Heres a list of the ones I have enjoyed recently Company of Heroes 2 - less base building than traditional RTS Homeworld Remastered - RTS in space. Your base is a mothership which you upgrade, research, and build stuff from Warhammer 40k Dawn of war 2 - Pretty close to a Moba since there is almost no base building at all. Age of Mythology - AoE with Minotaurs, and last I checked it was easy to find an online game. Lord of the rings battle for middle Earth 2 - simplified RTS, have no idea the online population these days, though the servers were cross platform so it might still be kicking. Grey Goo - Never played it myself but I heard good things about it. This might be your best bet since it came out early last year. If you are willing to allow a bit of turn based you can roll with the total war series, Attila and Shogun are good but avoid Rome 2.

It was a darkening and stormy afternoon, just before nightfall when I discovered R2V's deepest darkest secret. We were coming back from watching a game of sportball at McDrinksalot pub. When we ran across a traveler with a broken down car; R2V ever the gentleman noticed that it was a lady in distress and ran to her rescue. While fixing the car with nothing but a piece of duct tape and peanuts from the pub he realizes something... Her voice it sounds so familiar but from where? It was then it hit him, just like the hood of the car when he jumped up with excitement! She was the voice actress to his favorite cartoon "School Days". He fawned over her and even got her autograph. Once AAA arrived they were parted. tl;dr R2V is a huge fan of crappy japanimation.

I think its not so much dying out but more of a lack of quality ones being made. A lot of people havent moved away from competitive AoE2 scene. SC2 is not as good as SC1. AoE is gone. C&C hasnt had a new game in ages, and the most recent chance for a new one was canceled. RTS is just having a lull period while game developers figure out how to make great games again.
