Shit doesn't look good, guys...

The article failed to mention the actual tempatures outside of the K range which I feel is a real reason for concern.

The Arctic in Winter typically stays near the -40F (-40C) range to the -60F range. The current tempatures are roughly around the 0F to -10F range. Sorry Celsuis guys, I don't know C. It is moving downward from the Summer Temps (warmer than most think. About 15F to 32F) at the moment. I feel it is moving slower than usual as by now it should be closer to the -30 to -45 range. The good news is it is moving down. I dont think it is as much as case of the tempature rising global, as it is the tempature dropping slower. We won't know until it hits the coldest timeframe (Mid-December to Early Feb).

It is worth mentioning to (as weird as it is) historically when the Arctic is slow to cool down like this (but it does cool down to the normal -40 to -70ish range eventually) it usually means a harsh winter for the Northern Hemisphere.

[TROLL] I feel the issue is that it is far too cold for us to live there. We can probably increase our pollution output, and build massive heaters up there to warm it up faster so we can start settling up there. Plus Santa gave me coal one year, so fuck him. [/TROLL]

Way too cold. The temp just dropped to under 50F in Las Vegas and it's too cold for me. My daughter in Denver tells me it's in the 20's there. Yikes... we're gonna have a cold winter this year. I want to know how much these guys are getting paid to watch water freeze and ice melt. Obama should have given those jobs to all the coal miners he forced his unemployment on. Trump's coming and the long nightmare will end.

I don't understand all this concern about polar bears. Polar bears hibernate... wake up... eat seals... make more polar bears... and then hibernate again. If all the polar bears died, the only thing that would happen is seals would smile more.

Polar bears is one thing, all the ice melting and flooding the coastal areas is another. The northern icecaps float in water, so the change may not be that much, but the real concern is what happens if all the ice on dryland melts, as it's been slowly doing.

But fine, you are concerned with the economy and jobs. Bad news is, climate change will eventually hit that too and hit it hard.

We actual discussed this in my thermodynamics class. The main issue society focuses on is rising sea levels. While dangerous, it isnt our biggest problem. As far as humanity is concerned. We can survive floods as a species though many would die on coastal areas. (HOWEVER, this accounts for Antarctica. Which at the current rate, we still have decades upon decades (well over a century) before Antarctica is even endangered. So we have time to act.) The north pole, while big on a map, is very thin in ice and wont raise the sea levels drastically.

The big issue with the north pole melting is the reflective ability that ice and snow hold on solar radiation. Ice and snow are huge factors in reflecting unwanted/unneeded heat. So we are stuck with this situation, that the North Pole isnt too dangerous as far as sea levels to melt. However, without the surface ice and snow, tempatures will gradually raise globally until we find a higher median. If this median is high enough to endanger Antarctica, it might turn out well over a century to act into half a century. News organizations like half truths from the science community to raise fear over things. Granted, this fear may help to get proper regulations in place to save the South Pole when that time comes, the North Pole is not a huge factor (except an increase in global tempatures. Probably along the 10-25F range globally) which would still put Antarctica well below the freezing tempature.

Most these science researchs on global warming come from the North Pole, not the South. The South is still incredibly cold. Well below -30 in mid summer.

There is another thing you haven't mentioned. If median temperatures rise, this also means that ocean temperatures will rise. Even if we completely ignore what this means for the ecosystem, there is still the fact that warm water has a bigger volume than cold water, and therefore heat alone may cause the water levels to rise drastically.

True. Most my knowledge here only comes from my professors so I'm not too informed on every aspect of this. But heat does expand and increase friction (more tsunamis and hurricanes). I'm not disagreeing that global warming is a huge concern. I'm just under the impression we have time to act and reserve a majority of these effects. We can go through a couple presidencies with this issue ignored and still be okay, though faster to address it is definitely better and we would need a global agreement. Places like China, Mexico, etc where their regulations are ages behind ours are more of a concern to me than a country that despite having tens of millions of drivers, our emissions are well beyond those of other countries.

We won't be able to reverse the effects, we buggered the equilibrium far enough to 1 side that it won't just magicaly re-adjusts itself to what it was pre 19th century.

No the human species won't die out cause of global warming, but damn we are trying to kill of all the other life that excists and has less "means" to just go up and move to a nicer place.

As for emissions, US goes right into the top #5 is taken per capita.

Is that also our fault, or is there something much bigger in play?

Also let's take look in the past, but more than just 10 or 100 years. Lets see what happened in the span of last 500 thousand years:

You really think humans are responsible for everything that happens on our planet? Surely we can slightly alter the cycle, but I have no doubts that this cycle will go on (at least until something even bigger happens). Obviously it's not the excuse to keep on poisoning ourselves, but history shows that warming is something that happens without our help and it will happen this time whether we want it or not.

This was a serious question. What do you want to do about it?

