July 20, 20179 yr comment_914037 I wrote an email to my state representative today about a budget issue. To my amazement he called me a few hours later! We talked for over 30 minutes and, while I don't agree with his position, he did make me think and I plan to do some further research into his argument. I did not vote for him and I probably won't vote for him in the future because we disagree on too many key issues, but I respect him a lot more than I used to. I write to all of my elected officials when I feel strongly on an issue and this is the first time I've gotten a personal response. Nice to know someone in power is listening... or maybe he was bored and had a half hour to kill. Report

Well that is some bullshit!I wrote a 3 page letter which I sent to Obama, Hillary, the UN sec. gen., some other relevant people, and pretty much the entire government of the state of Idaho. The subject was Libya, just days after our "no fly zone" was implemented. I wasn't particularly nice about it, but I was completely sincere. Even better, literally every single thing I said would happen, to a fucking T, happened.Of all the asshats who received that letter, not a single one responded. Which is exactly what I expected, since I was 100% right about every tiny detail. So with that being said, I'm glad your government actually has the decency to respond to you. I cannot say the same about mine. They clearly serve the agenda of Frank Vandersloot and pay no attention to dissent or questioning. Report

Representative tend to respond more often and take interest in what their constituents have to say. Senators usually have an aide or staff member reply if you are lucky to hear anything at all. July 20, 20179 yr comment_914067 Did you write to your Representative or Senator? I was confused here as well. "State Representative" sounds like local State Assembly to me, where if you contact your Congressman, it would be your district representation in Washington DC. Your State Representatives in Washington DC, are your 2 Senators. If you write to a Senator, like I recently did to Dean Heller to tell him to man up and be a Republican or he will face a primary... you will get a "Thank you for your continued support" letter in return. It's quite condescending, but they are well aware that everyone votes for the party anyway, so it's all about turnout. For some reason we are missing a name. Too bad, I would send him a hefty donation. Report

July 20, 20179 yr Author comment_914070 State Representative serves the state legislature only. I would have said senator or congressman if they were federal. Sorry I was unclear. I've written to many state and federal officials and agencies. My first letter was sent when I was 7 or 8 or 9 years old, asking the President to tell my parents to raise my allowance. I've gotten form letters, form emails, and no responses, this was my first personal response. I would be beyond amazed if any federal official (other than congress) responded directly. Fox Fire, I know how you feel. I wrote to all my federal representatives about the Iraq war and how we didn't have enough evidence and reason to attack them. Everyone ignored me. @SM:youre pretty lucky!I wrote also letters to:Alexander The Great, Nero, Napoleon, Jesus himself, Mussolini, Pope and a nice girl from neighborhood.NOONE answered Next time i plan to write Arnold S.Did you use enough postage? July 20, 20179 yr comment_914098 I've actually only written a politician once and received no response. Never felt the need to do it again. It was about the bias in the government regarding single parenthood and how all the forms, agencies (outside the court itself), and employees regard Single Custodial Fathers well below the equivalent of a Single Mother. I've had the police not enforce active orders (this was corrected when a supervisor got involved, so I regard this as a misunderstanding; not a deliberate disregard).I've had CPS tamper with an investigation (Judge seen the evidence and was pissed.)I've had the Attorney General tell me they don't have any forms I can sign for Child Support as all their forms refer to the Mother as the custodial and not a single form refers to a father as the custodial. This was the main part of my letter, just to have the AG create an alternate form to avoid confusion. Still, no form in Texas exists for this yet. I don't need the Child Support at all, but its about the equality and how I know for a fact, she'd slam my ass for every penny I have if the roles were reversed. Plus, it would be nice to get extra money to put aside for things like his daycare, or medical things. Sorry for venting. Report
July 20, 20179 yr comment_914101 Sadly, the best I can say I've gotten from writing any politician (state or federal level) is some mass printed and signed letter by mail that thanked me for voicing my opinion, and the reasons why he was going to vote a certain way. SeeBeeGipson, that sucks. Report

May 3, 20188 yr Author comment_944042 So I had ANOTHER impressive exchange with the same guy! I’m gonna quote what I shared on Facebook about it because I’m sick and too lazy to write it out. “I wrote an email to my State Representative, Frank Camillo, this afternoon asking him to support a bill before the state legislature and to reinstate funding that was cut from Husky A. A few minutes ago Mr. Camillo called me from his mobile phone to thank me for bringing it to his attention. He said there are hundreds of bills atm and he didn’t know where “we” stand on this, but he’d look into it and into reinstating the funding. This is the second time he’s called me after I emailed him about state issues! I am very impressed and if I didn’t disagree with him on nearly every issue I would certainly vote for him. I’m just really glad to have something - anything - positive to say about a politician.” Report
