May 18, 20188 yr comment_944992 This is just so sad... Some people are just sick and twisted. Thank God Texas has the death penalty. This kid who did the shootings looks like a total nut case.... I feel so bad for the families and friends of the victims. http://www.foxnews.com/us/2018/05/18/texas-high-school-gunman-in-custody-identified-ap.html Report
May 18, 20188 yr comment_945000 If my kids were still young enough to still be in school, they would be pulled out a couple years ago, and I would be teaching them myself. The entire way our children are educated, must be changed. The days of the large open campus, and freedom to walk in and out as we please, are over. Localize the schools to neighborhood level. Smaller schools. Less staff. Harden the facilities. Create education buildings. Eliminate all social aspects in school. It's education... not fun, games, and lunch. Minimize government influence and responsibility. It's not a day care center for babysitting. Open more options... night school, online classes... we must change. Report
May 18, 20188 yr Author comment_945001 unfortunately. the shooter was just 17 years old too. 10 people were murdered. it sounds like the kid was really weird-always wore trench coats to school, no matter the weather. I wouldnt be shocked if he was bullied and picked on all the time, and then just snapped Report

I am not a parent myself, so I cant speak from expierience, but all of these shooters have warning signs all over them. how could this child's parents not realize that their kid was broken mentally? i mean look at what this kid posted on his social media. Nazi emblems and a custom T shirt that said born to kill (or something like that). he wore the same trench coat to school every day, even if it was 100 degrees outside. I am sorry but none of that is normal behavior. these parents need to start taking responsibility. my mom is a teacher, and she says all of the time how the lack of interest and overall lack of parenting and involvement in her students lives is horrendous. over the past 30 years she has been a teacher, she says how it has just been progressively getting worse and worse over time. I would be shocked if that was an issue just at her school. I am sure its widespread and a HUGE factor for the violence and murders in our schools Report
May 18, 20188 yr comment_945003 Well it's obvious... all we have to do is ban "AR-15's", "assault weapons", and "automatic weapons" and this would have never happened... and if you can't understand the sarcasm there, I can explain it for you. This kid should have had to open his bloody coat every time he enters that school. One entrance. One exit. It's a government facility... it should be treated like one. There are hundreds of sick kids out there right now, planning the next one. This has all started with the social media explosion, and it's the center of all of it. Too many, all trying to outdo the last coolest fad. It's not about doing anything good anymore, or being the best at anything... it's all about who can create the largest effect. It's mindless to think it can be controlled. It must be made extinct. Report

He used a shotgun and a revolver. An "assault weapons" ban of any design, a ban of magazine or clip capacity, banning a collapsible bumping stock with hair-triggers, none of it would have prevented this shooting. It's not the tools, it's the people. Eliminate schools as the target... it's too much responsibility for the government. Really the Federal Government should not even be involved in education. You've not hurt my feelings, you've managed to provoke the kind of sputtering, incoherent disbelief in someones utter ignorance that tends to be reserved for flat earthers and whenever alex jones opens his mouth. You clearly no nothing what so ever about how education works, how the American school system works, what the purpose of it is, why it works, why public education is a thing. You're proposing to take the literal cornerstone of western civilization, one of the main instutions that made america what it is, hog tie it, and then shoot it in the back of the head. Also you do realize that what your proposing is inevitably a highly restrictive police state yes? Harden schools..and now buses being loaded after school might be a target. Put a 50 foot defensive perimeter around the school...and now buses follow set routes home so you need armed escorts and caravans. Schools hardened? maybe. maybe not, but there's a bunch of people in the park two feet from me, so now you need to harden parks. And malls. And church's. And pools. And libraries, and community centers. And restaurants. And clubs. You literally cannot harden against this kind of attack unless you want the sort of system of checkpoints and random searches that would make isreal go holy shit and china's government cream their collective pants. If ignorance was a volcano, your post would be the formation of the Siberian traps. It's absolute and utter nonsense. Report
May 19, 20188 yr comment_945017 Oh no... not busses. Instead of one big school, bussing in 1,400 kids every day into one location, which currently is one big juicy target... we have multiple smaller schools, closer to where you live that's much easier to secure, and doesn't take so much staff to operate. I think we should get rid of age based grades... a series of tests can advance a kid into the next grade. If they are smart enough, they can actually graduate high school at 12 years old if they are capable. I hated how long it took to get through school. Education should get easier as our society advances. We're holding them back, or trying to force them to keep up. Plus if they don't want to learn, kick them out. We need the days back when parents were responsible for their kids. Report

Parkland had an AR, Sante Fe had a shotgun, revolver, and bombs. 34 victims are more than 20, and only one of them had an AR. There is a clear difference in destructive power between an automatic with a medium/large size mag. In my humble opinion this is the dad's fault for not noticing the warning signs in his son. It is a damn shame it happened but our pitiful excuse for gun laws are not to blame here, sometimes bad shit happens and its because good people do nothing. I would also like to note that apparently on social media there were warning signs as well, so its also partially on his facebook friends. Bad people exist in this world and its important that we don't look at something and say "wow I am glad this isn't my problem." If someone is getting bullied regularly and unfairly it is in my opinion un-American to not stand up for them regardless of your ties or lack there of. I am not saying that it would have prevented this abhorrent event but at the utmost least it can help someone get through a hard time. Report

