Mage Wars Mafia

It was quiet that night in Arcanus, as usual. It was around midnight, and most everyone was in bed asleep, or getting ready to go to sleep. Suddenly, powerful explosions rocked the town. The whole town shook as though it was an earthquake. Out of some windows, you could see colourful flashes of light. Then it stopped. Puzzled, afraid, and intrigued, the townsfolk got out of bed to investigate. They found the fields of Farmer Joe scorched badly, and here and there it looked as though there had been an explosion. Talking amongst themselves and putting tow and tow together, they soon realized that these were no ordinary explosions; they were caused by magic. Everyone headed back to their homes in fear and awe wondering what would happen next...

It's suspicious all the votes are coming in just because of Kevin's stance. We might as well just lynch him every game because of his stance.

Actually, I think mafia is about playing with "friends" and I don't mind pleasing them.

Somehow I've earned four votes while trying to investigate reactions to my play.

It's a bit naive to think that my actions are scummy; I'm only trying to help.

While I, obviously, play mafia to enjoy myself, I also play to win. Changing your opinion/actions competely each time someone disagrees with you is not getting us anywhere.

Am I convinced that you are scum? No, but your line of play simply did not feel right. I was actually debating putting a second vote on theophilos to see what you would do. But then you already unvoted after a little pressure from CD.

@SJ - was this supposed to be an actual vote?

Cuz it's not bolded if it was.

I can't believe I missed this one.

It was suupposed to be a vote, but regardless ..... unvote

By the way, everyone needs to cut KevinH some slack. Nothing he is doing is scummy, it seems more like evolution of gameplay to me. No need to penalize that by voting for the same person regardless of what he does.

8-a. If there is no majority by deadline, only a half-majority is needed.

8-b. If there are 2 players with the same amount of at least half-majority votes at deadline, then I will lynch the one who reached that number of votes first.

I'm the first to half-majority so things aren't looking good for the home team. I appreciate the support from my friends...

9. After someone has been lynched, you can continue to talk.

I just noticed that rule 9 makes play different than usual. When Narsis gets back, I'd like clarification. Who gets to continue talking and for how long?

To what exactly has his gameplay evolved? He is back at his no lynch vote, so not much has changed. Except that now he is no longer doing it because he feels it is the right thing to do, but because he believes it will give him the least amount of heat. So now we have KevinH not only employing a strategy that is in the advantage of the scum, but doing so just to save his own skin and not with the intent to help the town.

so he'd show up around here!

Is the town better off if we don't lynch a townie? Yes.

Is there information to be gained from someone's voting patterns? Yes.

So while I still believe it is better to go into the night with one more townie, I have decided that it doesn't hurt anything to vote and let those who think it means something do their analysis.

A vote of No Lynch is only more useful if a majority want the day to end immediately without a lynch.

If the four players voting for me think the town will be better off if I am lynched, so be it. But when I am revealed townie, I hope the remaining players will consider the very weak excuses used to place the votes on me and think that maybe scum just might use very weak excuses to lynch a townie.

Alright well in a few hours I will be leaving for my camping trip. I will be gone from the 14th(today) until the 21st(next Friday). The game will remain in Day 1 until I get back etc. Use the possibly extra time wisely and see you in a week. :)

I believe the deadline is today.

If deadline is today,

We need a lynch today. KevinH's wishy-washiness regarding his voting and no lynch is not by any means concrete. It is, however, strange, and worthy enough of my vote for now.

Don't Days last two weeks? We started on Aug. 13 so we should still have 6 more days. I think Narsis' post was referring to if there was a 7 vote-to-lynch thus it should be Night.

The problem with your change in style KevinH is that it is perceived as a form of appeasement to the anti No Lynch crowd, which could be a scum tell in that you want to be perceived as doing what the town wants.

But on the other hand, it would be quite obvious for you to do such thing. I'm wondering if it's a slip up or an honest strategy.

Didn't you vote for him already? He's still at 4 votes I believe.

well from what i got narsis said he'll come back today not that the day ends today... so, i kind'a do hope i'm right and that you voted for him before this... this day just felt waaay to short...

actually, upon rereading, i think this post makes you look really scummy... (the bold part). i don't really understand, what reactions were you expecting??

I figured I'd do a Post-by-Post analysis of KevinH to see if anything jumps out, or to see if I've made a horrible decision.

I won't be doing a points system like I did in Streets of Karma - instead, I'll be relying on my gut, which in said game I ignored and regretted it.

