Not so much. Given how easy it's been for a teacher to earn tenure in most places, firing one is damn near impossible. As in they can outright commit a felony and it still takes months of hearings to sack them, and they'll be paid during the process. A lot of boards don't even bother firing teachers, it's easier and often cheaper for them to just keep paying their salary till they retire.

And with a college degree you still end up with an unreliable and crappy job, except now you end up with 20k-60k in debt that won't go away until you pay it off or die. While some of that is caused by the economy, more is caused by people getting degrees that qualify them for nothing but more education, degrees that qualify them to work in fields that have way more workers then jobs, or in the case of the tech industry, dumbasses who think they should be making a 6 figure salary right out of college, because that's what they see Google/Microsoft/etc paying.

A good chunk of it, though the current system basically leads people to those choices by the nose. The whole "YOU NEED A DEGREE TO BE SUCCESSFUL AND IT WILL EARN YOU A MILLION DOLLARS A YEAR IF YOU GET ONE." **** schools push, combined with the cost of tuition and how easy it is to get student loans doesn't really help anyone.
