Traitors on the Battlefront

Bombs exploding. Guns firing. The smells of dust, sweat, blood, and tears. This is wartime.

For some reason or another war has sprung up and all you & your squads have gotten called in to fight. The initial invasions and such went extremely well. However, recently you've been losing ground and men...and a lot of them. It seems that almost every time a squad can get into a good position, they get blown to bits or forced back. Attacks, counterattacks, feints, and flanking...none of it seems to work anymore.

And no one seems to be able to figure it out.

Worried that you have traitors in your midst, and separated from a lot of the higher ups, you decide it's time to take action into your own hands and find the traitors.

Rules

(Stolen from mole and edited to my liking)

1. This is game. Play to win; expect to lose. And have fun.

2. No editing or deleting posts.

3. No talking to other players outside the game thread unless your Role PM states specifically that you can.

4. No quoting any PMs from me, including Role PMs. Doing so will get you modkilled. Paraphrasing is OK. If you are worried about something not being ok, then either PM me or just dont say it.

5. Vote for a player to be lynched by using the Vote: Narsis format. You dont need to unvote before voting again, but it is appreciated(especially if you dont vote again right away).

6. Days will last 10 days. Nights will last up to 72 hours, but may be cut short if I get all actions in before then, with a minimum 24 hour night.

6-1. If discussion is lagging, I may impose a shorter deadline at my own discretion. Deadline extensions will happen on request - but will only happen once per day at most, and if I feel there's enough activity to warrant one.

7. A lynch requires a majority (50% rounded down + 1) vote. You can also No Lynch, by using Vote: No Lynch.

7-1. If there is no majority by deadline, only a half-majority is needed. (Majority / 2, rounded up if necessary)

7-2. If there are 2 players with the same amount of at least half-majority votes at deadline, then I will lynch the one who reached that number of votes first.

8. After someone has been lynched, discussion may continue until I can get to the thread and end the day. If you are dead you may continue to post until your death scene is posted. After that point I will only allow a Bah post, and only if you were night killed.

9. Don't use small / invisible font, don't use coloured text(except for mole who is allowed to use orange if he is acting as the super moderator of the forum), and don't use any form of clever encryption or code in your messages.

10. If you haven't posted in 2 days, I'll prod you. If you don't pick up that prod AND post within 48 hours, I'll replace you.

10-1. If you need to be replaced for whatever reason, please PM me, don't flake.

10-2. If you are V/LA, don't rely on me checking the thread / your signature. Please post in the thread notifying me of your V/LA or PM me about it.

10-3. If you replace out, you automatically lose. If you are someone replacing in, whether it counts as a win or loss depends on how long you have been replaced in for.

11. Vote counts will be made whenever I feel like it(or it is asked) and will be done in a separate post.

13. I hope it isn't necessary, but any modkills will negatively effect the rule-breaker's faction in some way which I see fit. If you are modkilled, you lose, no matter how the game ends.

14. I can change, add, or edit rules as I see fit. I will notify players in-thread if this happens.

15. I am not perfect. I may have got something wrong. I may have missed a rule out. Let me know, ask me questions, but don't abuse my mistakes.

15-1. To get my attention in-thread, use the MOD: <Your message> format. Or, y'know, you could PM me.

Special Rules

1. In this game you are fighting over a battlefield. The more posts you make in thread with applicable content(determined by me), the more your side advances against the opponent.

1-1. Double posts(or triple posts etc) will only count as a single post.

2. As such, this game does not have traditional win conditions. Each side wins when they move a predetermined amount of space across the battlefield. (and yes it is balanced and fair)

3. Mafia post counts will be multiplied by (# of townies) / (# of mafia).

4. Any third-party roles will not affect the # of posts for either town or mafia. However, it may play a part in their own powers(if they have any) or win condition.

4-1. Power roles(if there are any) may or may not be affected in a similar way by their post #.

5. The amount of ground controlled by each side will be updated at the start of every day. Note: post numbers will not be revealed, only the percentage of ground each side controls.

6. When a player dies, the amount of posts they were contributing to their side is removed.

7. Due to the inclusion of this mechanic, a side may win before, or after, where they normally would. (ie. mafia may still lose even if they have more then 50% of the remaining players)

8. If you have any questions regarding this mechanic, just ask. I may, or may not, answer it.

Mole summed up the case against him nicely and I'll respond to his question "would I really be so stupid to do such things?"

One word: WIFOM. I guess that's an acronym rather than a word but you get the point.

1. The point is well made despite it being an acronym. Heh.

2. In essence, you're quite right. However, I could consider the possibility a scum deliberately acting differently/"scummy" to invoke WIFOM and keep his name clear is, well, very remote.

The "End of Day 1" VC

No Lynch (6) - KevinH, Alasdair, molestargazer, ccabal86, Kasabian, ChaosHawk

molestargazer (3) - Nerau, CanucksDynasty, Martino

Alasdair (1) - Kaziocore

Out on the field, the soldiers were fighting bravely. In fact they were doing quite well. However, they were more or less unaware of the heated debate going on amongst the platoon leaders. At one point, they were a hair's breadth away from turning completely against molestargazer and his 7th Platoon, aka the "Lions". In the end though, the decision was made to wait for the traitors to act first, with the hopes of making a more informed decision.