  • First post. Nothing to see here. Move along.
  • Second Post. Typical KevinH. Nothing to see here either.
  • Third Post. Makes a comment about EM's lifespan making him more or less likely to be scum. With his old playstyle, this might be true. With this new one, we'll see.
  • Fourth Post. Fluff.
  • Post 5 and 6 focus on possible clues in the flavour text, which I have already stated I am dead against.
  • Post 7, first outlines this idea of a 'compromise'. This is the first sign of KevinH buckling under the pressure that we inevetably always place on him for the No-lynch saga. My gut doesn't like this.
  • Post 8. Explaining how that people think his No-lynch strategy is anti-town, so decides to improve this by.. getting a no-lynch another way. This is generic trying-to-please-people.
  • Post 9. Calls CanucksDynasty's post a scumtell - ridiculously - and continues on his usual "I'll-tell-you-so" rant. I can't decide whether this can be excused by KevinH's meta.
  • Post 10. Finally puts his plan into practise and votes Theophilos. I've already explained why I don't like the plan. Let's move on.
  • Post 11. Says he's "just trying to get on". I can't decide if this is scumtell or simply trying to create a pleasant playing environment.
  • Post 12. Returns to No-lynch after barely a few posts of having posted. Note this was immediately after a vote by CD for his new style and for his "trying to get along". This seems to me like a simple way to try and blend back into his meta again. And that's scummy.
  • Post 13...

Here, KevinH states that his pleasing thing WAS due to trying to create a friendly environment. He seems to denounce the votes on him by saying there's little substance to the claims, and states that he was trying to investigate reactions to his play, and that he's "only trying to help". I'm dubious.
@KevinH - What have you learnt through this investigation? If you had to pick someone you think would be scum today, who would it be?
  • Post 14. Says he appreciates support from his friends. Appealing to emotion. Scummy.
  • Post 15. Says that people can learn things from voting patterns through his idea without lynching - but you only learn from vote patterns when you build SERIOUS CASES. Uses the very generic "When I turn town..." argument. Doesn't do anything to convince me.
  • The latest post. Saying deadline is today. Nothing to see here.

At the end of my read, I've been inexplicably hit with the gut idea that KevinH is town, despite everything I've read against him.

The question now is if I still think a D1 lynch is so necessary. More to come when I've thought of it.

I'm probably going to catch a lot of flak for this, no matter which way my decision swings. I don't care. I'm making my own decision, and when I make it (I haven't yet!), I'll trust it to be in the best interests of the town and balls to what anyone else thinks of it.

...

Decision made.

My vote stands.

  • We need a Day 1 lynch. It's as simple as that. KevinH's flip can help determine scum from voting patterns that we simply wouldn't know without the lynch.
  • Just in case I'm wrong. It's happened before.

If KevinH flips town, I'm not going to turn around and say 'I told you so'. I'm going to carry on playing and find the scum using that information.

@KevinH - I'm sure you disagree with my opinion. I'm not unvoting. I'm hoping you'll have enough votes for lynch at deadline.

It's nothing personal. You're a cool guy. But we need this lynch.

However, I would very much like for you to contribute ALL you can before your lynch. Who do you think looks town, and scum? That information could be VITAL to us. Not giving it just seems like you're even more guilty.

So be it.

Unvote: No Lynch

Vote: Theophilos

Theophilos doesn't have any votes yet and he might be scum.

I did actually vote. I just didn't post much, cause yeah were back to discussing pro's and con's of the no-lynch vote and such and we did that in one game already.

Now I don't think Kevin is scum, but I do agree it's better if we all vote and lynch and maybe even catch scum with it! Add to that the possible implications for future reference down the line and yeah ... it's a win-win situation even if we lynch a townie.

@Kevin, your probably not scum, that said ...

I'm not sure if today is deadline as I did not specifically see "Deadline is xxx".

All I saw was Narsis is returning today and the time he was away was considered extra time.

So if someone can paraphrase (not quote...just in case it's a mod-killable offence) where Narsis said today is the deadline then it would be most appreciated.

CD.

Do you really need this lynch?

No you don't.

To lynch is to risk killing off a townie. The odds favor that. Worse still, you risk killing a townie power role. That said, there's no hard feelings on my part (and maybe next game you'll believe me).

There are certain truths in this game. One is that on day 1, nobody really knows anything.

However, I'll give the vital information as requested by Mole.

I've dropped a few hints from my role PM throughout my postings.

  • Sir Jesus and Falzis may have picked up on them when they defended me so they are probably pro-town.
  • Electric Mango, Molestargazer, CanucksDynasty, Martino, and Theophilos certainly didn't pick up on them so there's probably a scum or two amongst them.

... until the 21st(next Friday). The game will remain in Day 1 until I get back etc. Use the possibly extra time wisely

This quote is why I believe it ends today.

An alternative interpretation could be that "even if somebody gets 8 votes, you can keep talking until I get back on the 21st".

Regardless, I'm ready for the day to end.

Theophilos doesn't have any votes yet and he might be scum.

I was trying to say that Theophilos didn't have any votes against him and thus my vote against him wouldn't put him in danger of lynch. The "he might be scum" was an attempt at humor by giving a very very weak justification for my vote.