I don't see a problem here.  (Trying to decide if I need to use the troll tags like SeaBeeGipson above).

That aside, thanks Ali for explaining that better than I could.

Are you an engineering major?

Grats, you just equated a "thousands of years" change to a "tens of years" change. Heck the current sharp increase could actually trigger an increase from the Earth itself, you know the one seen in your graphs. All the increase in greenhouse gasses (or lets just say 99.9%) are anthropomorphic, that one is quite easely measured cause we know where they come from (carbon-fuels) and we know howmuch we use.

Astrophysics major, but it has a shit ton of classes that fit into engineering.

If I'm right that is the 400,000 Volstock graph that went over Ice Core data. It doesnt account for any new readings since 1950. Same with the Dome C 800,000 graph.

But fine, you are concerned with the economy and jobs. Bad news is, climate change will eventually hit that too and hit it hard.

I'll take a crack at this... Mr. and Mrs. Flyover Country... they worry about their jobs, their family, their mortgage, their grocery bill, NASCAR, the Broncos, and Toby Keith. They don't give a shit about the polar ice caps.

Have you ever thought about all these wealthy limousine liberals that are chewing on everyone's ears about climate change? The effects of climate change are supposed to destroy the coastal areas with rising ocean levels. 20 years ago they were saying that it was supposed to have happened already... If we didn't act now! But they still invest vast amounts of their fortune on oceanfront mansions... why would you pay tens of millions of dollars on property that you believe will be underwater at any time?

Ever been to Hawaii? I have. You can't swing a dead cat without hitting a Democrat in Hawaii. You know what else they have there? Asian tourists... millions. It's like nothing you have ever seen. Something else they have in Hawaii... lots of mega-million dollar hotels... right on the beach. Hawaii is actually the highest mountain on earth. You may think it's Everest, but Hawaii makes Everest look like Peter Dinklage. The difference is Hawaii is a mountain under water.

Now if the polar caps are melting and making the oceans rise... why are the waves of Hawaii still pounding at the same place they have been for as long as they have pictures showing the same waves pounding on the same shore? Climate change pushers also claim that climate change has destroyed the coral reef of Hawaii. But there is one thing that Hawaii does not have... and that is sand. There is no natural sand on Hawaii... it's a volcano. So how is there so much sand on the beaches of Hawaii? It's imported from Australia. Millions of tons of sand has been, and still is, brought over from Australia for the comfort of tourists. Waves have pulled that sand out over the years... and the sand killed the coral reef. Don't worry... they created an artificial reef, so now all the fish have a wonderful place to breed. I saw it all when I was on a submarine... it's quite beautiful. This is getting too long.

That is actually really interesting and I did not know that.

I'm doing my reasonable part (e.g. recycle what I can, trying not to waste electricity/water, etc) but it doesn't really matter in the end. I could live in the woods like a nomad and eat roots only and it wouldn't make the slightest difference in the end. In the end it's up to the bigger players like the govt to do things like replace coal plants with less polluting ones (nuclear power is not all bad) or subsidize eco-friendly businesses and investments.

Dude, I've been thinking about this the last few months. Where I'm from, it should have been snowing at least a month ago. Or at least it should be far, far, FAR colder. I was just camping a few days ago near Palisades dam. That's absolutely unheard of this time of year. That place should be covered in snow but it's dry as a bone. The reservoir is already much lower than normal and they had to release a lot more water because the water in the river was getting too hot for the fish to survive.

I have a feeling that my area will be having a drought next year. There's simply not enough snow, not enough water. It still hasn't snowed one flake in the valleys or plains. I mean shit, it basically feels like summer here. You don't even need a coat to go outside and that's fucking alarming in November around here.

Scientists have been screaming at us for years and nobody has listened at all. They still aren't and will continue to ignore the impending apocalypse. This is why I say, at least I will get to know how the world ends. Something I've always been curious about.

Read my comment. Complete opposite of yours. Also, there's a reason we call it climate change now instead of global warming. I lived in Vegas for a while and it was incredibly hot. Couldn't stand the summers, at least not outside during the day. Though it does look like you guys are chilling around the 60's in the day time right now.

At this point we've likely already crossed the threshold of doing something about it. At this point, we'd probably need a very serious global wide initiative for "climate reversal" to make any kind of difference. Even if humans disappeared tomorrow I fear the runaway greenhouse effect is already here. Scientists have already screamed at us from the top of their lungs for years. It got about 2.5 minutes of news time and then everyone went back to their daily lives of not giving any fucks.

4 months out of the year it's over 100F. It's why I live here... I hate cold weather. We had quite a bit of rain this summer. I know why though... every time Hillary, Barack, Michelle, or Biden showed up it got all cloudy, windy, and rained. Glad that's over... but I wonder if Harry Reid will stay in DC after he retires... if he comes to Searchlight to retire we might have shitty weather until the old bastard dies. Damn climate change.
