Traitors on the Battlefront

Bombs exploding. Guns firing. The smells of dust, sweat, blood, and tears. This is wartime.

For some reason or another war has sprung up and all you & your squads have gotten called in to fight. The initial invasions and such went extremely well. However, recently you've been losing ground and men...and a lot of them. It seems that almost every time a squad can get into a good position, they get blown to bits or forced back. Attacks, counterattacks, feints, and flanking...none of it seems to work anymore.

And no one seems to be able to figure it out.

Worried that you have traitors in your midst, and separated from a lot of the higher ups, you decide it's time to take action into your own hands and find the traitors.

Rules

(Stolen from mole and edited to my liking)

1. This is game. Play to win; expect to lose. And have fun.

2. No editing or deleting posts.

3. No talking to other players outside the game thread unless your Role PM states specifically that you can.

4. No quoting any PMs from me, including Role PMs. Doing so will get you modkilled. Paraphrasing is OK. If you are worried about something not being ok, then either PM me or just dont say it.

5. Vote for a player to be lynched by using the Vote: Narsis format. You dont need to unvote before voting again, but it is appreciated(especially if you dont vote again right away).

6. Days will last 10 days. Nights will last up to 72 hours, but may be cut short if I get all actions in before then, with a minimum 24 hour night.

6-1. If discussion is lagging, I may impose a shorter deadline at my own discretion. Deadline extensions will happen on request - but will only happen once per day at most, and if I feel there's enough activity to warrant one.

7. A lynch requires a majority (50% rounded down + 1) vote. You can also No Lynch, by using Vote: No Lynch.

7-1. If there is no majority by deadline, only a half-majority is needed. (Majority / 2, rounded up if necessary)

7-2. If there are 2 players with the same amount of at least half-majority votes at deadline, then I will lynch the one who reached that number of votes first.

8. After someone has been lynched, discussion may continue until I can get to the thread and end the day. If you are dead you may continue to post until your death scene is posted. After that point I will only allow a Bah post, and only if you were night killed.

9. Don't use small / invisible font, don't use coloured text(except for mole who is allowed to use orange if he is acting as the super moderator of the forum), and don't use any form of clever encryption or code in your messages.

10. If you haven't posted in 2 days, I'll prod you. If you don't pick up that prod AND post within 48 hours, I'll replace you.

10-1. If you need to be replaced for whatever reason, please PM me, don't flake.

10-2. If you are V/LA, don't rely on me checking the thread / your signature. Please post in the thread notifying me of your V/LA or PM me about it.

10-3. If you replace out, you automatically lose. If you are someone replacing in, whether it counts as a win or loss depends on how long you have been replaced in for.

11. Vote counts will be made whenever I feel like it(or it is asked) and will be done in a separate post.

13. I hope it isn't necessary, but any modkills will negatively effect the rule-breaker's faction in some way which I see fit. If you are modkilled, you lose, no matter how the game ends.

14. I can change, add, or edit rules as I see fit. I will notify players in-thread if this happens.

15. I am not perfect. I may have got something wrong. I may have missed a rule out. Let me know, ask me questions, but don't abuse my mistakes.

15-1. To get my attention in-thread, use the MOD: <Your message> format. Or, y'know, you could PM me.

Special Rules

1. In this game you are fighting over a battlefield. The more posts you make in thread with applicable content(determined by me), the more your side advances against the opponent.

1-1. Double posts(or triple posts etc) will only count as a single post.

2. As such, this game does not have traditional win conditions. Each side wins when they move a predetermined amount of space across the battlefield. (and yes it is balanced and fair)

3. Mafia post counts will be multiplied by (# of townies) / (# of mafia).

4. Any third-party roles will not affect the # of posts for either town or mafia. However, it may play a part in their own powers(if they have any) or win condition.

4-1. Power roles(if there are any) may or may not be affected in a similar way by their post #.

5. The amount of ground controlled by each side will be updated at the start of every day. Note: post numbers will not be revealed, only the percentage of ground each side controls.

6. When a player dies, the amount of posts they were contributing to their side is removed.

7. Due to the inclusion of this mechanic, a side may win before, or after, where they normally would. (ie. mafia may still lose even if they have more then 50% of the remaining players)

8. If you have any questions regarding this mechanic, just ask. I may, or may not, answer it.

The battlefield really did give the town an edge though.

We were able to zero in on some people right away.

That is also what makes the games fun.

If it was always the same...then it would get kinda boring.

Good game everyone.

And good job of modding to Narsis.

@Mole - please update the win/loss thread. :wink2:

actually the town made two incorrect assumptions regarding the battlefield. i'm actually somewhat still surprised you managed to catch scum using it after day 1...

Edit: and for the record: Kaziocore was a 1-shot vig.

Hehehehe

I'm the vigilante!

I wanna play another game with a role.