There are already heavy regulations on full automatics. The destructive power of a shotgun is far stronger than an AR-15. If I was wounded... I would be thankful it was an AR-15 rather than a shotgun. Better chance it will just hit some flesh and heal quickly... a shotgun has a better chance of blowing your arm off. The schools are soft targets, and it's now fashionable for these cowards to end their useless lives this way. There is absolutely no excuse for it. As you say shotguns are much more effective against single target but with that said with a shotgun you have chances between reloads and in this case between pumps to get distance making all but slug less effective. May 19, 20188 yr comment_945034 If you have ever viewed ballistic gell testing or real world wounds from a 3 inch 12 Gauge 00 Buckshot shell, vs a FMJ 5.56 mm (or even a hollow point round) the difference between the wound cavities is astronomical. An AR 5.56 shot center mass can easily kill but shot placement is critical. 5.56 rounds offer high penetration but mediocre stopping power. A bullet that small doesn't transfer many foot pounds of energy when it strikes a target. 12 Gauge 00 Buckshot on the other hand, offers decent penetration, high stopping power, and it fires multiple 'balls' in a small spread pattern. So if you had the option of being shot at with an AR or a 12 Gauge at point blank range, I would choose to be recieving 5.56 rounds. My odds of survival are immensely higher if the shooter is untrained in defensive shooting techniques. Proper, consistent firearms training is what makes an AR a deadly weapon. The other aspect of this that must be taken into account is 2 SROs confronted the shooter during the attack. From what has been publicly released, is that the SROs engaged the shooter in a brief gun fight, wounding the shooter and 1 SRO. The shooter was then taken into custody. If the SROs were not there to confront the shooter, I sincerely believe the casualties would have been significantly higher. I don't know how much ammunition the shooter was carrying, but he appeared motivated and prepared enough to continue shooting up the school until someone stopped him. Report
May 19, 20188 yr comment_945088 I heard this morning that the death penalty is off the table. May 19, 20188 yr comment_945099 They might wait until he comes of age to give him the death penalty. He is 17 right? Depending on when he turns 18 it might become an option during trials. I feel sorry for the public defender who has to deal with this piece of shit though. Report

I do believe someone will challenge the ruling because of this case, but as of right now, it's never gonna happen. It's never going to happen period. Leaving aside all the usual issues with the death penalty, there's literally no possible way for the ruling to be challenged absent changing the constitution to abolish the 8th amendment. Any time the state sought to assemble a death-qualified jury, it would be denied. If it was somehow allowed, it would immediately be thrown out as a mistrial. No appeals court would allow it. I strongly doubt the supreme court would even elect to hear the case, let alone hand down anything like writ of certiorari needed to hurry it through. The supreme court has slapped down every single thing that has gotten even close to touching the Roper v. Simmons decision. As well, most of the disent was on orginalist grounds, and an appeal on those grounds would be entirely insufficient for the supreme court to reverse such strong precedent. As well, the primary argument in the Roper decision remains, and is stronger if the same logical process is applied today; since 2009 three countries have carried out the execution of a juvenile offender: Iran, Saudi Arabia, Sudan. I wouldnt be shocked if he was bullied and picked on all the time, and then just snapped Heared he basically ran off a hit-list, mostly taking people he had prior dealings with. Seems, as with many, the warnings originating from the shooter prior to this were ignored and/or insufficiently followed. It is now to the judiciary to find IF (can't rule out everything) any guidelines and laws on his history have been missed (and as such, negligence from X/Y/...) and for society to come once again together and tighten the safety net (pro-active > reactive please) surrounding the cause and actual trigger event(s). And as for Lys's argument as a whole, alot of these shootings are very "targetted" and narrow in start (evolving towards a "deat by X" ending), you could make the class 2 people big and you will still find one killing his classmate. I think they will take his confession and throw him in prison for the rest of his life. Specifically what he'll get is life with the [airquotes]possibility[/airquotes] of parole in 15 years (Graham v. Florida and Miller v. Alabama ruled life without parole for juveniles in violation of the 8th. Turns out the supreme court thought using three strikes or accessory to laws to sentence a 15 year old to life was bullshit, go figure). Of course people serving a life sentence tend to get paroled at about the same rate as someone wins the lottery. So after 15 years, the parole board will take a good honest and through look at his case and then tell him to go sit in his box for another 5 years. Report
May 20, 20188 yr comment_945153 It doesn't matter what I think, but I would believe 10 counts of first degree murder would get him 10 consecutive 15 year sentences. A- none of the shootings used an automatic weapon, and at close range like in a classroom setting B- 34 victims are more than 20, but look at response times. At parkland, the officers ran away from the shooter. at Santa Fe, the school officers engaged. In a classroom, at short range, a shotgun could have easily caused just as much and if not more carnage than an AR-15. And to the death penalty thing, it was determined that executing a juvenile is cruel and unusual and a violation of the 8th amendment, because apparently their brains are not developed. Furthermore, he has to have the possibility of parole after 40 years because of the same 8th amendment. So this scum bag will probably get out of jail at the age of 57. I am sorry but the senseless murder of 10 people and attempted murder of 10 more should not excuse you from the death penalty, regardless of age. But the law is the law. I hope he finds some justice at the end of a shank in prison Report