And so they waited.

And night fell.

It's now Night 1. All actions in to me by September 15th.

  • Author

It was a surprisingly quiet night. A heavy blanket of fog covered the battlefield. Next to nothing could be heard or seen from either side. Only the low rumble of a plane broke the silence that night, but it passed far above and away from their position.

Suddenly, a cry went up and gunfire could be heard. But in the dark of night it was hard to tell exactly where it came from.

As dawn broke, the platoon leaders gathered for another day of debate. All of them showed up, and their was only one casualty from the commotion last night. Otherwise, everything was as it was the first day the search had begun.

It is now Day 2. Deadline is September 26th. With 10 alive, it takes 6 to lynch.

Edit: oh one thing...i have the post count at home so you are stuck waiting until i get home tonight for the battlefield update(it will only include up to this post, but i'll make a new post for everyone to see).

1st - I'm surprised that a no lynch happened. I'm looking at those who voted no-lynch on deadline as possible mafia suspects.

2nd - I'm more suprised that no-one died. I can only assume that a doc prevented a night-kill. Cuz the night description said "a cry and gunfire" could be heard. So congrats to the doc for protecting a townie.

I'll comment some more after I see the battlefield results.

so it seems we have a rareity no one is dead in day 2

don't see that very often

lets hope for the best that the results give us a good clue as to who the mafia is

So the Doc saved the day? Awesome now to see the results.

"I told you so" (in a good way this time)

Through end of Day 1:

3. CanucksDynasty - 7+1+7+4+2+3+8+4+3+6+4+0

9. Martino - 0+0+1+1+2+0+0+0+2+2+3+1

10. Kaziocore - 0+1+1+3+2+2+0+1+2+2+0+0

Totals:

49 CanucksDynasty

36 KevinH

26 molestargazer

19 Chaoshawk

16 ccabal86

14 Kaziocore

12 Martino

10 Nerau

9 Alasdair

8 Kasabian

Total post count = 199

Let

T = townie post count

M = mafia post count

T + M = 199

T / (T + M*7/3) = 60.5%

Solving:

T = 155.5

M = 43.5

Obviously, there can't be half posts so there are probably a few posts that weren't deemed worthy.

We'll work with the data that we have.

Simplified problem: Find 3 posters such that the sum of their posts = 43 or 44.

Hm... That means we have a mafia member in the top 3

Actually, it doesn't mean that.

It proves that CanucksDynasty and I are townies.

I can find 5 combinations that fit the criteria.

  • Molestargazer + Alasdair + Kasabian = 43
  • Molestargazer + Nerau + Kasabian = 44
  • Chaoshawk + Ccabal86 + Kasabian = 43
  • Chaoshawk + Ccabal86 + Alasdair = 44
  • Chaoshawk + Kaziocore + Nerau = 43

Interesting that Martino doesn't fit into any of them. Maybe he is proven townie, too.

Simplified problem: Find 3 posters such that the sum of their posts = 43 or 44.

Which means it's pretty ambigious if we have a scum in the Top 3 or not.

For instance.

Kasabian + Chaos + CC = 43 (None in top 3)

CC + Kazio + Martino = 42 (None in top 3. Assuming a post or 2 can be discounted for not being relevant by mod standards)

Chaos + Martino + Nerau = 41 (None in top 3)

Chaos + Kazio + Martino = 45 (I didn't read KevinH's math, but I'm assuming this could be accounted for by having a few townie posts that aren't relevant. If it can, then that throws even more things wide open)

The mod has said that the battlefield is not meant as a method of catching scum and is meant for encouraging activity. Therefore, it would be quite easy for him to discount posts to throw us off the scent.

I agree that by all means, this could be used as a guideline of finding possible scum matchings and the like. But I urge people not to use this as their primary method of scumhunting. Mafia isn't a game of mathematics.

Assuming KevinH is right, you've only been able to narrow it down to 3 scum in 7 people. If Martino can be included by certain posts being discounted or whatever, all you've managed to exclude from the entire player list is yourself and Canucks (Something that, quite frankly, you would have done anyway - Canucks is pretty pro-town).

Can we pretty please hunt scum now?

Mafia isn't a game of mathematics.

Au contraire, mon frère

It's usually about probabilities and statistics. In this particular game, we get to have more fun.

You probably play poker by looking at opponents' faces.

:smoke:

Sure, knock yourself out.

Since we didn't get night-killed, I could make a case that we should no-lynch again ...

Like Martino, I still think using our vote than choosing no-lynch is better

that's why I was disappointed when people suddenly switched their votes.

One person piqued my interest.

Kasabian's posted on Sept 10. (minus points too for not telling the right one)

Suspiciously, he posted only on Sept 13 and that is when people started switching to no-lynch.

He's the one who dropped the no-lynch hammer. He hasn't even put any text accompanying

his vote. And also minus points for also being the most inactive in the game.

I agree with you nerau, activity is a requirement for everyone. not because a person has the higher count of post it make this person instantly a townie, we have to be careful with that because there may be some scummies trying to fool us

Also lol for the irony.