What tip you off to shoot Alasdair?

That's pretty funny if we used the battlefield incorrectly but still managed to lynch scum.

What were the wrong assumptions?

Hehehehe

First of all, well played. I think you have improved greatly since the last time we played together. You had some highly valuable posts and of course you made a great decision to take out Alasdair. Overal, I'd say the calmer style makes you a much better player. Of course it is easier to stay calm if you don't catch any flack ;). I'd like to echo CD's question though. Why Alas? After the Kasa lynch, I was convinced that the scum were 3 out of CH, Ccabal, Nerau and Alas. CH was, of course, confirmed and out of the others, I would have picked Ccabal and Nerau over Alas. Not by much, but they were slightly higher on my scum radar. What made you go for Alas?

i also need to give some serious congratz to ccabal. this was his first game i believe, but he made some great posts and excellent points.

as for the assumptions...:

First: post counts. yes there are some posts that i haven't counted. so the numbers they are using aren't completely accurate(although they are more or less within 5 posts per person).

Second: an assumption about how the battlefield percentages work. everyone so far has assumed that the modifier for the number of mafia posts is based on living players. however there is something they are missing:

ok let's assume for the sake of argument that there are 5 townies and 2 mafia left alive. if their assumption is correct and both the town and mafia have the exact same average number of posts, then what will the battlefield percentage be? here's a hint: it's 50%.

so then what happens if later in the game we have 1 townie and 2 mafia left alive. and again they have the exact same average number of posts. then what's the percentage? well guess what...it's 50%.

so we have a problem here. in order for the mafia to win they'd either need to kill all the townies or the win percentage for them would need to be around 60% or 55%. however, if it's that low then it'd be very easy for the mafia to win just by posting more than the townies. so then the townies win percentage would need to be low as well, 60% or maybe 70%. but now again if the town happens to overpower the mafia's posting, then they'll get an easy and early win. which leads to a very swingy game.

so i will allow you guys to try to figure out what the exact problem is with that assumption.

Day 1: 7-3

Day 2: 7-3

Night 2: 6-3

=================

I. Successful Kill

Day 3: 5-2

Day 4: 4-1

II. Failed Kill

Day 3: 4-3

Day 4: 3-2

III. Without Kill

Day 3: 5-3

Day 4: 4-2

I was actually thinking whether to use my kill now or later at that time.

What motivated me is that between II and III, the former has less people

which means more chances of getting the mafia.

Also, at that time I'm not yet convinced that Ccabal is really a scum (a little but not that much).

If I did not kill and the game leads to III and Ccabal was lynched, we will lose.

I chose Alasdair, although I was also thinking of killing Nerau, because

he was inactive and I'm afraid that later in the game, no one would vote them

because people have nothing posts really to analyze.

If I'm wrong, at least there's one less suspect for me.

From time to time, I'm tempted to give hints that I'm a vigilante especially

when it was told that there could be a serial killer.

I wanted to say that you're wrong or something ^_^

And thanks again Martino. I became conscious of what I post.

Unfortunately, this led to my suspicion of Kasabian which

led to his death.

Anyways, great game guys!

So what it really means is that mafia posts will always be multiplied by 7/3.

Is that correct?

in this case yes.

also it's worth noting: if we had two more players join i would have reworked the set up a bit to include a third party role :P

Ha ha...so you lucked out on the shot.

I thought you saw some tell from Alasdair.

Good shooting anyways.

Everyone's game has improved.

Or maybe I'm just getting worse.

I really couldn't scum-hunt this game.

Yeah :D

It was luck that Alasdair is an inactive scum.

That's one reason I'm not posting much. :P This may be futile, but I'm not really wanting to attract any attention from the Scumbags yet. I'd rather stay in the game a little longer than that.

In any case, for now...

Unvote

Vote: No-lynch

Because I'd rather reserve judgment for when I'm sure. I have a few ideas right now, but I'm going to wait on them.

Maybe his no-lynching and this part of his post made him suspicious.

Did someone think that I'm the killer of Alasdair during the game?

I said on day one that I'm suspicious of Alasdair and Kasabian.

I was only slightly suspicious of Kasabian but I put him there beside Alasdair

so people would not immediately think that I'm some vigilante or serial killer.

It just so happened that the next day, Kasabian became too defensive so he became more suspicious to me and

add the false doc claim of CH.

Yeah :D

It was luck that Alasdair is an inactive scum.

I thought mole was the vig cuz of his "please please don't ask me to explain" post.

It's nice to have a pro-town power role.

However, I find that I play better as a townie if I'm just a vanilla townie.

Maybe cuz I only got one pro-townie power role in all the games I've played.

@Mole - can you tell us what your night actions were?

Night 1: Kasabian

Night 2: ChaosHawk

Night 3: Martino

so yeah he didnt really learn much of anything helpful. :P
