Two heavily armed men entered the Charlie Hebdo office in Paris's 11th District and opened fire inside, SPG police union spokesman Luc Poignant told CNN affiliate BFMTV.

He said the attack, close to Place de la Bastille, at least three police officers were injured. The Paris mayor's office said at least six people were wounded, according to BFMTV.

The French government raised the country's security alert system to its highest level Wednesday after the attack, according to French media.

Hollande and other senior government officials were due to arrive at the scene of the shooting, BFMTV said.

A witness who works in the office opposite the magazine's told BFMTV that he saw two hooded men, dressed in black, enter the building with Kalashnikov submachine guns.

"We then heard them open fire inside, with many shots," he told the channel. "We were all evacuated to the roof. After several minutes, the men fled, after having continued firing in the middle of the street."

Witnesses also spoke of seeing a rocket launcher, according to French media reports.

It's not yet clear what happened to the gunmen or whether they remain at large. There has also been no claim of responsibility.

The satirical magazine's premises have been under long-running police surveillance because of a potential threat from Islamist extremists.

The magazine's office was burned three years ago in response to its publication of cartoons of the Prophet Mohammed.

In November 2011, Charlie Hebdo's offices caught fire the day it was due to publish a cover making fun of Islamic law.

After watching that vid I'm in shock...these guys need to be arrested and obtain the most inhumane punishment one can think of. I usually don't like to combat violence but violence, but anyone that shares the views of these 3 deserves the same treatment. There is no place on this world for people like them.

Let's not demonize Islam in comparison to other religions. Christianity and Judaism are just as bloody and ridiculous. The only difference is the times and cultural evolution. Christians can't go around burning witches, stoning homosexuals and launching crusades anymore because religion is dying in the west and things are becoming more liberal.

Another thing to keep in mind is that the Salafi/Wahhabi movement is a pretty new thing that popped up in opposition to this global liberalization.  Even most Salafists are opposed to this type of crap. Islam should not be defined by the actions of a few dick heads. That's like defining Christianity based on the actions of the KKK or Westburo Baptist Church or one of the other countless Christian sects that are insane.

I don't follow your point that Christianity and Judaism are just as bloody as modern Islamist extremism.  Did Christianity and Judaism retain its membership by threatening to execute anyone who left their religion? Remember, this is according to the example set by Muhammad.  Does Christianity and Judaism teach that those who were not Jewish or Christian are less than fully human? Muhammad said that Muslims can be put to death for murder, but that a Muslim could never be put to death for killing a non-Muslim. 

 

I am not speaking about all Muslims, but this extremist ideology of hatred towards other religions and killing those that do not believe in "Allah". These extremists have continued their Jihad against other religions for hundreds of years, checked by the ability of non-Muslims to defend themselves. To this day, not a week goes by that Islamic fundamentalists do not attempt to kill Christians, Jews, Hindus and Buddhists explicity in the name of Allah.  This gives Allah a bad name, you don't think?

I say we should just leave the middle east. It's not like this is a war we can win.

Let Israel defend itself. The religious beliefs of a minority in America should not define our foreign policy. If people REALLY want a Jewish state surrounded by millions of Muslims on land that is considered Holy to Abrahamic religion in general, then those people can move there and fight for it themselves, using their own money, weapons, blood and sweat.

Military intervention created Islamic State, so military intervention isn't the solution. Afghanistan is going absolutely nowhere. I mean like WTF are we still doing there? Having a circle jerk? Or do we plan to make it the 51st state?

 

My solution to all of this:

Give the middle east what it wants. We leave, then they can all kill each other and sort it out themselves. Problem solved.

You should read the bible. Both the Torah and Bible specifically state that non-believers should all be killed on numerous occasions. Hell, the bible even tells you to kill your kids if they curse at you, stone your daughter if shes not a virgin on her wedding day, and even exterminate entire towns if even one person among them is a non-believer.

The difference is that while the world has become more liberal, the Muslim culture has stayed relatively the same, because unlike Christianity, Islam cannot be edited or changed. The Quran and Sharia remain the way they were written, unlike the bible.

The west inevitably created this problem when we dissolved the Ottoman Empire. We should have never done that.

This extremist ideology is entirely based on that particular event in history.

OK OK. First off, AQ and IS have the same goals with 2 major differences:

1. Their belief in who is the rightful Caliph.

2. IS believes "purifying" Islamic society should be the first priority. This is why they kill Muslims.

 

In the end, the Salafi/Wahhabi movement is entirely about western interventionism. The entire idea is to recreate the Caliphate which the west conquered, divided and then exploited for decades. It wouldn't exist if we didn't dismantle the Ottoman Empire to fuel our industrialization.

So I've been reading some articles and their is a rather inconsistent report regarding the weaponry used. One article (http://www.theguardian.com/world/2015/jan/07/paris-terror-attack-what-we-know-so-far) metioned the attackers used 'pump-action Kalashnikovs'. What the heck is a pump action Kalashnikov? The'yre Saiga and Vepyr semi auto shotguns, but by no means dothese firearms even resemble the an AK-47/AKM/Ak-74. Other articles I've read just say Kalashnikovs or Kalashnikov submachine guns (Aks-74U perhaps?)

 

A video has currently surfaced showing 2 attackers. One of them is carrying what looks like a short barrelled AK with grey/white handguards and a folding stock. The other black AK looks like an AK-74, as it has a unique muzzlebrake, and it may have an underfolding stock. Footage isn't the best quality but its crazy to think someone risked their life to film it.

I'm afraid people are getting numb to this. This is an outrage, and it has to end. It's getting to where everyone just expects it to happen and shrugs it off as "well it was only 12"... "at least no one lost their head"... "it was them, and not us".

 

Muslims are migrating. More into Europe than anywhere else, and they intend to take over. My position became clear on 9/11 when I saw my city of Las Vegas in a single day... vacated. Empty. As in ghost town. The largest tourist city in the world changed over night.

 

There are two kinds of Muslims. The ones that hate you, and the ones that want to kill you.

Declare worldwide, Islam is a form of government and treat it as such. Until we take this dead serious, we will have more deaths.

Reporters always suck at identifying weapons. I also face palmed when I read "Kalashnikov Sub machine guns." Whatever the hell that is. (AK-74U is a Carbine).
