Preventing your internet service provider from gathering data on you... you know the guys that allow you on the internet?... it's unfair to them when everyone else on the internet is exempt. Your ISP is doing nothing to you compared to Google, Amazon, Facebook... and everyone else. Nobody cares about how often you visit IronCentral. Get over yourselves, and stop acting like you own the internet. It's a privilege... not a right. Report

Get over yourselves, and stop acting like you own the internet. It's a privilege... not a right. How about if I sell you a car, can I use it to tell people where its at? Or perhaps where its been? Also Google and Facebook don't charge anything, last I checked I get a pretty large internet bill every month for service less than that of other countries. So in what world do you feel they are within their right to charge us for an inferior product and then sell our information after bribing senators to allow this and other misdeeds from occurring? March 29, 20179 yr comment_902175 Furthermore, you can opt out of Google or Facebook's data collection by private browsing or using appropriate settings. No such option for the ISP, especially since they usually have a monopoly on internet services in many areas. So not only do they know EXACTLY what content you are watching (minus on https websites, though they still know the site) they can sell this data to anyone that pays for it, be that the government, corporations, criminals, terrorists... The only thing you can do to prevent this is use a VPN or Tor, which will significantly slow down your connection. If Trump signs this, it will mean instant Orwellian surveillance for everyone in the US, arguably worse, since at least in 1984 they knew it was the state that listened in...here you will have no idea who will. March 29, 20179 yr comment_902180 How about if I sell you a car, can I use it to tell people where its at? Or perhaps where its been? It's already there. Anything with a GPS knows where you are. It's sold as an easy way for you to get where you want to go, but it works by first letting everyone know where you are. Your smart phone is a tracking device. The only way to stay off the grid is to never go on it. Opting out doesn't protect you from anything... it just confirms they have hit their target. The internet is the new marketplace, and when you turn it on and plug in... you are in their world, and they will know who you are one way or another. Zuckerberg, Bezos, and other buddies of Obama wanted him to kill some of their competition... that is it. If you want privacy, stay off. Anything and everything you do online is at risk of being abused. It's the new world, and creating a regulation to single out and restrict one entity to benefit others is not right. Report

Anything and everything you do online is at risk of being abused. It's the new world, and creating a regulation to single out and restrict one entity to benefit others is not right. It is not a matter if it is already here, but whether or not it is legal. Right now it is illegal to track cars, and you can turn location off on your smart phone. What annoys me isn't that they are doing it, but that they are allowed to do it. The government and clever hackers have been able to track us since the late 90s. Hell they have been doing movies for years about how hackers and special agents do some of that crap. With this data anyone can pick out a person in particular and rob them using social engineering and by making something like this legal means that some basement dweller who isn't smart enough to learn how to do it without getting caught before can now acquire mass amounts of data and use that maliciously without as much effort. It is an unnecessary security risk, all because a few companies paid our politicians who aren't supposed to be bought to get a bill passed which doesn't benefit you or I in any way. tl;dr Just because they can and have been, doesn't mean that they should. Furthermore why the hell should we make it easy for them? Report

The thing is ISPs are basically a monopoly, one that is funded by us both via taxes and us being customers. When a small group of people are able to collect data which is knowledge and we all know knowledge is power. Now I admit I might be paranoid but every time we let the bad guys win we all suffer. Just to clarify I call them the bad guys because they do not care about you or I, but instead only about themselves and do not care what potential damage can be caused from their actions as long as they get what they want. March 30, 20179 yr comment_902282 I love my ISP, but I do believe it costs way too much. Sometimes it feels like they're taking a pint of blood per month along with the $250 we send them. I wouldn't know of anyone else that would deliver my TV, phone, and internet. So I would say that makes them a monopoly... but the service is amazing. Cox Communications is the culprit. The bastards will be pumping Game of Thrones into my living room starting July 16... those bastards. Report

Your ISP is doing nothing to you compared to Google, Amazon, Facebook... and everyone else. Nobody cares about how often you visit IronCentral. Get over yourselves, and stop acting like you own the internet. It's a privilege... not a right. Internet is actually a human right. you get tons of free shit from google, facebook etc, in exchange, if you 'allow' them, they track your history and serve you ads, you have a choice, give up privacy for free shit. ISPs already charge you an arm and leg, but hey, I guess if they'll give you a choice to use your history and give you lower rates, it's an option some people would choose and they should be allowed to choose to do that. But all in all, I do agree that there is no such thing as privacy on internet. Report

I think I've heard this argument before, but from the other side. If it were the Democrats that let this happen, he would have been the first person to jump on that shit. Man, you don't know me at all. The Democrats in control of the FCC created a rule in October of last year to take away the practice of service providers directing advertisers to people that are searching for their products. Not Google, not Facebook, not Amazon, not anyone, except Internet Service Providers. It was killed in the house, before the court would have killed it. This would have never stood up in court. It wasn't to "protect you"... it was to kill competition for Barack Obama's buddies. Trust me... if you go to the Disneyland site to check out how much they are charging for tickets, you will suddenly have Disney ads everywhere you go. It was that way before, and it's still that way. The only thing this does is help Disney be able to shop around for who Disney is paying to show their stupid banners. No one cares about you personally, except identity thieves, and all that has always been illegal. Kapish? Report

March 30, 20179 yr comment_902380 To say I'm disappointed is an understatement about this. I am and will always support individual freedoms and not support people looking to take that away. It doesn't matter what companies or who can collect ones data and give it out. Because one company or a whole group isn't allowed to do something shitty that others can is not a reason to allow more people to do it. Much rather see legislation passed to stop the collecting and selling and promote individual privacy then expand it.To say well you can always not go online if you don't want your information out is such a terrible argument and point. There's no "right" to use a telephone or cellphone, so does that mean you don't mind if the Government, your neighbor, or anyone else who posses the ability to do so listen to your conversations? Are you cool with revelation by Snowden leaked that the NSA was wiretaping and listening to people's telephone calls and emails and so on? I mean, you don't have a protected "right" to use it, so i guess you're cool with that. You can always, you know, never use a telephone if you don't want to. Taking away individual freedoms and privacy is a slippery slope, and I for one will always advocate for ones freedom and privacy. It's a disgrace instead of protecting the privacy of individuals and being more for ones freedom we only look to expand it. I for one don't care to have anyone know what I do or go online nor should they. You're opening the door for a whole lot of shit, and I hope so much crowdfunded campaigns dig deep enough and expose embarrassing information about those who voted for it. I will for one, laugh my ass off. http://i66.tinypic.com/sq2rue.jpg Yea, speaking of helping "buddies" Report
