August 21 Solar Eclipse

Who's going to see it? My area is expected to be packed with people. I may just go out into the mountains to watch it and take a camping trip. No town around here is designed to cope with the amount of people expected to come here, so it's going to suck. The internet is expected to get really slow anyway, so I may just disappear for a week or so.

Where will you be?

North Florida. Every time there's a lunar or solar event, i never see it. It's always unclear or super cloudy. I live in Panama City so it could just be pot smoke...

I would love to be able to see it though. What mountains will you be at?

You could see from South Carolina.

Borah peak would by far be the best place in the state to see it. But I imagine other people have the same idea and that's a bit far. So probably somewhere between Bone and Palisades or something, if it's visible from there.

Will you be able to see it in Indiana

Nope. It just misses you. :(

You should try being near farm animals, they get eerie quiet when it happens :D

Maybe because of the darkness? No shortage of cattle around here but IDK if I'll be near any. Farmers might start getting a little protective over their property when hordes of people start flooding in and exploring.

Yeah they react to the darkness, while it doesn't get to be nighttime you will get the roosters "going off" when it is over :D

The darkness itself is eerie aswell, definatly get a higher vantage point so you can actually see it swooping in!

I witnessed this one, and the next "easy" European one is in 2081 :(

You americans are lucky, your "easy" next one is in 2024!

I'll be watching it in NY. Won't be a total eclipse for me but the sun will appear as a crescent shape.

This site gives an animation of what your view will look like on that day based on what state you are in.

I caught a full one in 1999 in Hungary. It really was amazing, don't miss it if it's close to you.

Anecdote: it's actually the fist time when I felt contempt towards an adult on an intellectual basis. Back then I used to spend my summers with my grandma at her weekend house at lake Balaton. There was this woman she was friends with who was about 60 something, but not super old. I was 13. We went over for some tea, and we asked her whether she was looking forward to the solar eclipse. The woman said no, and she was in fact afraid that aliens would "take advantage of the darkness, and land while everyone was watching the eclipse ". You could tell she really meant it. I of course knew adults could be wrong about things even before that, but it's the first time I actually met someone whom I classed as a true idiot.

Some cool crescent shaped shadows caused by the eclipse (taken just after):

And the eclipse itself:

Definitely the coolest thing I've ever seen. It got very cold.

I never noticed you had L0bster Party in your sig!

She's been the keeper of the flame since Montosh went into the void.

Woke up the mornin'... got myself a beer. Not really, just doing a bad impression of Jim Morrison right now... but, it was heavily overcast, and our experience in Las Vegas was 30% sunlight through complete cloud cover, and lots of rain. Hazaar!

It was like doing acid only it just lasted 30 minutes instead of 8 hours. Very cool. Very surreal. Wish it happened more often. :D

edit: btw one of my fellow FTW members told me he prepared for this by starring at the sun for 3 months, to be immune to the eclipse.

Another said he's going to a volcano with a chicken to make a wish come true.

Smart people in FTW. xD

Quoting myself because I was accurate lol lots of pot smoke. But when the overcast cleared I did see a slight crescent on the outer rim of the sun.

Next one is in 2024! Definitely traveling to see that one.
