The Elections 2020 Thread
Interesting perspective. I believe it would be a big mistake for Biden to pick a VP candidate from the progressive side, as it's not them he needs to win over, it's the undecided voters. They aren't many, but more than enough to swing some key states in either direction. At this point the progressive wing will take Biden over Trump no matter what, as they want to avoid a second term at all costs, so he has that vote. A progressive candidate however is guaranteed to dissuade the undecided base to vote Democrat.

The Elections 2020 Thread
While the topic of the day is of course COVID-19, the 2020 US presidential elections are fast approaching. I've created a topic to discuss anything related to that, and to update as events unfold. So, it's still early days, what are everyone's thoughts? What topic will dominate the discussions? (IMO: the Economy and jobs, all the way) Who will be Biden's VP nominee? (My guess: Amy Klobuchar) Will the elections be close? (IMO: Incredibly, Biden is a much more palatable candidate for many than Hillary Clinton), etc. Also, KEEP IT RESPECTFUL. The point is not to win a debate, but to share your point of view.

The Coronavirus
I didn't look at all... it must be more important to you. Yes it is important to me. Fake news aimed at discrediting science and genuinely helpful people, who are trying to slow the death rate at a time when 80,000+ Americans have died from a new disease in less than 5 months. That is important to me. The fact that you, a man who models himself as a well informed American, who hates fake news, are spreading it is disappointing. ( @ )( @ ) ccabal! I’m very glad Hungary is doing well and you are safe! Please be careful and stay well. Have you been telecommuting? Yes, fortunately I can do that. I'm also privileged enough that my income has not suffered, which many people cannot say at this time Grieving. Griefing is what you do in CounterStrike

The Coronavirus
Glad to see you SM, it's been a while! So, the government has finally started large-scale testing here in Hungary, and very few cases outside of hospitals and retirement homes have been found. The country is slowly reopening.

Attention Command & Conquer Fans!
Developed shorty after C&C, they made an enjoyable RTS. It will suffer from clunky UI and late 90's graphics, but they are fun. https://www.gog.com/game/total_anihilation_commander_pack https://www.gog.com/game/total_annihilation_kingdoms Current price is 6 bucks, but you can wish list, wait for a sale, and get them for a song. Thanks, I might give it a go. Heh, I played on a Pentium 1, with a 125 Mhz processor. I think it had 8MB of RAM. My parents got it for me back in 1995, and it was quite expensive

Cognitive Biases in the Political Arena
I will tell you that I'm prone to: The Halo Effect (I tend to think people's incompetence in one field to be a sign of general incompetence)False Concensus (surely people see this, it's so fucking obvious)Declinism (we're all going to hell in a handbasket) --> This actually I'm consciously paying attention to these days to get better at avoiding it

The Coronavirus
The WHO should fill the role it's supposed to fill, and should do so impartially. As of right now, Daddy China has way too much influence over it, arguably to the point where it severely mismanaged the current crisis by pandering to China's interests. Obviously there should be an international platform where medical professionals can meet, exchange ideas, pool data, monitor trends etc, but I'm not sure a 20th century dinosaur like the WHO can fill in that role effectively anymore. It certainly doesn't seem to be able to respond to challenges of the 21st century. I cautiously surmise that probably something more "networked" would be much more effective, but I don't have the expertise to make a recommendation for the organizational structure here. I'm positive though that with enough thought and determination from organizational experts and politicians it could be done.

The Coronavirus
No worries, the US SoS has it covered... To tell you the truth, I find the lab theory more and more believable. Yes, it's proven that the virus evolved naturally, but that doesn't mean they didn't accidently release a strain of coronavirus that they were observing there. A sloppy lab technician who accidently infected himself and then dropped by the market after work is all it takes, and we do know from 2018 that they were indeed, sloppy. Plausible yes, but probably not. Heck it is very probable that the "stock-virus" from which this pandemic originated is presented in a couple labs around the world, the thing that actually made this a pandemic is rather a natural shift most probably from a pangolin transfer. That part you don't just willy nilly make in a labo, nor would you find it in "the wild" without already having an outbreak. Meanwhile, Trump will move the "low end of the plane" further up each time it actually crosses it. Guess he thinks estimates are not meant to be crossed... Well, it's not entirely unfeasible they were running their own natural evolution tests on the "stock virus" as you called it. Certainly not with the intent of weaponizing it, mind you, just to see how these kinds of virii can evolve, maybe learn more about them. Hell, it's the kind of test I'd run, were I in charge of a lab like that.