Anyway my default vote for this day is...

Vote: Kasabian

Unless I'm convinced of the benefits of no-lynching or choosing another suspect (2nd right now is Alasdair probably bec of being inactive)

you've only been able to narrow it down to 3 scum in 7 people. ... all you've managed to exclude from the entire player list is yourself and Canucks

For the benefits of no-lynch, look around. We are in Day 2 with 7 townies alive and more infomation than we had yesterday.

However, I can't assume the doc will get lucky twice in a row and that means we will lose a townie tonight. I assume CanucksDynasty and I will continue to lead the post-count so we probably won't be able to clear anybody else with another battlefield update.

One idea that I'm considering is to suggest lynching either Chaoshawk or Kasabian. They are each in 3 of my 5 combinations.

Vote Count before deadline.

molestargazer (4) - Nerau, CanucksDynasty, ccabal86, Martino

No Lynch (3) - KevinH, Alasdair, molestargazer

Alasdair (2) - Kaziocore, ChaosHawk

Not voting (1) - Kasabian

Deadline Vote Count

No Lynch (6) - KevinH, Alasdair, molestargazer, ccabal86, Kasabian, ChaosHawk

molestargazer (3) - Nerau, CanucksDynasty, Martino

Alasdair (1) - Kaziocore

molestargazer was in line to be deadline lynched with 4 votes.

ccabal86 switched his vote and thus the no lynch gained the upper hand.

Kasabian and Chaoshawk voted no lynch to seal the deal.

The question that needs to be asked is why would mafia have left molestargazer live?

Battlefied posts up to MOD post

1. molestargazer - 2+4+2+0+3+1+2+1+2+4+4+1

2. Chaoshawk - 2+1+1+1+3+2+3+3+1+0+1+1

molestargazer 26

Chaoshawk 19

ccabal86 16

Kaziocore 14

Martino 12

Nerau 10

Alasdair 9

Kasabian 8

So I concur that KevinH tally is correct.

From KevinH math...this is the group I'm leaning towards.

Molestargazer + Alasdair + Kasabian = 43

Alasdair already had the no lynch (at the time only mole, Alasdair and KevinH were lynch candidates).

Molestargazer switched to no lynch to save himself.

Kasabian voted no lynch which pretty much meant the no lynch would happen (ie. 5 votes).

Vote: Kasabian

Deadline Vote Count

No Lynch (6) - KevinH, Alasdair, molestargazer, ccabal86, Kasabian, ChaosHawk

molestargazer (3) - Nerau, CanucksDynasty, Martino

Alasdair (1) - Kaziocore

The question that needs to be asked is why would mafia have left molestargazer live?

Actually, why wouldn't a townie be voting for no-lynch? FOS: Nerau, Martino, Kaziocore (and CanucksDynasty, too! Shame on you!)

1st - CC switched his vote and saved you from a lynch. It makes no sense for him to do so if you are townie and he is mafia. The only way it makes sense is that both of you are townie, or you are mafia and he is townie, or both of you are mafia.

2nd – Your last 2 scenarios are plausible. However, I have a firm belief that Kazio and Martino are townies. Martino can prove it by saying what the hint is and Kazio can prove it by saying what page he saw it on.

Because lynching is the only way for townies to win (in most games).

That's the thing this game is different but with this information we confirmed at least some people are not mafia. I switched for two reasons. One, I did not think molestar was mafia he was simply used to playing the regular way of lynching on day 1 simply to narrow it down. Second KevinH's strategy makes sense but I believe a lynch should be in order this time. I still stand by killing the inactive individuals. The vote number is a rough estimate and a good one but not precise since the MOD does not include double posts nor does he include useless ones. I believe only CanucksDynasty and KevinH are still cleared because of that.

You could have left your vote on Alasdair instead of switching.

It would have resulted in the same outcome.

Indeed...KevinH math supports that both he and I are townies but not molestargazer.

Townies

CD (most posts)

KevinH (2nd most posts)

Who I strongly think are townies

Kaziocore (wanted mid-day update asap)

Martino (wanted mid-day update asap)

ccabal86 (he changed his vote...if he were mafia then mole should be mafia but the math doesn't add up...so by default = townie).

Unknown

Chaoshawk

Nerau

Kasabian

molestargazer

Alasdair

Even before we get numbers with which to play, we can discuss some assumptions.

I assume 3 scum to start.

I assume CD's post counts are correct.

If the assumption of 3 scum is wrong, then we could add

  •
  • KevinH + Kasabian = 44 (just in the interest of full disclosure)
  • Molestargazer + Chaoshawk = 45

If the assumption of 3 scum is wrong, then we could add

But but...it's D2 and I'm alive...aren't I'm scum? :awesome:

I thought about the 3rd party as well.

And if those are the 2 options...then I would go with mole + chaos.

Cuz there would be no reason for Kasabian to vote no lynch if you and he were mafia.

Chaoshawk voting no lycnh would for certain save mole from a lynch.

It would also explain his past and recent defence of mole.

But still...I think it's 3 scum we are dealing with.
