Also, during the Lincoln's time, it was the Republicans that were relatively more progressive than conservative?

These might be silly questions to you Lys :P

Also the Republican convention of 1860 was also a heated convention where Lincoln barely won through shrewd politics. Learned that from CNN's "Race for the White House"...

Explain the last line... ?

The election of Woodrow Wilson began the era of big government, that us Republicans hate so much.

Progressive didn't exist then. The Republican Party was founded as the anti-slavery party, and is now the party of American Conservatism. The Democratic Party was the party of Andrew Jackson, and is now the party of American Liberalism.

I would rather call it "total government", as it was about then that the whole of US was "properly" colonized/settled and a comprehensive beaurocracy could be established with centralized decision making.

Most people shouting "big government" just want an island to themselfes...

So I take it the outcome is now known.

Both Trump and Cruz will run and all that matters is which is third party.

Ted Cruz will never run third party. Trump on the other hand, could, and should, in my opinion. I'm not a huge Trump supporter, but they forced him to sign a pledge to support the nominee, and now those same people, that all signed the same pledge, and forced him to sign it, are now saying they will not support him. The expense of running third party may be too much for even Trump to swallow... we shall see. This entire election is in complete chaos... on both sides... I don't know what is going to happen, but it will make the history books.

Trump just alienated women voters imo w/ that Abortion comment.....

The comment was based on a hypothetical question about what would happen if abortion became illegal. It was a stupid trap that Trump fell into. He should always decline to answer questions based on any hypothetical, and impossible, situation, but guess what... if abortion is deemed illegal... it's only common sense that punishment is not only appropriate, but required. But everyone knows it will never happen, so it was too stupid to even feed into the obvious gotcha question.

I'm done with all of it for a while. We will continue to destroy anyone who is willing to do the job properly, while electing all the wrong ones just because they pissed off the least amount of people.

And yet somehow, Rick Santorum and Mike Huckabee, never seemed to mess up so badly on this topic.  (They both would seek to punish the doctors involved in the hypothetically illegal abortions.)
Maybe, despite Trump's claims, he is not "like, a really smart person."

Tonight is a big one. If Trump comes up with a miracle victory, he may lock this up. If everything goes as planned, and Cruz wins... it probably forces a contested convention, where they will take the nomination away from Donald Trump, and give it to somebody else. I don't see the Republican Party giving the nomination to Ted Cruz, so this can get really interesting if the Donald cannot get to 1,237.

Polls in Wisconsin close in about an hour... we shall see.

Trump looked bad on abortion because there is no way a person running for politics in the US can not be aware that question was coming and should have a prepared answer and have actually thought about policy in that area.

And with Wisconsin heavily Cruz I am off to invest in popcorn shares for the convention.

Lys, you think GOP will win generals if they take away the nomination from Trump and give to Cruz or anyone else?

This could be the beginning of the end for Mr. Trump. He better prepare for running as a 3rd party candidate if he's still interested in the White House.

Cruz hit close to the 50% voter mark which Trump hasn't been able to pull off.

Ted Cruz opened up a big can of whoop ass on Trump in Wisconsin last night. This is what happens when you run a negative campaign against a very popular Governor, and a very popular Congressman, in their own state, when they are not the ones running against you. I would love for someone to come up with a good reason to ever try that strategy... but it really doesn't matter at this point.

Ted Cruz - 48.2%

Donald Trump - 35.1%

John Kasich - 14.1%

What we will see now is Cruz and Kasich trying desperately to prevent Trump from reaching 1,237 delegates. Beginning with New York in 2 weeks, the primaries are rolling into very friendly territory for Donald Trump. Face it... the northeast likes Trump a whole bunch more than a Tea Party guy from Texas. Kasich is staying in to be an asshole at this point... candidates that were doing far better than he is, dropped out long ago... he has zero chance, but can't resist the fun of messing things up.

Current Delegate Count (CNN)

Donald Trump - 743

Ted Cruz - 510

Needed to win - 1,237

Trump looked bad on abortion

There's really something wrong with you guys when you believe someone can possibly look good on abortion.

Lys, you think GOP will win generals if they take away the nomination from Trump and give to Cruz or anyone else?

Yes... easily. When all this ends, and we all have our nominees... things get real. Bernie supporters will get behind Hillary, and the Trump Republicans will back their guy... whoever it is. Hillary Clinton is a horrible candidate, and represents everything that has gone wrong with the USA since JFK was assassinated.

If they allow Ted Cruz to have the nomination, the Republicans will have a very strong candidate. I like Ted Cruz very much... he was my second choice after Marco Rubio. He tends to preach too much, but that's personality. He has a penchant to dabble in dirty politics, but no one wins if they don't know how to play that game. He is a master debater... wow that sounds dirty... he is a champion debater, that's sounds better. If the nominee is Hillary Clinton, he will disassemble her on a debate stage. If the nominee is Bernie Sanders, that would be too easy because I'm sure Teddy has been crushing the life out of the Socialist debate since he was in high school. To his benefit... I like his tax plan over anyone else that has been in this race.

This could be the beginning of the end for Mr. Trump. He better prepare for running as a 3rd party candidate if he's still interested in the White House.

Could be. If Trump doesn't hit 1,237, they will turn on him after the first ballot. The question will be... will they give it to Cruz?

I've been staying out of this, but gotta comment on this one. If Trump can't reach the magic number, neither Trump nor Cruz will be the Republican party candidate. They'll find someone to run that the establishment likes, and Cruz has made them look bad on too many occasions by actually following through on his promises to work to block certain legislation.

My issue is that where I live, in Nebraska, I know at the general election the western portion of the state will vote Republican, while the eastern portion (mainly Omaha and Lincoln) will vote Democrat. Because we split our delegates, 2 will go to the Republican nominee, and 1 will go to the Democrat.

I've been openly pissed about the candidates going to back before Obama started running, and have been voicing my dissatisfaction at the polls by voting Libertarian (even though I know nothing about their candidate), and then regularly contacting my members of the state and federal elected representatives and letting them know how I feel about particular legislation.

Really off topic, but I listen to a lot of podcasts while at work, and someone (won't say who, but if you listen to this guy, you'll know who I'm talking about) calls the election season the "assclown circus", and said that he hears or plays the circus calliope music whenever he sees the talking heads on tv. Now, every time there's mentions of Clinton, Sanders, Trump, Cruz, or Kasich, that's all I hear. To the point, I have started humming it, and my wife is getting pissed at me (huge Clinton fan, thinks I'm making fun of her, only problem is, I'm making fun of all of them).

Yes Sir, I know what you mean. Nebraska is the only red state that will throw half their support to a Democrat. If we analyze our positions on issues, most of us will come up with Libertarian blood. The problem with voting Libertarian is, it will not win. The feelings you express are exactly why Trump and Sanders are such strong candidates right now... so many people are just pissed off at the same people, saying the same things, and things do nothing but get worse.
