. As for the rest of these, pre-existing inequalities have simply been highlighted, as they have been all over the world in the same period, and (as in many other parts of the world) the previously top dog party ie men, straight, white, rich, have become pissed off and sought to increase division.

  10. To be honest mate, for your politicians 42% isn't actually that bad.
  11. You can have Cameron and his entire Cabinet.

  15. Well I'll call Obama, John Kerry, the Pentagon, and notify the Joint Chiefs of Staff that we are surrendering our sovereignty back to our British superiors. The Federal Government owns what we allow them to own. They want a pencil?... they go to the House of Representatives to get it. The power the government has, is given to them by us. It's that whole "We The People" thing. If the Federal Government takes your land that has been with your family for a century, through imminent domain, and then decides they will charge you for being on it... well I think the people will be a little pissed. Stop judging us from your lofty British ivory tower. We have laws here, and we'll sort it out ourselves. I think we had to fight you guys twice to be able to say that. Yeah... I bet the Indians are pretty pissed.
  16. Didn't realise this was still alive...
  17. Wrong again, we have health insurance, paid for by us, through my wife's employer... although we pay far too much for it. You pay too much because the healthcare companies hold a monopoly and do not wish to be competitive as they know people will buy it anyway.
  18. Yet for some bizarre reason you mention any of this crap to the vast majority of "normal" people they assume you've been reading come kinda conspiracy theory.
  19. The day every country acts like America is the day the human species signs its own death warrant.
